Australian woman who introduced the hula hoop to the world – but missed out on the profits

What began with a large bamboo ring wrapped in brown paper and posted across the Pacific to an Australian war bride in the US launched what became one of the world's greatest fads of the late 1950s – the hula hoop.
But Joan Anderson, the parcel's recipient and the woman who delivered the concept of the hoop to America, was left out of the loop – ignored by the toy company that sold more than 100m hula hoops before the fad was replaced.
It was not until 2018 that Anderson, who died on 14 July aged 101, was credited for her role in introducing the hula hoop after her story was shared in the short documentary film Hula Girl.
The film provided Anderson the opportunity to tell her side of a story that involved the thrill of innovation quickly followed by the ache of betrayal and the worth of a 'gentleman's handshake'.
In 1956, while on a return visit to her home town of Sydney, Anderson noticed how many people were having fun with large bamboo hoops, wriggling them around their waists and shimmying their hips like Elvis Presley.
'Everywhere I would go, everybody was giggling and carrying on and when I asked what was going on they said, 'Oh, everyone's doing the hoop',' she said.
The joy was contagious and upon her return to the US where she was living, she told her husband, Wayne, about it. He wanted to see one of these hoops, so Anderson's mother posted one over and during a dinner party demonstration of the hoop, after a guest compared Anderson's moves to those of a hula dancer, the name hula hoop was born.
'There are so many stories about where the name came from, and they are all fictitious' Anderson said in the film. 'This is the true story about it.'
Realising its potential as a toy product, the Andersons contacted an associate of Wayne's named Arthur 'Spud' Melin, the founder of the Wham-O toy company, whose instincts they trusted. They met in the company's parking lot.
'There were no witnesses; just Spud, my husband and myself,' Anderson recalled. 'We told him we've called it the hula hoop, and he thought that was a great name for it.'
Melin was intrigued and, as he and Wayne shook hands, he assured the Andersons that if the hula hoop made money for him, it would make money for them too.
By 1958, as the popularity of the hoops – now patented, plastic and produced by Wham-O – escalated and, with sales exceeding US$30m in two months, the Andersons' phone calls remained unanswered, messages not returned.
The only credit given to Joan Anderson was as the 'friend from Australia' who had inspired Melin.
'I think that bugged me more than anything,' Anderson said. 'I was not a 'friend'.'
Joan Constance Manning was born in Sydney on 28 December 1923 to Claude and Ethel Manning. After leaving school at 14, she began modelling, with ambitions to become a film star. She was a diminutive figure, just over five feet tall, and was nicknamed the Pocket Venus.
In December 1941, Joan was the cover girl of Pix magazine and was declared to be 'a typical Australian holiday girl' whose war work included knitting socks and writing letters. She received a picture of herself from troops at Tobruk who wrote, 'you make us forget Libya'.
While swimming at Bondi beach in 1945, Joan was approached by US Army Air corps P-38 pilot Wayne Anderson, who did not make an impression until she saw him that night at a dance in his uniform. Four months later, they were married and, in early 1946, she joined hundreds of other war brides on their journey to America.
In 1961, the Andersons filed a lawsuit against the Wham-O toy company and eventually settled with a small amount of compensation.
'Why be angry with something you can't change? The world isn't fair but life goes on. I had a great life,' Joan Anderson said. 'My husband lived to be 87 and we had 63 wonderful years together. Happiness is the best revenge.'
She and Wayne had four children: Warren, Gary, Carl and Loralyn, three of whom survive her. Wayne died in 2007. Despite the hula hoop disappointment, the Anderson children all had hoops as they grew up.
'It was never a big deal in our family. [My parents] went on with their lives. They knew they messed up with the business deal,' Loralyn Willis said.
Somalian Australian circus artist Marawa, an inductee of the Guinness World Record Hall of Fame for her hooping prowess, met Anderson in 2018 and was struck by her grace over her lost business opportunity.
'If I can be like Joan when I am 100 then I'll be happy,' she said. 'Meeting her made me realise I've made the right career choice for a long life.'
Willis said her mother was 'fun-loving, adventurous and willing to try anything'. She was ziplining, parasailing and boogie boarding with her grandchildren until her mid-90s.
'Mom was pretty happy that she got the recognition in the end and that she was able to bring so much joy to people around the world,' she said. 'How can you hula hoop without being happy?'

'We've had to take out a second loan… the first loan was $800K, the second loan was $400K, and we're not even gonna be completely finished,' she said. 'We need to clean! Skye has long been open about the difficulties of her home renovation project, and in July last year, she shocked her fans by getting into a screaming match with her partner Lachlan during a work day. The podcaster shared a shocking video on Instagram showing Lachlan giving Skye a tour of the renovation work at their new home. The footage began with Lachlan showcasing the work, pointing out which rooms would feature skylights to let in the beaming sun. 'I've just ordered the windows and designed the room myself!' a proud Lachlan told Skye, who initially agreed his plans were 'stunning'. However, Skye soon became upset with some of Lachlan's plans and questioned why he'd included skylights in some rooms but not others. 'A skylight is pointless in this room because of the beautiful window. We could have used that skylight in the [walk-in wardrobe],' a frustrated Skye began. 'Oh my God, why wouldn't you think of that? There's skylights where they don't need to be and none where they do need to be!' However, Lachlan was having none of it and became frustrated as he told his partner he chose the ideal locations for the skylights - and insisted none was needed in the wardrobe. Sixteen years after a bull shark tore off his arm and leg in Sydney Harbour, former Navy diver Paul de Gelder is back in shark-infested waters, this time by choice. In a new Discovery series, How To Survive a Shark Attack, de Gelder puts himself in high-risk situations to test survival tactics and educate viewers on how to stay alive during an encounter with one of the ocean's deadliest predators. Viewers will experience real shark attacks up close through a series of never-before-attempted experiments that teach life-saving tactics for surviving an encounter. One experiment shows de Gelder on an upturned kayak with hungry sharks circling underneath. In another exeriment De Gelder straps on fake limbs oozing with blood, then feeds them to real sharks mouths. 'Paul, I just want to go on the record and say that I'm not comfortable with this,' a producer warned off-camera. He insists filming the program wasn't retraumatising and sees himself as a survivor rather than a victim. 'I've lived a pretty tumultuous life, and I don't really look at the bad things that have happened to me as anchor points that I need to latch onto and spiral into depression or have PTSD or anything like that,' he said. Sixteen years ago, on February 11, 2009, de Gelder was taking part in a counter-terrorism military exercise in Sydney Harbour near Woolloomooloo when a nine-foot-long bull shark attacked him without warning. The assault lasted just eight seconds, but it cost him an arm and a leg. 'No one saw the shark coming. It was eating me before everyone knew what was even happening,' he told 'I grabbed it by the nose and I tried to lever it off me, but that did absolutely nothing. 'I tried to punch it off ... but it took me under and started tearing me apart. He pounded the 300kg beast with everything he had as it pulled him under once more, convinced this time it was the end. 'I was drowning in agony, being eaten alive and I realised there was nothing I could do, so I gave up.' Then, in a move he still can't explain, the shark suddenly let go, leaving de Gelder floating in the harbour. Despite the catastrophic injuries, he managed to swim back to the safety boat through a pool of his own blood. Onboard, his colleagues desperately tried to stop the bleeding using T-shirts. 'Then it was thanks to my chief on the wharf, knowing that it wasn't stopping the blood, so he got one of the guys to pinch an artery closed with their fingers,' de Gelder said. 'The surgeon said if he hadn't done that, I would have died within another 30 seconds.' He recalls the surreal moment it all began: 'I was on the surface, on my back, kicking my legs when all of the sudden, I felt this pressure on my leg. I turned around and I came face to face with a massive shark's head. 'And then my survival instincts kicked in and I thought, 'I've got to get out of this somehow.' 'I thought, I've seen Shark Week - I'll jab it in the eyeball. The shark actually had my right hand and I couldn't move it. In his Shark Week special, de Gelder shares his top tips for surviving a shark attack. Some are straightforward, like avoiding murky water or areas with fishing activity, but others might surprise you. One big myth he busts: don't punch a shark in the nose. 'Now, if you're in the jaws of the shark? At that point, you want to do all you can. In that case, I would go for the eyeballs, go for the gills, just fight for your life,' he says. 'But generally speaking, if you see a shark and it does approach you, you do not want to punch it in the nose.' There are two main reasons. First, a shark's head is made of thick cartilage, so punching it can hurt your hand, and bleeding in the water is a bad idea. Second, sharks are faster and more agile underwater than you. That punch could miss or even land your hand in its mouth, making it an easy meal. Now 47, de Gelder says he doesn't view himself as a victim, but a survivor, and he's dedicated his life to protecting sharks in the wild. 'I'm not retraumatised by any of this,' he insists. High-profile businesswoman Fleur Madden is set to put her Queensland mansion under the hammer. Madden, who was cast in the axed Real Housewives of Brisbane spin-off, has not listed a price guide for the two-storey, six-bedroom property she shares with her husband, mining executive Jimmy Gwisai. According to sales records, the median sale price for large upscale properties in Coorparoo, where the home is situated, is an impressive $2.5million The couple's property, dubbed The Palms, is inspired by the architecture found in Florida around Palm Springs. Highlights include a dazzling façade, stone archways, a pink blush front door and a private dining room that features a built-in 'wine wall' and spectacular chandelier. There's also a curved staircase, terrazzo tiling, oak timber floors, a beautifully appointed 'media room' and a home office that can double as a bedroom. The ground floor offers an open-plan layout combining an oversized kitchen and living space, which opens out to a covered patio and al fresco dining and pool area. Other highlights include soaring three-metre ceilings and a master suite occupying an entire corner of the top floor, which also features a grand ensuite and dressing room. It comes after Madden, who runs the Ginsburg Advisory business brand, was all set to star in reality spin-off, The Real Housewives of Brisbane. Announced in 2023, Foxtel dropped the Brisbane edition in favour of a second Sydney season. Madden was to feature in a cast including couture designer Sonia Stradiotto and jewellery designer Jimena Alejandra. Speaking to Adelaide Now at the time, Alejandra revealed that she was first approached in 2022. Also interviewed for the story was Madden, who said that the network had plans to make the series different and less frivolous than its predecessors. 'They were specifically looking for businesswomen and women that had their own success, they were trying to make it different,' she told the publication in 2023. It was earlier reported that The Real Housewives reality franchise would be moving to Brisbane and the Gold Coast. According to The Courier Mail, suitable candidates living in Queensland's wealthiest postcodes were being sought out. Producers had approached a number of high-profile women, and some reportedly declined the opportunity, opting to keep their lives private.
