Syria briefly detains head of Palestinian group: faction officials

Arab News03-05-2025
DAMASCUS: Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command officials said Syrian Arab Republic authorities on Saturday briefly detained the head of the faction, which was close to ousted ruler Bashar Assad's government.
Talal Naji's detention came just weeks after Palestinian group Islamic Jihad's armed wing said the new authorities had held two of its officials on unspecified charges.
The United States, which considers Palestinian factions including the PFLP-GC to be 'terrorist' organizations, has said Washington will not ease Assad-era sanctions on Syria until it has verified progress on priorities including acting against 'terrorism.'
An official from the Damascus-based PFLP-GC, requesting anonymity as the matter is sensitive, told AFP that 'secretary-general Talal Naji was arrested' in the city.
Another official confirmed the arrest, while a third faction source said 'Naji was asked... to report to one of the security branches and has not returned. Most likely he was arrested.'
Two PFLP-GC officials later confirmed Naji had been released, with one saying he was held for 10 hours and freed after 'local and international mediation.'
The official said it remained unclear why he had been arrested.
The second source confirmed Naji's release, saying: 'He's at home and in good health.'
Last month, a statement from the Al-Quds Brigades said Islamic Jihad's Syria official Khaled Khaled and organizing committee member Yasser Al-Zafri had been detained for days 'without explanation.'
The Iran-backed group expressed hope 'that our brothers in the Syrian government' will free the pair, noting their detention comes as the group is 'fighting the Zionist enemy' in the Gaza Strip.
In late March, US State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said Syria's new authorities should 'fully renounce and suppress terrorism, exclude foreign terrorist fighters from any official roles (and) prevent Iran and its proxies from exploiting Syrian territory.'
The PFLP-GC was founded in 1968 after breaking away from the leftist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
When conflict erupted in Syria in 2011 with the brutal repression of peaceful pro-democracy protests, the PFLP-GC stood firmly by Assad's government.
After militants and rebels overran parts of the Yarmuk Palestinian refugee camp on the outskirts of Damascus in 2012, the PFLP-GC's armed wing fought alongside Syrian government forces to take it back.
The group is designated as a 'terrorist organization' by the United States and European Union and is accused of masterminding the deadly bombing of Swissair Flight SR330 in February 1970, as well as several attacks on Israeli civilians.

Saudi Crown Prince, Palestinian President Discuss Support for Palestinian Cause

The Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Salman, received a phone call on Monday from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, during which they discussed ongoing efforts to support the Palestinian cause. President Abbas expressed his gratitude for Saudi Arabia's unwavering commitment, under the leadership of King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed, which has led many nations to recognise the State of Palestine. He also praised the Kingdom's efforts to coordinate international support for Palestine, particularly during the recent conference in New York. The two leaders reviewed the situation in Gaza, addressing both security and humanitarian concerns. Crown Prince Mohammed reaffirmed Saudi Arabia's condemnation of the violence against Palestinians, emphasising the need for the international community to address the devastating effects of the ongoing aggression and ensure civilian protection. Al Jazeera Holds Vigil for Journalists Killed in Gaza Airstrike

Al Jazeera journalists held a solemn vigil at the network's headquarters in Doha on Monday, mourning five of their colleagues killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza the previous night. The victims, including prominent correspondent Anas al-Sharif, reporter Mohammed Qreiqeh, and cameramen Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, and Moamen Aliwa, were reportedly targeted while sheltering in a tent in Gaza City. Dozens of staff gathered inside Al Jazeera's Arabic studio, displaying photos of the slain journalists and vowing to continue their coverage of the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, now in its 22nd month. Among those attending was Wael al-Dahdouh, the network's Gaza bureau chief, who previously lost his wife and children to Israeli strikes. Also present was Fadi Al Wahidi, a cameraman who was left paralyzed after being shot in the neck while reporting in the territory. 'Every time we lose a colleague, we lose a part of this journalistic family,' al-Dahdouh told AFP. 'Despite our solidarity and protests, the attacks persist in defiance of international law.' Rejecting Israel's Claims The Israeli military confirmed the strike that killed al-Sharif, alleging he was a Hamas operative posing as a journalist—a claim strongly rejected by Al Jazeera. Senior presenter Tamer Almisshal, who oversees Gaza coverage, dismissed the Israeli accusation as 'baseless,' saying such claims often follow the deaths of Palestinian journalists. 'Israel wants to silence the truth by killing those who report it,' he said. Al-Sharif had previously been the subject of public threats and disinformation campaigns. In July, the Committee to Protect Journalists urged protection for him, accusing the Israeli military of targeting him online. With foreign media largely unable to access Gaza, international outlets—including AFP—rely heavily on local Palestinian journalists for frontline reporting. According to Reporters Without Borders, over 200 journalists have been killed in Gaza since the war began, including several from Al Jazeera. Al-Dahdouh described the dire conditions facing journalists still working inside the besieged enclave. 'They endure threats, fear, hunger, and displacement,' he said. 'Some have become unrecognisable, having lost half their body weight—but their dedication to this mission keeps them going.' Short link : Post Views: 41

US slams Iran over Houthi Red Sea attacks, calls on UN to hold accountable violators of arms embargo

NEW YORK CITY: The US on Monday accused Iran of fueling maritime insecurity in the Red Sea by supplying weapons and other materials to the Houthis in Yemen, following the latest deadly attacks on commercial vessels last month. Speaking during a UN Security Council debate on maritime security, Washington's acting ambassador, Dorothy Shea, condemned the Houthis for the recent attacks that resulted in the sinking of two commercial ships, the deaths of crew members and the taking of hostages. Iran 'poses a threat to maritime security through its support for the Houthis and other terrorist groups and its seizure of vessels transiting international waters,' Shea told council members. 'Just last month, the Houthis attacked and sank two commercial vessels, resulting in loss of life, injury to sailors, and the capture of hostages.' She reiterated the US demand that Tehran releases all detained vessels, including the MSC Aries, a container ship linked to an Israeli billionaire. It was seized by Iranian forces in April 2024 while transiting the Gulf of Oman, in what Tehran described as retaliatory action following Israeli airstrikes in Syria. The vessel, chartered by the Mediterranean Shipping Company, had a crew of 25, mostly Indian nationals. They were held for several weeks by Iranian authorities before being released but the ship remains impounded. 'The United States calls for Iran to release the vessels it still holds, including the MSC Aries,' Shea said, as she urged all UN member states to comply with the arms embargo on the Houthis. She accused Iran and other countries of violating this embargo by supplying the group with rockets, munitions and other components used in attacks on shipping in the Red Sea. 'This council must impose meaningful consequences for sanctions violations and seek additional ways to cut off the international funding and resources fueling the Houthi weapons programs,' Shea said. Under UN Security Council Resolution 2216, adopted in 2015, all member states are prohibited from supplying arms, ammunition and related materiel to Houthi forces. The embargo remains in place despite calls from some humanitarian groups for an easing of restrictions to meet civilian needs. The UN Verification and Inspection Mechanism, established in 2016, is tasked with inspecting all commercial cargo entering Yemen through Red Sea ports to ensure compliance with the embargo. Despite this measure, several reports by the UN's Panel of Experts have documented the continuing flow of arms to the Houthis, including missile components and drones believed to originate in Iran. This year, the US and the UK launched limited airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen following a string of maritime attacks. The group's campaign has continued, however, demonstrating access to a growing arsenal of anti-ship ballistic and cruise missiles. Shea said the US has 'overwhelmingly borne the costs' of defending freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and called for greater sharing of this burden, including financial support for the Verification and Inspection Mechanism.
