Third of sunglasses on Amazon and more pose child eye risk
Which? bought 20 pairs of sunglasses for children and found that the UV protection levels were 'dangerously low' for two of them, despite claims they offered full protection.
One third of sunglasses sold on platforms like Amazon and eBay could damage child eysight
The UV protection levels were found to be inconsistent in many of these specs (Image: Getty Images) Some sunglasses were also found to offer significantly different protection from one lens to the other.
Several models including Cute Cat Kids' Sunglasses UV Protection (£1.59 from Amazon), Classic Vintage Holiday Sunglasses UV400 (£3.99 on eBay), Kids' Aviators (£1.16 from AliExpress), Kids £1 Sunglasses (from Temu) and red heart-shaped sunglasses (£5.28 from eBay) all made either misleading claims about their ability to block UV rays or had inconsistent UV filtering.
All of the sunglasses tested were found to be missing key information, labels and markings, such as CE or UK Conformity Assessed markings (UKCA), which are required for them to be sold in the UK legally.
Which? director of policy and advocacy Rocio Concha said: 'With summer holidays approaching, it is understandable that parents will want to buy their children sunglasses, and kids and parents alike might be tempted by some of the cheap and trendy options sold online.
'Our research shows many of these models are so ineffective as to be dangerous for children to wear and this is a consequence of online marketplaces having no real responsibility or incentive for taking safety seriously.
'The Government's Product Regulation and Metrology Bill must be strengthened to include legal responsibilities for online marketplaces to ensure the products they sell on their sites are safe, with heavy fines for those that fall short of the required standards.'
An Amazon spokesman said: 'Safety is a top priority, and we require all products offered in our store to comply with applicable laws, regulations and Amazon policies.
'We continuously monitor our store and take action to maintain a safe selection for our customers, including removing non-compliant products and reaching out to sellers, manufacturers, and government agencies for additional information.
'The products in question have been removed."
AliExpress also said it had removed the items that failed Which?'s tests, adding: 'AliExpress takes product safety very seriously and we have strict rules and policies in place to ensure a safe online shopping environment.'
A spokeswoman for eBay said: 'Consumer safety is a top priority. We proactively keep our site safe and prevent prohibited listings through seller compliance audits, block filter algorithms for unsafe listings, and AI-supported monitoring by our team of in-house specialists.
'If we find an unsafe product, we remove it immediately and alert buyers, which is the exact approach we took on April 4 2025, before Which? contacted us.'
Temu said: 'We take product safety very seriously. All three flagged listings have been removed from the platform pending further review.'

And for the first time ever, the exclusive sale is four days long — compared to previous years, you have double the amount of time to shop the best discounts of the summer, including those on tech, beauty, wellness, home and kitchen products. You won't want to miss this massive sale, especially if tariffs are currently impacting your budget. This is my sixth year covering Prime Day at NBC Select, so I'm well-versed in every aspect of the sale. I'll continue updating you as we learn more about what to expect — below is all the information we have so far. Want more from NBC Select? Sign up for our newsletter, The Selection, and shop smarter. When is Prime Day 2025? Prime Day 2025 is happening from July 8 to 11. This is the first time ever that the sale is four days long compared to the typical 48 hours. Do you need to be a Prime member to shop on Prime Day? Yes, only Prime members get access to Prime Day deals. You can sign up for a Prime membership on Amazon's website or app. New members get a 30-day free trial — Amazon automatically charges you for your Prime membership once the free trial period ends. Can you shop early Prime Day deals? Yes, Prime members can shop early deals as the sale approaches. The best way to stay updated about early Prime Day deals is to download the Amazon app, which can notify you about sales in real-time. What are the best deals to shop on Prime Day? Products across all shopping categories are on sale during Prime Day, but shoppers won't know exactly what's available until the event starts. The best deals tend to be on Amazon-owned technology like Echo, Fire, Blink and Ring devices, small home and kitchen appliances, beauty products, apparel and back-to-school supplies. You'll also be able to take advantage of Amazon's Lightning Deals, flash sales that give shoppers a short window to purchase limited quantities of specific products. Looking at Prime Day bestsellers from previous years can give you a sense of what's traditionally discounted. I included examples of NBC Select readers' favorite deals from Prime Day 2024 below. What is Amazon Prime? Amazon Prime is the retailer's loyalty program. A standard membership costs $139 a year or $14.99 a month, and new members get a 30-day free trial. Amazon also offers two types of discounted accounts: Prime for Young Adults, which is $7.49 a month for those 18 to 24 years old, and Prime Access, which is $6.99 a month for those who qualify for certain government assistance programs. Benefits of a Prime membership include access to shop Prime Day deals and free, fast shipping, like free two-day, one-day and same-day delivery. Prime members also get a handful of streaming and entertainment perks, plus they can order groceries online through Whole Foods or Amazon Fresh and sign up for a free Grubhub+ membership. Is Prime Day twice a year? Since 2022, Amazon has hosted two Prime Day-level events each year: Amazon Prime Day in July and Prime Big Deal Days in October. So far, the retailer has only confirmed this summer's Prime Day. We likely won't find out if it's hosting Prime Big Deal Days until after July's event. What countries are participating in Prime Day? NEW YORK, June 17 (Reuters) - annual Prime Day sales event is scheduled for July 8 through July 11, expanding to four days from two days compared to last year, the company announced on Tuesday. Amazon shoppers rush to buy ‘powerful' bestselling fan reduced from £32 to £20 for this week's heatwave
Amazon's most popular fan is currently in a summer deal, just in time for the rising temperatures. The cooling device normally costs £32.49, but has been reduced to £20.49, making it 37% cheaper. 1 A heatwave has hit us this week, and temperatures are soaring to 30 degrees by the weekend. An overheated home can be uncomfortable, and with most UK homes lacking air con, it's no surprise that shoppers are searching for other solutions. The Honeywell TurboForce Power Fan is being snapped up by those looking to stay cool all summer without spending too much. I haven't tried it myself but over 25,000 Amazon shoppers have left reviews and 5,000 have bought it in the past month alone. There are three speeds so you can adjust the airflow, and the description says the cool breeze can be felt as far as 7 metres away which is particularly handy if you're using it while you sleep. The head also rotates by 90 degrees, which helps circulate the cool air around different areas of the room. The fan is compact, measuring 27.7 x 15.9 x 27.7cm, and weighs just 1.3kg, so it can easily be picked up and moved around the house. Some shoppers even reported buying it for holidays, vouching for its efficiency as an alternative to air conditioning. One Amazon fan wrote: ''We sometimes go away on three day "deals" in the car and somehow hotel rooms are often stuffy'', explaining that many ''don't have air conditioning.'' ''This fan proved ideal'', they commented, while also adding: ''it's small enough to be transportable but very effective when on.'' Another shopper praised their cooling purchase, commenting: ''I have mounted this fan above my bed as its wall mountable and wow, it's amazing!'' The five-star review went onto describe the fan as ''quiet enough and has three speed settings'', saying the ''airflow is good and it's very sturdy.'' As with most Amazon deals, it's unclear how long the saving will last, but if you're quick, you could have your new fan in time for the hot weather this weekend. Or, add a Mediterranean feel to your foliage, with a pair of patio palms reduced from £39.99 to £19.99. shopping home hub for our latest picks.
