King's state visit to Russia underscores deepening bilateral ties

MOSCOW: The state visit by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, to Russia from Aug 5-10 has been described as the highlight of the diplomatic ties between the two countries, said Malaysia's ambassador to Russia, Datuk Cheong Loon Lai. He said the visit is the highest-level ever made and the first by a Malaysian Head of State to Russia since diplomatic relations were established in April 1967. "His Majesty's state visit, at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir V. Putin, is a recognition of the five decades of diplomatic ties with Malaysia, which was among the earliest Asean countries to establish ties with the then Soviet Union. "This visit also reflects the crucial role of the institution of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in the context of international relations," he told Bernama here today in conjunction with Sultan Ibrahim's state visit. Cheong said the visit will begin in Moscow, where His Majesty is scheduled to hold an official meeting with Putin at the Grand Kremlin Palace. Both leaders are expected to discuss potential cooperation in the fields of trade and investment, higher education, technology and innovation, people-to-people ties, digital transformation, agriculture and food security, as well as regional and international issues. "This highest-level visit will certainly have a high impact in increasing the momentum and positive trend of bilateral relations between Malaysia and Russia. "It sends the message that Malaysia is serious and committed to efforts to strengthen and improve bilateral relations with Russia in all fields, particularly strategic cooperation and people-to-people ties," he said. Cheong said Malaysia has always valued its relationship with Russia, which is built on a pragmatic approach, openness and mutual respect. He said the Russian government welcomes His Majesty's state visit and has extended its full cooperation and support to ensure its success. Sultan Ibrahim is scheduled to arrive in Moscow on Tuesday and will be accorded a state welcome ceremony at the Kremlin on Wednesday, before holding an official meeting with Putin and attending a state banquet hosted by the Russian President. His Majesty is also scheduled to visit the Russian Automotive Technology Development Company (NAMI), as well as the Tochka Kipeniya Technology and Innovation Hub. On Friday, Sultan Ibrahim will travel to Kazan, the fifth largest city in Russia, for an audience with the Rais (Head) of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, at the Kazan Kremlin. Both parties are expected to discuss potential collaboration in the trade, investment, halal industry sectors and agricultural technology. His Majesty is also scheduled to attend a reception ceremony hosted by Minnikhanov and visit the Kazan Helicopter Plant to observe the manufacturing operations of civilian, defence and rescue helicopters. Russia is currently Malaysia's ninth-largest trading partner among European countries and 28th globally, with bilateral trade valued at RM11.46 billion (USD2.48 billion) in 2024. For the period January to June 2025, Malaysia-Russia trade volume was recorded at RM4.13 billion (USD945.7 million).

PM: No immunity in Zara's death probe

Anwar speaking at the closing ceremony of the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day 2025. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 3): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has declared that no individual implicated in the death of 13-year-old student Zara Qairina Mahathir will receive protection, regardless of rank or title. He has directed Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to ensure the probe is conducted swiftly and comprehensively. 'There was a death recently, and the Education Minister (Fadhlina Sidek) is being attacked and accused of various things. What has become of our country? This death is not a trivial matter,' he said during his speech at the closing ceremony of the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day 2025 here on Sunday. Also present were Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and his deputy Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup. Anwar also reminded the public not to make speculations or accusations without evidence, emphasising that Malaysia is a nation founded on the rule of law. 'This is a nation of law, not slander. Whoever is involved in a criminal act such as murder will not be protected,' Anwar said. 'Death is not something to be taken lightly. Even if there is a child of a poor farmer from Kundasang, if there is a death, it would be our responsibility to find out the cause.' Anwar said that whoever are involved in murders and crimes — a Tan Sri, a Datuk Seri or a minister — they will not be given any protection. 'But do not slander others, whether it's a minister's child or deputy prime minister's child. What is happening with this slander without proof?' Zara Qairina, 13, was believed to have fallen from the third floor and was found unconscious in a drain near her school dormitory in Papar, Sabah, at 4 am on July 16. She was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital here on July 17. The student's death quickly went viral, sparking widespread public reaction on social media. On Saturday, Mohd Khalid said the investigation paper regarding Zara Qairina's death had been completed and would be submitted to the Attorney General's Chambers for further action. Police have recorded statements from 60 witnesses, including students and staff of SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha Limauan, and three individuals nicknamed 'Kak Wana,' 'Kak Dedeng,' and 'Tomboi' who were cited in social media rumors. The probe focuses on two angles: the cause of death (including possible bullying) and the circumstances surrounding the incident. Investigation papers are now with Bukit Aman for review before submission to the Attorney General's Chambers. The Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sabah Tun Musa Aman, Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mustapha Sakmud, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Ali and Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun have refuted claims of their families' involvement of the case. Zara's mother, Noraidah Lamat, has distanced herself from viral claims linking her daughter's death to VIPs. Her lawyers clarified she 'never mentioned any high-profile individual' and urged the public to stop spreading unverified allegations . Police confirmed no evidence ties VIPs to the case.

Govt bent on safeguarding Sabah's rights – Anwar

Anwar speaking at the at the closing ceremony of the 2025 National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day.-Bernama photo KOTA KINABALU (Aug 3): The Federal Government remains determined to safeguard Sabah's rights as the state is an integral part of Malaysia, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim asserted. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2025 National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day here on Sunday, Anwar said the Federal Government will also continue to safeguard the nation's sovereignty against any form of intrusion, whether on land or at sea. He further emphasised that Malaysia is prepared to bring matters concerning Sabah's rights and the country's sovereignty to international court proceedings if necessary. 'Why are we doing this? Because this is our country — Sabah is part of Malaysia. We are spending tens of millions of Ringgit, maybe a hundred million Ringgit, to defend our rights. We will not allow even an inch of our land or sea to be encroached upon. 'Wherever it may be — in the Spanish courts or internationally — we will fight to the maximum to defend Sabah's rights because Sabah is part of Malaysia,' he said. Also present were Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, and his deputy Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup. Anwar said the MADANI Government is committed to driving Sabah's development and resolving demands under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) through various initiatives and allocations, stressing that the relationship between the state and Federal Governments must remain strong. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said among the resolved matters is the interim special grant for Sabah, which has been increased from RM300 million to RM600 million this year, along with an allocation of RM10 billion to complete the Pan Borneo Highway in Sabah. 'It (Pan Borneo Highway in Sabah) was delayed under the previous government, but we are continuing it under the responsibility of the Federal Government. Maybe it's not visible yet, not completed, but at least we've approved it and the work packages are in progress,' he said. On utilities, Anwar said the Federal Government has given full authority over electricity supply management to the state government, along with continuous subsidies for seven years until 2030 amounting to RM3.54 billion. To address the ongoing water supply issues, the Federal Government has approved an allocation of RM300 million, in addition to handing over projects worth under RM50 million to the state administration.
