Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has experienced plenty of playoff heartbreak over the years, but there's one loss in particular that's still keeping him up at night.
In 2022, the Cowboys suffered a 23-17 loss at home to the San Francisco 49ers on Wild Card weekend. The game ended with Dak Prescott failing to spike the football in time. One year later, Dallas lost 19-12 to San Francisco in the Divisional Round. "America's Team" had a chance to go down the field and tie the game, but it ended on a botched trick play involving Ezekiel Elliott.
The very next season, the Cowboys found themselves at home for a Wild Card matchup against the Green Bay Packers. They were heavily favored heading into that game, and yet, they had no answer for Matt LaFleur's offense. Jordan Love had his way with Dallas, completing 16-of-21 passes for 272 yards with three touchdowns. Aaron Jones, meanwhile, had 118 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries.
During the newest Netflix series, "America's Team," Jones opened up about the Cowboys' 48-32 loss to the Packers. He made it seem like it was the most painful loss in franchise history.
"What a disaster," Jones said. "This loss hurt us, in every way, more than any one we've ever had."
Fans don't agree with that claim.
"I know it's fresh but I'm not sure it's even in my top 5. The 3 NFC champ in row 80-82 were gut wrenching(especially the catch), as was the 49ers breakup of our 4 peat in the 90s. Cardinals, Rams, 49ers time run out, and Packers Dez catch all worse than the 2023 game in my opinion," one fan said.
"Hurt so much you refuse to re-sign Micah, refuse to sign decent FA's. Yea ok Jerry lol. It didn't hurt at all because cowboys value at $12b and that's more important to you than winning," a second fan pointed out.
"Hurt so much that he kept McCarthy around for another year and let Quinn go resurrect a division rival," another fan wrote.
"And in the response to such a big loss Jerry respond by do absolute nothing different and continue operate same way," a Cowboys fan commented.
It's safe to say Cowboys fans aren't buying what Jones is selling.
The Cowboys failed to bounce back from their playoff loss to the Packers, finishing 7-10 during the 2024 regular season. To be fair, Prescott missed a good chunk of the year with a season-ending hamstring injury.
While it's possible this could be the year that Dallas avenges its playoff failures, there's a lot going against Jones' squad. For starters, he hired an unproven head coach in Brian Schottenheimer. There's also the Micah Parsons contract situation that hasn't been resolved. If he misses time, that'd be a crushing blow to the defense. After all, he has racked up 256 tackles and 52.5 sacks since entering the league.
The Cowboys will be put to the test in Week 1 when they take on the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field.
