Investigation launched after Upington teacher's alleged blackface incident

MEC Abraham Vosloo visited the Duineveld High School in Upington following an alleged 'blackface' incident at the school Image: NCDOE/Facebook An Upington high school teacher has been placed on leave pending an investigation after he was accused of a blackface incident. According to reports, the Duineveld High School teacher painted his face black and wore a black wig. A video of the event was shared on the school's social media page, but it has since been deleted. Widespread outrage and criticism prompted the Northern Cape Department of Education to place the teacher on suspension. Executive Mayor of the Dawid Kruiper municipality, David Kazi, said this despicable conduct has left learners of colour feeling degraded, disrespected, and unwelcome in a supposed educational sanctuary, and it cannot be condoned under any circumstances. "It is a deplorable reality that Duineveld High School has once again emerged as a center of racist incidents. This disturbing pattern is not an anomaly; it reflects a systemic and deeply embedded problem within the school's culture and leadership that demands immediate and uncompromising action," he said. Northern Cape Department of Education MEC Abraham Vosloo visited the school to speak to management about a way forward. At a media briefing following the meeting, Vosloo said the teacher's suspension was necessary to protect the integrity of the investigation. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ It's the second incident of racism at the school in less than a year. In September last year, a video went viral of a learner repeatedly using the k-word. In the video, that has been seen by hundreds of thousands of people, the pupil and three others join a live TikTok chat with a man identified as content creator @UncleSeeno, calling him a 'k***** and a n*****'. Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education, Joy Maimela has expressed shock and disgust at the latest incident. "I am however not surprised that racism once again poked out its ugly head at the school. During an oversight visit by the committee in October last year, the committee noted several exclusionary practices at the school and urged the NCED and the national Department of Basic Education to address this," she said. Meanwhile, the Freedom Front Plus accused the African National Congress of 'targeting high schools in Upington". It said the teacher in question is "popular and compassionate ". The party has insisted that the investigation should not turn into a witch-hunt aimed at proving racism in a bid to justify the disruption. IOL

Dagga bust is a step towards safer Cape Town communities

The City of Cape Town said it continues to battle the devastating impact of drugs on communities and said that the arrest of drug dealers has reduced crime. "The devastating impact of drugs on our communities continues long after we've taken the dealers off the streets," Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, said. "We have made a significant impact in reducing crime and taking drugs off the streets, in spite of our limited resources and powers." Metro Police officers have seized over four kilograms of dagga in Fisantekraal, adding to a series of successful drug busts that continue to improve safety in the Western Cape. The weekend haul, which included dagga-filled bags, cigarettes, and bankies, resulted in the arrest of the homeowner on Saturday, August 9. The bust is the latest in a string of enforcement actions that saw the City's enforcement services arrest 241 suspects in the past week alone. This strong focus on curbing drug-related crime is part of a broader, sustained effort by law enforcement to make communities safer.

LEAVE TO APPEAL BLOCKED

The Western Cape High Court has dismissed the application for leave to appeal brought by all three people in the case of the missing Joshlin Smith. Joshlin's mother, Kelly Smith, her boyfriend, Jacquen 'Boeta' Appollis, and Steveno van Rhyn were sentenced on 29 May, and are currently serving life plus 10 years for trafficking in persons and kidnapping. Judge Nathan Erasmus said that a sentence of life imprisonment, especially in human trafficking of a child, even when a person has shown no remorse, is inappropriate to impose a lighter sentence or allow an appeal on the sentence. In his ruling on Wednesday, he said: "Turning to the merits and the attack on that, this court made factual findings and drew inferences from circumstantial evidence, and had the benefit of observing witnesses on which I made credibility findings. "Consequently, the application for leave to appeal, insofar as Mr Appollis on the conviction is refused. Insofar as it relates to Mr Van Rhyn and Ms Smith, it is similarly refused." Earlier, Erasmus granted indemnity to Section 204 witness Lourentia Lombaard. Lombaard was the State's star witness in the trial over the disappearance of the green-eyed girl from Middelpos, Saldanha.
