Doctor Who star's show dropped from UK streaming service confirms ITV launch
More than a year after it was pulled off Paramount Plus, a mystery drama starring Jodie Whittaker is returning to UK screens. A month after it aired in Australia, the series One Night was made available to UK viewers in November 2024. The six-part series followed friends Tess (Jodie), Simone (Nicole da Silva) and Hat (Yael Stone), whose lives have been changed by 'the traumatic events of one night in their hometown twenty years previously'. It was teased of the show: 'One Night is the story of three women whose bond was all but destroyed by the traumatic events of one night 20 years ago. 'Since then, Simone has harboured secret hopes of becoming a novelist but most of her haphazard attempts have been shoved into her bottom drawer. Now, at the age of 40, she has finally written the one story she could never get out of her mind, and her debut manuscript has become an unexpected overnight success. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. 'But it soon becomes apparent that the devastating story the book tells doesn't exclusively belong to her. At the heart of Simone's novel is a tragedy which also happened to Tess (Jodie Whittaker) and Hat (Yael Stone), her two childhood best friends. 'As it becomes harder to prise fact from fiction, one person's memory and story from another's, the book threatens to derail all their friendships, bringing old traumas to the surface of the small coastal community where they grew up, and stirring its perpetrators, who want to make it all go away.' Despite it being labelled a 'very solid crime drama' by critics, One Night suddenly disappeared from Paramount after just three months. It was explained at the time that this was due to the platform reportedly shifts towards a focus on Hollywood-style content with mass appeal and wider cost-savings efforts. However, ITV has now announced it will be bringing the show back and allowing viewers to tune in again – or for the first time. One Night will now stream in full from Saturday August 16 and will also air that night on ITV1. At the time of its release, The Guardian wrote the following about One Night: 'The overall effect is very much of an Australian Big Little Lies – a female-centred story played out mostly amongst affluent people in shiny clothes and shinier houses.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'With strong performances and a diverse cast, it demands attention — but its biggest triumph may just be in the conversations it sparks after its watched,' The London Evening Standard shared. 'The show might have benefitted from unspooling its central narrative over fewer episodes because after the halfway mark the drama becomes less character-driven, skating into crime mystery territory. But the acting throughout One Night is incredible,' The Age added. One Night was the first TV role since playing the first female Doctor for Jodie. Reflecting on what drew her to the project, the 41-year-old actress explained that the drama depicted a story about sexual assault in a way that felt 'completely unique' to her. 'What made this completely unique to me and completely engrossing was the change of POV [point of view],' she told Metro. 'Very often it's told from outside in – there's an investigation, there's detectives, there's people working things out. This is about the decimation something like that can have. 'It's also about how the event – whether it happened a minute ago or 20 years ago – is defining for a group of women that it affects, particularly this friendship group. But also what it's about is how we all survive something like that and who owns memory, who has the right to tell stories, and especially if that story is true.' More Trending One Night was created and written by the award-winning Emily Ballou (The Slap, Taboo) and directed by Catherine Millar (The Twelve, The Secrets She Keeps) and Lisa Matthews (Doctor Doctor). It also stars Kat Stewart, George Mason, Erroll Shand, Noni Hazlehurst, Tina Bursill (Doctor Doctor), William Zappa, Damien Strouthos and Jillian Nguyen. One Night is streaming on ITVX from Saturday August 16. It will air that night at 9.30pm on ITV1. View More » A version of this article was originally published on February 5, 2024. Got a story? Amazon Prime's ‘amazing' new crime thriller jumps to top of streaming charts
The Assassin, which was released on Amazon Prime Video last month, has leapt to the top of the platform's streaming charts. The action thriller stars Keeley Hawes as titular assassin Julie, who reunites with her estranged son (Edward, played by Freddie Highmore) after he tracks her down with questions about her past. The pair soon become entangled in a high-octane, high-stakes conspiracy when her past catches up with her. With a huge target on their backs, mother and son are forced to go on the run, in an ambitious plot Metro's own Sabrina Barr describes as 'Mamma Mia combined with Taken.' Released on July 25, the series earned rave reviews for its 'entertaining action' and shocking twists. This has helped The Assassin to fend off heavy hitters like Clarkson's Farm, The Summer I Turned Pretty and Neighbours in the battle of the UK streaming charts. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video As per a report by Flixpatrol, The Assassin has become the most streamed piece of entertainment on Amazon Prime, beating 2023's Barbie and the Eddie Murphy vehicle The Pickup on its journey to supremacy. The Assassin is currently sitting at a 92% 'Fresh' rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with Empire Magazine praising its 'cutthroat action' and 'cutting' dynamic between its stars. Elsewhere, The Guardian described it as 'so much fun,' while The Telegraph called it 'Mamma Mia! with a sniper rifle.' While the audience score is more divided at 38%, those who enjoyed the show have responded well to its dark sense of humour and explosive action. 'Super fun. If you liked the tourist you'll like this series. Dark quirky humour with lots of action. This isn't for everyone you'll need to be able to think on your feet to enjoy the ride!' wrote Rotten Tomatoes user Kay M. 'This was fun, exciting and thrilling. I wished it lasted longer,' said Yeremiah A. Sas B chimed in: 'I loved this – the acting is amazing, the characters and situations fairly hilarious.. it's a dark comedy! More please!' Speaking on the blend of comedy and action, Freddie told Metro: '[The humour's] not too broad or too silly, but it complements the seriousness of it and gives it a bit of texture and nuance, and also keeps it quite real,' Freddie outlines. 'The characters are all accessible and approachable and definitely make mistakes. Even with Keeley's character, who's incredibly accomplished at what she does, the show doesn't try to make her impossibly perfect. 'I think a part of that is the sense of humour and that British dose of self-deprecation.' Meanwhile, Line of Duty and Finding Alice star Keeley has weighed in on her turn as the titular assassin, describing herself as 'basically the new Tom Cruise.' More Trending Reacting to the description of her character as a 'perimenopausal James Bond' she told The Observer: 'When I saw that line in the script, I howled with laughter. You even glimpse her popping HRT pills. I don't think I've ever seen that in a drama before. Going into the specifics of her action hero training she revealed: 'I had weapons training. There's a scene where I assemble a sniper rifle in a slick way. It's worryingly easy, actually. Even if you put the components of a rifle in front of me now, a year later, I could probably do it quite quickly. It's a bit like riding a bike.' Celebrity SAS star needs surgery after ‘ripping' vulva in one of show's worst injuries
This series of Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Win s features one of the most excruciating – and arguably worst ever – injuries in the show's history, with X Factor star Lucy Spraggan revealing she tore her vulva. Singer Lucy opened up about the agonising injury ahead of the programme's continuation this weekend, explaining that she was left bleeding with a rip so severe that she is undergoing reconstructive surgery. The 34-year-old's wound was caused by a harness during a stunt and due to the level of bleeding and intensity of the show, she recalled her 'dignity had gone' when the doctor came over to inspect her. 'I ripped my labia – it was bad,' she told The Sun. 'That's not a common injury. Actually, genuinely, that's never been the same, so much so I'm having some surgery soon to correct it.' Revealing she didn't 'really know even what happened' to cause the tear, Lucy's best guess is simply that the harness 'was tight'. 'I was like: 'This feels really bad. Surely there can't be anything.' And I looked and there was a tear, there was lots of blood and the doctor came over and I turned around because at that point you literally don't care about anything. Dignity has gone,' she added. She also explained that the medic initially thought it was her leg that was bleeding before she corrected them. Horrific as that is, it's also not the only injury the star suffered during filming for the series as she also almost knocked a tooth out, fainted and landed face-first in the sea after attempting to jump from a helicopter into a boat. This left her with a black eye for her wedding day in June 2024 and forced her to have filler from under her eye dissolved after she 'hit the sea so hard my filler migrated to the side of my face'. Previous gruesome injuries from across the show's series include Geordie Shore star Marnie Simpson's breast implant becoming infected, Strictly Come Dancing star Pete Wicks knocked himself unconscious and breaking ribs and former soap star Jennifer Ellison puncturing her spleen. Meanwhile Jake Quickenden was rushed into emergency surgery after tendons in his shoulder were 'ripped off the bone' and politician Matt Hancock infamously suffered from trench foot. The 2025 edition of Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins kicked off in dramatic style this month, with two participants quitting during the opening episode. The famous faces were pushed straight into action as they were forced to plunge 26ft into the water and dash towards a speedboat to pick them up. This proved S Club star Hannah Spearritt 's undoing as, looking visibly ill ahead of the second task, she handed in her armband to the directing staff with the words: 'I'm done, I'm sorry, I've reached a point.' Following hot on her heels was TV dancer Louie Spence, for whom the second task – to rescue three hostages from a building before blowing it up with a grenade – pushed him a step too far and he quit. More Trending In the second episode, Love Island contestants Tasha Ghouri and Chloe Burrows, also voluntarily withdrew. Remaining participants being guided through gruelling challenges by the elite team of ex-Special Forces soldiers, Chief Instructor Billy Billingham and his team of Directing Staff (DS) – Foxy (Jason Fox), Rudy Reyes and Chris Oliver – include Traitors winner Harry Clark, Rebecca Loos, Drag Race UK star Bimini Bon-Boulash, former Love Islander Adam Collard and former footballer Troy Deeney. This year's series was shot in Wales, the home of the first phase of SAS selection in real life. Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins continues on Sunday at 9pm on Channel 4. Got a story?
