Paramount TV Studios Reborn Under Skydance, One Year After Shutting Down

Yahoo3 days ago
A year ago, Paramount Television Studios was shuttered in a cost-cutting move as its parent company prepared to merge with Skydance.
With that deal on the verge of closing, the new Paramount is reviving the Paramount TV Studios name — which will in turn absorb one of the company's two remaining studio operations as well as the formerly independent Skydance Television.

Skydance TV president Matt Thunell is set to lead Paramount TV Studios, reporting to Dana Goldberg, the newly named co-chair of Paramount Pictures (with Josh Greenstein) and chair of Paramount Television.
Reps for Skydance and Paramount hadn't returned a request for comment as of publication time.
The reconstituted Paramount TV Studios will house productions currently under Showtime/MTV Entertainment, the home of prolific creator Taylor Sheridan (the Yellowstone-verse, Landman et al), key Showtime series like the Dexter franchise and Yellowjackets, and Netflix's Emily in Paris, among others. It will also be home to Skydance productions including Prime Video's Reacher and Cross — which were co-productions with the former Paramount TV Studios.
Paramount announced in August 2024 that PTVS, then led by Nicole Clemens, would shut down. Its productions — including the aforementioned Reacher and Cross and Apple TV+'s Murderbot — moved to CBS Studios. The shutdown was part of a wave of cost-cutting moves, which included hundreds of layoffs, in the year-plus leading up to the merger, which is set to formally close on Aug. 7.
Former Paramount co-CEO Chris McCarthy previously headed Showtime/MTV Entertainment but will not remain with the merged company after the deal closes. Keith Cox, head of scripted at Showtime/MTV Entertainment, is expected to stay on; Cox has a long working relationship with Sheridan and David C. Glasser, the head of 101 Studios which co-produces Sheridan's shows and Showtime's The Agency.
Thunell became president of Skydance TV in late 2022 after nearly eight years at Netflix, where he oversaw development and production of series in the U.S. and Canada.
Former Paramount co-CEO George Cheeks will have CBS Studios in his portfolio as the merged company's chair of TV media, which also includes the CBS network and the company's cable channels.
Deadline first reported the news.

Home Depot's Infamous Skelly Finds a Voice With New App for Halloween

Make no bones about it: Skelly's going high tech. Home Depot's popular 12-foot-tall skeleton decoration is coming back to life this Halloween with an app that lets you give the new Ultra Skelly a voice and new moves to scare the trick-or-treaters. The new animatronic version is shorter than the original, at 6.5 feet tall, but you can freak out your whole neighborhood with this skeleton's rotating upper torso, moving mouth and 18 LCD eye variations (ew). Skelly can now chat with visitors through five preset recordings and up to 30 seconds of custom recording, plus Bluetooth capabilities that let you interact in real time. And you can modulate your voice to make everything sound extra spooky. Skelly was originally launched in 2020, when the pandemic forced people to celebrate Halloween at a distance. Perhaps because of its giant stature -- it's easy to spot, even when social distancing -- the skeleton became a hit and has been resurrected every year since with upgrades and friends. This year those friends include dragons, trolls, scarecrows and a Skelly Cat (not to be confused with Smelly Cat). You can order Skelly and co now on the Home Depot website or app for $279.

Logan Marshall-Green Joins New YELLOWSTONE Spinoff Series Y: MARSHALS — GeekTyrant

CBS is diving deeper into the Yellowstone universe with its next big series Y: Marshals , and it just added a familiar face to the cast. Logan Marshall-Green has officially signed on to join the drama, which centers around Luke Grimes' character Kayce Dutton. Marshall-Green will portray Pete Calvin, a close friend of Kayce's from his time in the military. The character sounds like he'll be a key player in the show's action-driven narrative, which is setting out to blend the gritty world of U.S. Marshals with the rugged cowboy ethos we've come to expect from Taylor Sheridan's storytelling. According to the official logline: 'With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region's war on violence.' Y: Marshals is scheduled to debut in the middle of the 2025-2026 broadcast season with a 13-episode run on CBS. Episodes will air on Sunday nights. This new chapter in the Yellowstone franchise brings in Spencer Hudnut as writer and showrunner. The pilot will be directed by Greg Yaitanes, and it's being produced by MTV Entertainment Studios along with 101 Studios. Taylor Sheridan is executive producing alongside David C. Glasser, John Linson, Art Linson, Grimes, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, Bob Yar, Michael Friedman, Keith Cox, and Yaitanes. For fans of genre film and television, Marshall-Green is no stranger. He's best known for roles in the action-horror cult hit Upgrade , Ridley Scott's sci-fi prequel Prometheus , and Christopher Nolan's upcoming epic The Odyssey . He also appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming , Snowden , The Invitation , and Ava DuVernay's When They See Us . With its mix of modern western grit, elite law enforcement action, and deep character ties to the original Yellowstone saga, Y: Marshals is shaping up to be one of the most exciting new dramas in the upcoming TV slate.

PEACEMAKER Season 2 Will Reportedly Clear Up DCEU to DCU Continuity — GeekTyrant

The series Peacemaker began at the beginning of 2022, after having shot through 2021. It wasn't until the end of 2022 that the show's creator, James Gunn, was hired to take over the running of the studio with Peter Safran, effectively shaking up the willy nilly style of the DCEU, and streamlining the studio to run more similarly to Marvel, and becoming the DCU. Now we are about to see season 2 of Peacemaker , and things are a little different in his world, but will that be addressed? A new rumor claims that small changes will be seen in the new season. Industry scooper @MyTimeToShineH explains: "The first episode of Peacemaker Season 2 opens with 'Previously in the DCU.' It's mostly all Season 1 footage, but there are a couple of changes. Danielle Brooks' character now talks about calling in the Justice Gang, and they reshot the Justice League cameo from the finale. 'Now, it's Mister Terrific, Superman, [Guy Gardner], Hawkgirl, and Supergirl (all but [Green Lantern] and Hawkgirl are in shadow)." This would be an easy way to stay consistent with the groundwork that was laid in Superman . And we only have just over a week to see how it all pans out. Season 2 of Peacemaker kicks off on HBO/Max on August 21st.
