South Fulton mayor defends controversial spending during ‘Mayor Mondays' event
Some City of South Fulton residents got to hear from Mayor Kobi himself on Monday as he defended himself against allegations that he misused taxpayer money.
'There are all of these allegations that these were personal trips,' the mayor told Channel 2 investigative reporter Ashli Lincoln.
Residents participated in what the mayor is calling Mayor Mondays. There residents were given a tour and participated in a conversation.
'I think the mayor gets some unjust criticism,' resident Mike Johnson said.
Residents were shown a $20,000 media studio, a multi-recreational table, that converts from a working table to a pool table, that's worth more than $1,000 and other renovations the mayor made to his office.
'There's not a purchase that we've made that I didn't talk with the city manager about,' the mayor said.
The mayor told Lincoln all of the international trips he went on were business-related and were a part of his economic development and world tour.
In an excerpt the mayor wrote on his website kobicares.com, he said:
'Mayor Kobi has a vision for economic development in South Fulton, Georgia beyond warehouses and data centers. By circulating our dollars not just locally, but throughout the African Diaspora, we can build an independent, international financial network. With a median household income of $82,000, one of America's highest homeownership rates, and a population that is 92 percent African American, South Fulton — the Blackest City in the United States — is perfectly positioned to be a global hub of Black commerce.'

The mayor detailed all of his spending on his website.
In July he was invited to Paris for a conference by a politician to speak at the 'When World's Collide' conference.
In September he was invited to Kenya by the Pan African Council. And in January the Ghana Tourism Authority invited the mayor to speak.
Kobi told Lincoln, that every international trip he went on, was for economic development purposes for the City of South Fulton.
South Fulton Mayor Kahlid Kamau, now known as Mayor Kobi, is currently under investigation for purchase card and purchasing order expenses dating back to 2022.
Lincoln reviewed multiple city policies and ordinances. A January audit trail shows a $19,000 purchase order for an unapproved media lab.
City ordinance states any purchase over $2,500 must be approved by the city manager.
A city official told Lincoln they are looking into why some purchases were not approved by either the current interim purchase manager or the city manager.
Documents also show multiple airline purchases where the mayor bought unapproved flights for himself and employees. Banks statements show a plane ticket was purchased for employees to Paris, Toronto, and South America.
'You have a travel policy, you have a (purchasing) card policy, you have to get authorized to travel before you make that P-card purchase, he wasn't authorized to travel, he made the P-card purchase because he has the card and was allowed to swipe it,' former City of South Fulton purchasing manager Malcolm Whichard said.
City ordinance indicates only the city clerk has the authority to approve employees to go on trips.
Several transactions also showed multiple flight upgrades. The city's P-card policy only allowed for economy flights to be purchased and doesn't allow upgrades.
On Tuesday, the city council filed an ethics complaint against Mayor Kobi. Once the investigation is presented to the ethics board, it will decide to recommend resignation, repayment, or other sanctions.
Channel 2 Action News reached out to the City Manager's office for a comment regarding authorizing P-card purchases, but so far has not heard back.

Ohio Democrats elect Kathleen Clyde as new party chair ahead of 2026 election
Former state Rep. Kathleen Clyde will lead the Ohio Democratic Party as candidates prepare for 2026 and seek to break the Republican Party's hold on Ohio. The Democrats' executive committee tapped Clyde to replace former party chair Liz Walters, who resigned to become CEO of a political data firm in Washington, D.C. The shakeup came months after a brutal election for Ohio Democrats, leaving state Supreme Court Justice Jennifer Brunner as the only Democrat in statewide office. Get The Scoop!: Sign up for our weekly Ohio politics podcast Despite past defeats, Clyde believes the party has an opportunity to capitalize on backlash against President Donald Trump and reclaim power in 2026. In her new role, she'll help recruit and support candidates, raise money and organize get-out-the-vote efforts. "Democrats need to unify around a message that shows what these harmful policies coming out of Washington and the statehouse mean for our economy, our health care, social security," Clyde told the statehouse bureau ahead of the June 10 vote. "We need to offer a compelling message about what Democrats do when they're in power." Clyde, a Portage County native who lives in Columbus, was once considered a rising star in the Ohio Democratic Party. She served four terms in the Ohio House and unsuccessfully ran for secretary of state in 2018. After that, she was appointed to the Portage County Board of Commissioners, but lost when she ran for her seat two years later. Clyde had the backing of former Sen. Sherrod Brown, who Democrats hope will run for governor or U.S. Senate in 2026. Several Democrats challenged Clyde in the race for chair, but her biggest rival − state Sen. Bill DeMora of Columbus − dropped out before the vote. DeMora said he wasn't supporting any remaining candidates, including Clyde. As party chair, Clyde said she wants to tackle urban, suburban and rural areas with different strategies and work with county parties to meet voters where they are. She said Democrats also need to address depressed turnout in Ohio's largest cities and ensure they listen to the needs of Black voters who abandoned the party. "I feel confident that we can come together as Democrats and focus on the work ahead of turning the state around and winning at all levels of government for the working people and putting the needs of Ohioans first," Clyde said. Doechii condemns Trump for ‘ruthless attacks' on Los Angeles in BET Awards acceptance speech
Grammy Award-winning rapper Doechii denounced the 'ruthless attacks' on Los Angeles by the federal government while accepting the BET Award for female hip-hop artist on Monday night. 'Trump is using military forces to stop a protest,' the 'Denial Is a River' singer said. 'And I want you all to consider what kind of government it appears to be when every time we exercise our democratic right to protest, the military is deployed against us. What type of government is that?' On Friday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted workplace raids in L.A.'s garment district. Agents detained workers inside Ambiance Apparel, prompting protests. On Saturday morning, ICE agents gathered inside a gated industrial park in Paramount near a Home Depot. Word of their presence spread on social medial, which prompted protesters to arrive. Federal agents and sheriff's deputies fired tear gas and flash-bang rounds at the demonstrators, who threw items toward them. In response, President Trump deployed roughly 2,000 National Guard and 700 active-duty U.S. Marines from Camp Pendleton to protect federal agents. 'People are being swept up and torn from their families and I feel it's my responsibility as an artist to use this moment to speak up for all oppressed people,' Doechii said. 'For Black people, for Latino people, for trans people, for the people in Gaza, we all deserve to live in hope and not in fear.' Doechii was not the only artist to publicly criticize the president and the federal government during the ceremony. Before singer Ledisi took the stage, actor, writer and producer Tyler Perry called out Hollywood studios for their silence in times when 'politicians are removing books from libraries, history and names from government buildings.' 'This is not the time to be silent, this is not the time to give up — this is the time to dig in and keep leaving footprints everywhere you go.'

Ford Sales Soar: Which Models are Driving the Trend
Ford Motor Company reported a 16% sales increase to 220,959 in May year-over-year, with positive gains at both Ford and Lincoln. Hybrid vehicles led the way with a 28.9% sales increase, totaling 22,719 units, with internal combustion engine sales up 17.2% to 191,517 units. In terms of segments, Ford's SUV sales saw the most significant gain at 25% to 94,595 units. Truck sales followed behind the SUV uptick at an 11.2% increase to 121,354 units. However, Ford Motor Company's electric vehicle (EV) sales plummeted 25% in May to 6,723 units. The car class saw a less dramatic decrease of 3.2% to 5,010 units, according to Ford Authority. Ford's new American Made campaign, centered around offering employee pricing, appears to primarily be fueling the company's overall sales gain as drivers strive to get ahead of tariff-imposed vehicle cost increases. Lincoln reported a 39% increase in May sales, and Ford Motor Company's total sales are up 6.1% to 930,925 vehicles compared to the first five months of 2024. The 2025 Escape was one of Ford's best-sellers in May, with sales catapulting 24% to 17,395 units. Ford's 2024 Explorer saw a 23% sales increase to 20,504 vehicles. Bronco Sport sales rose 46% to 14,472 units, and the Maverick saw a 14% gain to 15,508 deliveries. Financial analyst Dan Ives, managing director at Wedbush Securities, said "the monthly sales were better than feared and is a small step in the right direction," but added that there's "still a lot of wood to chop ahead for (CEO) Jim Farley and Ford with tariffs and demand issues," the Detroit Free Press reports. While Ford Motor Company extended its employee pricing marketing to July 6, which affects nearly all 2024 and 2025 Ford and Lincoln vehicles, the American automaker announced price hikes up to $2,000 last month on three of its Mexico-produced models: the Mach-E SUV, Maverick pickup, and Bronco Sport SUV. May represented the third consecutive year-over-year double-digit sales increase at Ford. Cox Automotive expects May sales across all automakers to rise 3.2% from last year and 2.5% from last month, but the month's sales pace will be significantly less than March and April, according to NBC. Besides weak May EV sales numbers, Ford has issued over 50 U.S. recalls in 2025, the most of any automaker. Through May 15, Volkswagen Group had issued the second-most recalls at 14. While EV sales were one of May's lowlights at Ford, the company's Mustang Mach-E experienced an 11% year-over-year sales surge to 4,724 units. Ford Motor Company stock finished at a 2.10% daily market increase and 5.6% year-over-year growth on Tuesday. With its third consecutive year-over-year double-digit sales increase and a 16% year-over-year sales increase for May, Ford has momentum that's crucial to the company mitigating trade war-related impacts, including $1.5 billion in added net costs for 2025. Ford Chair John Lawler said the automaker will adjust operations over the next 12 to 24 months in response to tariffs, but as of now, weak EV sales and regular recalls aren't significantly hurting the company's standing.
