Gay footballer says some top players 'faking girlfriends' to hide sexuality

Ex-German footballer Marcus Urban has opened up about the reality of gay players in the sport, revealing that some have resorted to having pretend girlfriends or entering fake marriages to conceal their true sexuality. The former midfielder discusses this issue in his upcoming book.
Urban, who played for Rot-Weiss Erfurt in the 1980s and early '90s and represented East Germany's youth team, hung up his boots in 1991. He came out to his loved ones years later and went public with his sexuality in 2007.
Now 54, he's an advocate for diversity in sports.
His insights are part of the soon-to-be-released book "Mensch Fussballstar."
Ahead of the book's release, German tabloid Bild has shared snippets where Urban reflects: "Yes, I was the first gay footballer in Germany to come out at the time. When Thomas Hitzlsperger came out, it was thought that it could be a turning point.", reports the Express.
"But it wasn't really right. Thomas also seems surprised to me that no one actually comes out any further, not even those after their career. There is no reason to hide anymore." New book, Mensch Fussballstar, features ex-football players discussing different subjects (Image: GETTY)
Urban continues by saying: "Many gay footballers have organized themselves in the background in the meantime. In groups of between 20 and 40 people.
"But it is only the tip of the iceberg. Many are lone wolves, do their own thing and we don't even know about many of them yet.
"Because yes, even today fear still too often beats courage. The fear results from losing the job, losing the reputation.
"The people around the players who tell them they shouldn't come out, they shouldn't live freely so that they can continue to make money."
He then stated: "In the past, it was always said that the media and fans were to blame for the fact that no one came out. I think today it's just the fears of the players and the people around them, at least here, where we are, in the middle of Europe.
"I think almost all the media would support it. I also honestly believe that the fans would no longer be the problem. Neither do the clubs. Today, it's more about the internal climate.
"And then there are again branches of business within the organised gay footballers. Fake girlfriends are organised, sham marriages are arranged.
"At the same time, there are agencies that set up sex meetings. They also earn good money with it again. But the players' advisors also organise this partly for their clients and then have the players in their hands."

BOD asked to sign NDA over rebel R360 proposals that want to revolutionise rugby

Brian O'Driscoll has revealed he was asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement to learn more about Mike Tindall's revolutionary R360 England ace Tindall is fronting a rebel breakaway circuit that is targeting some of the world's top stars with pledges to big money deals and a fixture programme in glamorous locations. It plans to launch next year and O'Driscoll said: "Mike Tindall asked me to sign an NDA about a year ago to find out more about it before it came out, and I just actually never did. "And so I don't know the pitch from their side and so I'm just kind of reading what everyone else has read rather than knowing from within. "But it's not gone away, which many of these things have. We'll have to wait and see. I've seen Tindall a bit and he feels as though there's massive scope in it." Brian O'Driscoll and Lynne Cantwell have teamed up to celebrate Defender as Principal Partner for the Women's Rugby World Cup 2025 O'Driscoll is sceptical about whether there is a market for R360 and yet points out that the project hasn't faded away. "You hear the different noise and it's just this hasn't gone away, and there's apparently deep pockets," said the former Ireland great."It's just trying to take a leap around how does this work - how do you create an environment that's not just about paying the top people the top money? How do you get support? How do you get interest levels?"There will be huge scepticism until it's tried, but there's all sorts of NDAs apparently at play, and ex-England players have verbally agreed and so on. But it's all 'he said, she said' at the moment. It's just maybe it's to do with my capacity to see that change, but it just feels like there's lots of elements that are pulling against it. "I don't know whether clubs will want their international players doing that - it takes away from the club scene here, but it also relieves some of the pressure for the national set-up. It's really hard to know." Brian O'Driscoll and Lynne Cantwell have teamed up to celebrate Defender as Principal Partner for the Women's Rugby World Cup 2025

Slaughtneil boss Mark Doran installed as new Antrim manager

Antrim have appointed Slaughtneil manager Mark Doran as their new inter-county football manager, replacing the departed Andy McEntee. The county confirmed the news in a statement this evening, Antrim GAA chairperson Seamus McMullan saying that Doran's "depth of experience and understanding of the modern game make him an ideal fit to lead our senior footballers forward". The former Down footballer remains the Slaughtneil manager for the 2025 club season. He had initially resigned after last year's Derry SFC loss to then All-Ireland champions Glen but was reappointed to the role in March. Doran had been strongly linked with the Derry job last year, following Mickey Harte's resignation but ultimately wound up taking a coaching role alongside Davy Burke in Roscommon. He previously held coaching roles with Down between 2019 and 2021, and had spells on the coaching ticket with Clare and Wicklow. In addition to that, he was co-manager of the Ballybay side that claimed the 2022 Monaghan SFC title. McEntee vacated the Antrim post after three seasons in charge, following their Tailteann Cup quarter-final loss to Wexford. The ex-Meath manager had succeeded in keeping Antrim in the third tier of the league in his opening two seasons, as well as reaching successive Tailteann Cup semi-finals, but the county will begin 2026 in Division 4 following relegation at the start of this year.
