Prisons department calls for support to fund inmate education
MELAKA: The Malaysian Prisons Department is encouraging the private sector, corporate entities, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to come forward and collaborate in implementing funding programmes for inmates who wish to pursue higher education.
Its deputy commissioner-general (Security and Corrections), Datuk Ibrisam Abdul Rahman said although these individuals are serving sentences, many of them have shown interest in pursuing education at the diploma, bachelor's, master's and even doctorate (PhD) level.
'This cooperation through corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes will be very helpful, as the existing funds are limited and insufficient to cover the full cost of education for inmates, especially those without financial support from their families.
'Some inmates who have the means may receive financial support from their families, but for those who cannot afford it, we need to help source suitable funding. Without such aid, their education may be limited to just the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) level,' he told reporters in Telok Mas here today.

Elaborating further, Ibrisam said so far, the Prisons Department has established partnerships with three higher education institutions namely Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Open University Malaysia (OUM) and Asia College of Exercise Medicine.
He also said that this collaboration, which began in 2008, has enabled a wider variety of academic programmes to be offered to inmates.
'At present, there are three inmates pursuing PhD, nine (master's degree), 10 (bachelor's), and 200 enrolled in diploma-level programmes,' he added.

MELAKA: Academic pressure exerted by a mother and her eldest son is believed to have driven a 17-year-old boy to stab both of them to death at their house in Bukit Rambai here. Policemen found the suspect, a Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia candidate, sitting in a dazed state outside the house in Taman Rambai Mutiara at around 5am yesterday. Melaka police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the boy later confessed to stabbing his mother, a 51-year-old schoolteacher, and his 21-year-old brother. He said the suspect also claimed to have attempted to kill his younger brother, aged 13. 'Based on initial investigations, the suspect used a folding knife about 20cm long to stab his mother multiple times in the neck, waist and back. 'The suspect had brought the weapon with him in his schoolbag,' he told a press conference at the Melaka police headquarters in Bukit Beruang here yesterday. DCP Dzulkhairi said the motive appears to be deep-seated resentment and emotional distress. 'The suspect had been under continuous pressure to study for his upcoming SPM exams. 'He claimed his mother and elder brother frequently forced him to focus on his studies, which caused him significant mental strain. 'The suspect had entered his mother's room to attack her using a folding knife, leading to a struggle between them. 'The suspect's elder brother tried to intervene but was also stabbed, while the youngest brother was injured by the knife while trying to help,' he added. The younger brother is being treated at Hospital Melaka for serious injuries. The bodies of the deceased were sent to the same hospital for a post-mortem. DCP Dzulkhairi said several stab wounds were found on the victims, including on the neck, waist and back. 'Police also discovered bloodstained clothes believed to have been worn by the suspect during the incident, which had been discarded in nearby bushes,' he added. He said police obtained CCTV recordings from a neighbour's house which confirmed that no one else had entered the premises during the incident. 'Footage showed that the suspect was attempting to dispose of the murder weapon and several other items, which have since been recovered by police as evidence,' he said, adding that the suspect was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident. DCP Dzulkhairi said the suspect will be remanded today to assist with investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

Cops nab teenage boy suspected of killing mother, brother

Melaka police chief Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the suspect would be brought before a judge for a remand order tomorrow, Astro Awani reported. He said the suspect's 51-year-old mother, who was a teacher at a Chinese school, and 21-year-old brother were found in the living room of their house with multiple stab wounds. Another victim, the suspect's 13-year-old sibling, was found alive but injured and covered in blood in the garage of their home. Early investigations suggest that the suspect was likely emotionally distressed due to pressure to excel academically. 'Perhaps because the mother was a teacher, she wanted her children to achieve excellent results. The suspect was due to sit for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination this year. 'He was likely often scolded and told to study harder. Neighbours reported frequently hearing arguments from the house,' Dzulkhairi told a press conference at the Melaka police headquarters. According to Dzulkhairi, the suspect is believed to have attacked his mother while she was in her bedroom. The older brother is said to have rushed to her aid, leading to a struggle that resulted in both victims being fatally stabbed. 'The suspect then allegedly ordered his younger brother to leave the house, but the boy refused. The suspect then attempted to stab him as well. 'Although seriously wounded, the younger sibling managed to escape and was later rescued,' Dzulkhairi said. He said the suspect had attempted to dispose of evidence by discarding his clothes in nearby bushes. 17-year-old arrested after mother, brother found murdered in Melaka
MELAKA: A 51-year-old teacher and her eldest son were found dead, believed to have been murdered, while her youngest child was seriously injured in an incident in Bukit Rambai, early this morning. It is understood that the bodies of the woman and her 21-year-old son were found lying in a pool of blood in the living room, while the surviving victim, her 13-year-old son, was found in the porch area of the house. State police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said a team was deployed to the scene after the police received information on the murder at 6.15am. "Investigations at the scene found the bodies of the woman and her son, both with multiple stab wounds. "In addition, another male victim, the woman's third child, sustained injuries and was taken to Melaka Hospital by ambulance at around 7am," he said in a statement. Dzulkhairi said investigations at the scene led the police to the arrest of a 17-year-old suspect, who is also the second child of the family. Later during a press conference at the Melaka police headquarters, Dzulkhairi said the police also seized a folding knife, about 20cm long, in the suspect's school bag. When asked on the motive behind the murder, Dzulkhairi did not rule out the possibility that it stemmed from resentment, as the woman and her eldest son had allegedly frequently scolded the suspect and pressured him to revise his studies. "Neighbours claimed there were frequent arguments in the house, and the suspect was under pressure as he was forced to study, possibly because he was preparing for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination," he said. Dzulkhairi also said the police believed the murder was premeditated, as it was found that the weapon used in the murder had been purchased in advance. "The teenager also attempted to destroy evidence, including discarding blood-stained clothing in nearby bushes, but we managed to recover them," he added. He said the suspect confessed to initially trying to kill the teacher while she was in the bedroom but was discovered by his older brother, who was then also stabbed while attempting to protect their mother. The suspect then allegedly tried to kill his 13-year-old younger brother after the latter refused to leave the house when ordered to do so. "However, when the boy refused, he was also stabbed. "The victim managed to escape and was found covered in blood in the porch area of the house before being rescued by neighbours after they heard him shouting for help," he said. Dzulkhairi said the bodies have been sent to the Melaka Hospital's Forensics Department for post-mortem. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. Earlier today, it was reported a teacher and her eldest son were found dead, while another son was rushed to hospital in what is believed to be a case of double murder early this morning. It is learnt that members of the public made the gruesome discovery when they saw the body of one of the victims in front of a house in Bukit Rambai and alerted the police at about 6am.
