Violent clashes erupt in Libya's Tripoli amid reports about death of security chief
Local media reported that al-Kikli was killed inside the headquarters of the 444 Brigade, which is affiliated with the Tripoli Military Zone. At the same time, they noted, citing an unnamed security source, that "the reason for al-Kikli's presence inside the headquarters of the 444 Brigade is unknown."
The reports about al-Kikli's death coincided with residents of parts of southern Tripoli confirming hearing sounds of intense gunfire involving heavy weapons, as other areas of Tripoli are experiencing serious security tensions.
Over the past few hours, local media have circulated video footage of military mobilisations in and around Tripoli, noting that armed groups from the cities of Zawiya, Zintan, and Misurata were heading toward the capital.
The Medical Emergency Department of the Ministry of Health announced full alert following the clashes, while the Interior Ministry advised the residents of Tripoli to remain at home for their safety.
The Tripoli Mitiga International Airport announced suspending all flights and redirecting them toward the Misurata International Airport, which is located some 250 km east of Tripoli, while schools were suspended in some parts of Tripoli due to the clashes.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) called for de-escalation in Tripoli.
"UNSMIL is closely monitoring reports of the military build-up and escalating tensions in Tripoli and the broader western region. We urgently call on all parties to immediately deescalate the situation, refrain from any provocative actions, and resolve disputes through dialogue," UNSMIL said in a statement.
"The Mission strongly supports Libyan efforts, including those led by elders and community leaders, to achieve a peaceful resolution and emphasises the critical responsibility of all parties to protect civilians," the statement said.
Ever since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011, Libya has been plagued by insecurity and political instability.

FBI arrests key associate of Lawrence Bishnoi gang in US
Chandigarh, Aug14 (UNI) Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrested Randeep Singh, also known as Randeep Malik, a key associate of notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, in the United States. Malik, who is from Jind, Haryana, is accused of masterminding several high-profile crimes in India on Bishnoi's instructions while living abroad. He's currently being held at the Jackson Parish Correctional Center. The FBI has shared details of the arrest with Indian authorities, which could help dismantle the Bishnoi gang's operations. Malik is particularly wanted for his alleged role in the murder of Nadir Shah, a gym owner in Delhi's Greater Kailash-1 on September 12, 2024. According to a Delhi Police chargesheet, 'Malik allegedly arranged the supply of weapons from the US for the killing, which was planned by Lawrence Bishnoi via a video call with gangster Hashim Baba, who is lodged in Tihar Jail, while Bishnoi himself is incarcerated in Sabarmati Jail, Gujarat.' Additionally, Malik is implicated in orchestrating bomb blasts outside nightclubs in Chandigarh and Gurugram. On November 26, 2024, explosions targeted Seville Bar and Lounge, owned by singer Badshah, and De'Orra Club in Chandigarh's Sector-26. Similar attacks occurred on December 10, 2024, outside the Warehouse Club and Human Club in Gurugram's Sector-29. The responsibility for these attacks was claimed by Goldy Brar and Rohit Godara, associates of the Bishnoi gang. Investigations revealed that Malik coordinated these attacks by providing instructions to shooters named Vinay and Ajit via the Signal app and arranging the bombs. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against Malik, Goldy Brar, and others in connection with these bombings. His arrest marks a major breakthrough in the ongoing crackdown on the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, known for its involvement in extortion, murders, and other criminal activities across India. Former Ukrainian PM Nikolai Azarov urges ‘de-Nazification' of Ukraine
Moscow/Kyiv, Aug 14 (UNI) Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov has said that along with ending the Russia-Ukraine war, another major issue that needs to be addressed is the 'de-nazification' of Kyiv, calling it a "pressing matter." According to Azarov, no one has ever done anything on this track in Ukraine, while speaking to Russian state media TASS. "It is carried out by way of an accomplished fact on the battlefield. The Azov battalion (outlawed in Russia as a terrorist association) was eliminated - that's about all that has been done on the denazification track. Of course, this is a pressing topic," he said. A far right group in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the Azov Battalion has long been accused of being a 'neo-Nazi' militia, due to its use of symbols such as the 'Wolfsangel' rune, and making white supremacist and antisemitic comments during its early formation. The group's own history is of controversy, as its ties to a neo-Nazi ideology have polarised people, with some calling them Ukrainian nationalists, while others calling them an extremist group who wish to construct a Ukraine based on Nazi ideologies. According to Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov, Ukraine can be 'de Nazified', only after the end of the war, be it via military or diplomacy. At a high-level meeting with Russian foreign ministry officials in mid-June 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin outlined Moscow's preconditions for resolving the conflict. These included Ukraine withdrawing its forces from Donbass and Novorossia, abandoning aspirations to join NATO, and committing to a non-bloc, non-nuclear status. UNI ANV PRS
