Giants hitting coach on offense's abysmal turn: ‘Fans should be pissed'

Pat Burrell knows San Francisco Giants fans are unhappy with the state of the offense, and as the team's hitting coach, he's bearing the brunt of public disgruntlement. 'How could you be in this role if you don't expect it?' Burrell told the Chronicle before Friday's game against Tampa Bay. 'When you sign up, that's what comes with it. And the fans should be pissed. Of course they should be. 'Believe me, I wish the results had been better, but they're not, so I understand all the criticism, rightfully so. Hey, look, things aren't going the way we wanted. The things that are really important to us as hitting guys, philosophy and how we win games here, we're not doing those things.' The Giants' .232 batting average entering Friday was second worst in the National League, and over the past two months, they were batting .214 with men in scoring position entering the weekend, worst in the majors by 10 points. They scored a major league low 186 runs in that time frame, 14 fewer than anyone else. More For You Something is clearly wrong with the Giants. Is it Bob Melvin? Inside Justin Verlander's quest to perfect his pitches, still trying to 'find it' for Giants Before that point, the Giants weren't hitting a ton, batting .233, but they were winning, tied for first in the NL West on June 13. They were batting .250 with men in scoring position, and their 305 runs in the first 71 games put them in the top half of baseball; hitting in such situations was a major focus for Burrell and assistant hitting coaches Damon Minor and Oscar Bernard all spring. 'It becomes a question of 'What do we do to fix it?'' Burrell said. 'Trust me, we go through it all the time, and it's been one of those years it's been really troubling to figure out, considering how we started off. The recipe was working.' On June 15, the Giants made the big acquisition of the summer, adding slugger Rafael Devers. From that point on, the team's numbers with men in scoring position dipped and San Francisco's record was 18-31 entering Friday. 'We stopped producing the way we'd been producing,' Burrell said. 'Getting Rafi was a shot in the arm, we all felt that way, but maybe it put more pressure on everyone — like, 'Now we're expected to do more.' But aren't you always expected to (produce)? It's tough to figure out what happened. 'When we got Rafi, that showed (president of baseball operations) Buster (Posey) and the ownership group, they believe in this group. They provided us an opportunity to get better. We haven't performed. That's frustrating.' The one thing Burrell and the rest of the staff know is that there is no lack of effort or preparation. That has remained the same. 'I'm still seeing those things,' Burrell said, adding, as manager Bob Melvin has several times, that if anything it's a matter of trying to do too much. Burrell shuts down a question about the park factor quickly; the Giants have especially struggled at home, dropping 13 of 14 at Oracle Park going into Friday, batting .146 with men in scoring position in the process. Everyone understands it's a pitchers' park — both teams have to contend with that, and Burrell said that when he was playing for the Giants in 2010-11, 'F—, nobody talked about that, because you understand, we're coming off the Barry Bonds era and he made this park look small. There was no room to talk about any of that stuff, because it was falling on deaf ears.' Burrell also played in Philadelphia, a town with notoriously demanding fans, and he understands what the Giants players are going through as they struggle. Two months of offensive futility is grim for all involved, and add in the fact San Francisco is batting a league-low .250 on fastballs this season — that's demoralizing. The average against fastballs and the numbers with men in scoring position 'are the two areas that, unfortunately, we've struggled in,' Burrell said. 'That just makes it that much harder, and these guys are feeling it. So for us coaches, it's more about, 'What can we do to keep the morale up?' When the bulk of your guys are having a tough time, that's difficult, no question about it, but they need to know they're not alone. This has been going on since this game first began, and believe me, everyone is trying to do their part.' Even ultra-positive Willy Adames was down in the dumps after the Padres thumped the Giants 11-1 to sweep the series at Oracle Park on Wednesday, but Burrell remains upbeat. 'We're going to keep providing information,' he said. 'We're going to keep working. We're going to push and push and push until we get some momentum that lets those guys go and get on a run. That's the mindset. 'We're not going to change. We're going to keep pushing the envelope.'

Six West Valley League football teams agree: Their league is best in City Section

It was football media day for six West Valley League teams on Saturday at Granada Hills, and as a unit, the coaches and players are convinced they have a chance to be the best league in the City Section in terms of competition. While defending league champion Birmingham has an overall 49-game winning streak against City Section opponents, Cleveland, Granada Hills, Chatsworth, Taft and El Camino Real hope to be factors in the playoffs. Cleveland is making strides to challenge for second place with a group of talented juniors, including two Nigerian-born players, running back Moyosoreoluwa Odebunmi and linebacker Oluwafemi Okeola. Odebunmi, in his first varsity carry in a scrimmage against Van Nuys on Thursday, ran for a touchdown. "When I scored, I was like, 'Oh wow,'" he said. "But I know it's not going to be easy." Birmingham has an offensive line filled with 300 pounders, and when 6-foot-5, 260-pound quarterback Kevin Hawkins plays tight end, the Patriots are truly giants up front. Coach Jim Rose said of Hawkins running the ball: "It's like tackling a lineman. He's a huge guy out there." Birmingham held a pizza eating contest this past week, and the winner was lineman Pablo Granados, who ate 10 slices in seven minutes. Hawkins was runner-up with seven. Chatsworth offensive lineman Pablo Escobedo is known for riding his horse in his Chatsworth neighborhood. "It's pretty cool," he said. Chatsworth should have one of the league's best running backs in junior Devin Del Toro, who has been playing running back and linebacker since his freshman season. Coach Shawn Johnson said he has made "a huge jump." There are two players in the league who are outstanding two-sport athletes in football and baseball. That's Taft quarterback/catcher Nathan Swinson and El Camino Real defensive back/center fielder Shane Bogacz. Both try to find time to hit the batting cages to stay sharp during football season. Granada Hills will continue to run the double-wing attack, focusing on running the ball, but the midseason availability of transfer quarterback Taiyo Dorio from Crescenta Valley could cause coach Bucky Brooks to try a pass or two. Wingback Myles Cross drew laughter when he said, "I caught a pass." Brooks offered praise to all coaches and players in the City Section. "I applaud all those who opted to stay in the neighborhood and play for neighborhood schools," he said. "I want to salute everyone. I love the competitiveness." Sign up for the L.A. Tigers Blockbuster? Detroit Linked To $120 Million Superstar Free Agent

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Boston Red Sox star Alex Bregman was one of the bigger stories to follow during last year's free agency period. He landed a massive $120 million deal with the Red Sox that includes an opt-out clause after this season. Considering how well Bregman is playing, it seems like he's going to opt out of this deal and pursue a five, six, or seven-year contract worth north of $200 million. The sweepstakes will likely be hotter this year than last. Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently suggested the Detroit Tigers would pursue Bregman in free agency again if the star lands there after the season. HOUSTON, TEXAS - AUGUST 12: Alex Bregman #2 of the Boston Red Sox runs the bases after a two run home run during the sixth inning against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park on August... HOUSTON, TEXAS - AUGUST 12: Alex Bregman #2 of the Boston Red Sox runs the bases after a two run home run during the sixth inning against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park on August 12, 2025 in Houston, Texas. More"Bregman, who is making $40 million this year and signed for two more years at that rate, will likely opt out of his contract and seek a longer-term deal," Bowden wrote. "He missed time this season with a quad injury but has hit .299/.379/.542 in 327 plate appearances. It appears Boston would be his first choice in free agency, but he is an obvious fit with several other contending teams, including the Phillies, Yankees, Tigers, Dodgers, Mariners, and even the Mets." The Tigers will likely pursue Bregman again, but the money will always become an issue in this circumstance, especially if Detroit is going to try to re-sign Tarik Skubal when he lands in free agency at the end of next season. The Tigers could surprise everybody and land the star infielder, but it would mean outbidding the Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, New York Yankees, and others. It's unlikely.
