Tourist killed in Puerto Rico had flown over for Bad Bunny concert

Independent11 hours ago
A US tourist visiting Puerto Rico for a Bad Bunny residency has been fatally shot in the early hours of Sunday morning at La Perla, a well-known seaside community, according to police.
The victim has been identified as 25-year-old Kevin Mares, a New York resident. The shooting occurred at a nightspot named 'Shelter for Mistreated Men' within La Perla, a coastal area that has long grappled with its troubled past.
Homicide detective Sergeant Arnaldo Ruiz stated in a phone interview that the incident unfolded when an argument broke out among several individuals near Mr Mares. A firearm was then produced, and at least three people, including Mr Mares, were shot.
Two other men, residents of La Perla, sustained injuries and are currently hospitalised.
Ruiz said Mares was an innocent bystander. He was with three other friends who told police they were in Puerto Rico for one of Bad Bunny 's 30 concerts, which have attracted tens of thousands of visitors to the U.S. territory.
Mares was shot on the left side of his abdomen and was taken to Puerto Rico's largest public hospital, where he died, authorities said.
Ruiz said police don't yet know what the people were arguing about and don't have a description of the shooter. 'We have very little information,' he said.
Ruiz added that Mares' three friends also were from New York. He didn't have their hometowns.
La Perla is located on the outskirts of a historic district popular with tourists known as Old San Juan. A couple hundred people live in the shantytown, which once served as Puerto Rico's biggest distribution point for heroin and was known for its violence.
Police used to avoid the community, which used to have a sign proclaiming, 'Not open to visitors. Do not enter.'
But violence eased when hundreds of federal agents raided the slum in 2011 and arrested dozens of people, including a well-known community leader who was later convicted.
The neighborhood became even safer and more welcoming after Puerto Rican singers Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featured it in their hit, 'Despacito.'
But isolated, violent incidents persist.
In February 2023, three tourists were stabbed after police said a person told them to stop filming inside the community.
Then in April 2024, a 24-year-old tourist from Delaware was killed and his body set on fire after police said he and a friend were attacked following a drug purchase. Police said the victims were trying to take pictures of La Perla after being warned not to do so.
The island of 3.2 million people has reported 277 killings so far this year, compared with 325 killings in the same period last year.

Murder victim was ‘beloved' father and grandfather, family say

A man who was killed in Co Down has been described by his family as a 'beloved' father and grandfather. The body of Stephen Brannigan, who was in his 50s, was found in a house in Marian Park in Downpatrick on Sunday afternoon. Police are investigating if his death is linked to an attack on a priest in the town, Fr John Murray. A 30-year-old man is being questioned on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. In a statement, Mr Brannigan's family said: 'In the midst of our shock, pain and total heartbreak at the news of the brutal murder of our beloved dad, grandad, son and brother Stephen yesterday, we want to convey our sincere thanks to all those who have surrounded us with such love and care in the hours that have followed. 'We want to express our particular thanks to those who organised and gathered for the beautiful prayer vigil in St Brigid's Church in the town on Sunday evening. 'It means so much to us at this difficult time and reflects the very special people who make up the Marian Park and wider Downpatrick community.' The family said they wanted to convey their concern for Fr Murray, who remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital. The statement added: 'Fr John is highly respected by our family and by all in our community. 'It is so typical of his kindness that he was willing to reach out in trust to someone he believed was in distress, despite the obvious risk to himself. 'With so many others, we pray for his full recovery and thank him for his own prayers for us which he has conveyed through the priests of the parish. 'Stephen was known among his neighbours and friends as someone who was always willing to help out, ready to do whatever needed to be done for the good of others. 'Even the day before he died, he was tending the graves of friends and neighbours, as he did, almost every day, the grave of his late wife Dorenda, who died five years ago from cancer. 'Stephen faced many difficult issues in his life. We know his life was not perfect. But for us, he was our dad, our grandad, our son and our brother. 'His rock through all of this was Dorenda. We pray they will be reunited now in perfect peace and love.'

Read our Privacy notice A woman who was both a beloved teacher and the mother of a country music star was stabbed to death in her home in Rockingham County, Virginia, according to local police. Holly Hatcher, whose son is country singer Spencer Hatcher, was fatally stabbed during a home invasion on Sunday, August 3. Her husband, Michael, 65, was also injured in the incident, but managed to retrieve his handgun and kill the attacker with a single shot, Rockhingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson told reporters. Deputies identified the suspect as Kevin Moses Walker, 41, of Pikesville, Maryland. "This is a highly unusual, apparently completely random [attack] with an individual with no known history of violent behavior of any kind, or even criminal behavior of any kind," the sheriff said. open image in gallery Country music singer Spencer Hatcher and Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson discuss the fatal stabbing of Hatcher's mother, Holly, during an August 3 home invasion ( CBS 6/ screengrab ) It's unclear exactly why Walker traveled nearly three hours southwest from Pikesville to visit New Market, a small town in the shadow of the Shenandoah Mountains. What deputies did learn was that Walker went camping at Endless Caverns, an attraction in New Market, two days before the attack, and toured the caverns. On the same day, he reportedly bought a sleeping bag and a large knife from a Walmart approximately seven miles away in Timberville, according to CBS 6. The next day, Virginia State Police were dispatched to investigate reports of an abandoned vehicle on Endless Caverns Road. When they arrived, they found the tourist attraction's gift shop had broken into, and damage at the scene suggested a vehicle had been rammed into the building. The state troopers determined that someone had broken into the building and entered the caverns, but they found no evidence of theft. At that point they identified Walker as a suspect and a felony warrant for his arrest was issued. The state police began searching for him with patrols and drones. The day after that, just before noon, the sheriff's office received a call from Michael Hatcher reporting the deadly home invasion. open image in gallery Kevin Moses Walker, 41, of Pikesville, Maryland, is the man Rockingham County sheriff's deputies believe killed school teacher Holly Hatcher and wounded her husband, Michael, on August 3, 2025. Walker was killed by Michael Hatcher during the attack. ( Rockingham County Sheriff's Department ) When deputies arrived, they found the injured elder Hatcher standing outside his home. Walker was dead on the driveway, while Holly Hatcher was found inside the house with fatal stab wounds. "There's going to be questions that will never be answered, but all I can tell you is we've cried, we've hurt, and we've hugged, and we have found more love than we have ever known has existed between us, and between you," Michael Hatcher said in a statement to the community. Spencer Hatcher, who appeared with the sheriff to discuss the timeline of what happened, said he and his family were only interested in discussing the known facts about the case and did not want to engage in speculation about the attack. The murder hit home for the sheriff, who said that Holly Hatcher was a well known and well-liked teacher who had taught his own son. He admitted that the murder was beyond anything he'd experienced during his time in law enforcement. "I've been in law enforcement for 31 years and I have never seen anything like this in my entire career," While no charges will result from the murder as the suspect is dead, the sheriff's department said an investigation is still ongoing.

Boyfriend from hell abducted woman he was dating and kept her trapped in his home for six months, cops say

A Texas man has been arrested after allegedly abducting a woman he was dating and keeping her locked inside his home for at least six months. Kenneth Leon Wright, 41, held the victim in a home with windows nailed-shut and doors locked from the outside so she couldn't escape, ABC13 reported. Wright has now been been charged with aggravated kidnapping and assault family violence. According to court documents, Wright hid the woman and subjected her to abuse for at least 6 months. The victim's alleged sister, Shenita Carter, said she had no idea where her sibling was living and that Wright would only occasionally bring her to visit family earlier this month. 'He would not give us the address,' Carter told the outlet. 'He would only bring her to my mom's house.' Kenneth Leon Wright, 41, held the victim in a home with windows nailed-shut and doors locked from the outside so she couldn't escape Her sister then called her, claiming she was being abused, Carter revealed. Their mother managed to track down the address and called the police for a welfare check. When Carter arrived, she said she was shocked by the conditions of the home. Carter recalled the front door locking from the outside, no key for her sister and windows nailed shut. '(It's) disgusting, sad the fact that this is how she had been living,' Carter said. 'The windows have nails on them,' she added. Another woman who answered the door at the apartment listed in Wright's court documents identified herself as Wright's current girlfriend and insisted he was 'taking care' of the alleged victim and not holding her against her will.
