Nine Chinese, Turkish firms invest $41.6m in Ismailia Free Zone, creating 16,000 jobs
Hossam Heiba, CEO of the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI), said the inflow of new investments reflects the success of the Egyptian government's efforts to create a competitive, investor-friendly environment that fosters manufacturing opportunities and provides employment for thousands of workers.
He noted that the new textile and garment projects will export 100% of their output, in line with the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade's 'Investment for Export' strategy. Production at the new factories is scheduled to begin in 2026.
Ayman Saleh, Head of the General Free Zone in Ismailia, reported that in 2024 the zone completed infrastructure development on 60 feddans designated for industrial use and allocated to investors. He added that work is under way to develop an additional 70 feddans in 2025 to meet strong demand for industrial investment in Egypt, particularly in the Suez Canal region.
Representatives of the Chinese and Turkish companies praised the streamlined investment procedures and favourable climate offered by GAFI. They also announced plans to relocate substantial portions of their production operations to Egypt, supporting GAFI's strategy to position the country as a leading hub for export and re-export in the Middle East.
The investors highlighted Egypt's strategic advantage in having preferential access to most major global markets through its extensive network of trade agreements.

Increased remittances and foreign investment inflows may also be contributing to a stronger Egyptian pound, as confidence in Egypt's fiscal reforms grows. 120 al-Shabaab Militants Killed in Operation in Somalia
Israa Farhan Somalia's Defense Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi has announced that more than 120 al-Shabaab militants were killed and several others wounded in large-scale military operations in the Lower Shabelle region in the country's south. Speaking at a press conference late Friday, Fiqi hailed the Somali National Army's success and vowed that the fight against terrorism would continue until the country is completely free of extremist threats. The operations were conducted by Somali troops in coordination with Ugandan Defense Forces, part of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). According to the Somali National News Agency (SONNA), the joint forces targeted key militant hideouts, capturing all major strongholds in the area. Government sources reported that troops are now conducting follow-up sweeps to collect weapons and recover the bodies of the militants killed in the offensive. The latest military success follows the strategic capture of the town of Barire in Lower Shabelle. Sisi, Turkish FM Discuss Ways to Strengthen Bilateral Relations, Regional Issues
Nada Mustafa President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received on Saturday Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hakan Fidan, in the presence of Dr. Badr Abdelatty, Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration, and Affairs of Egyptians Abroad. Presidential Spokesman Ambassador Mohamed El-Shenawy stated that the Turkish minister conveyed the greetings of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to President El-Sisi, who appreciated the gesture and stressed the importance of continuing efforts to enhance bilateral relations between the two countries. Sisi highlighted the qualitative progress in Egypt-Turkey relations, particularly following the signing of the Joint Declaration in February 2024 to reactivate the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council meetings and elevate them to the level of the two heads of state. Moreover, the meeting witnessed mutual affirmation on the need to strengthen economic cooperation between Egypt and Turkey, with the goal of achieving a trade volume of $15 billion, in line with the agreement reached during President El-Sisi's visit to Ankara in September 2024. The two sides also underscored the importance of expanding Turkish companies' participation in investment projects in Egypt. The meeting also addressed developments in several regional issues, foremost among them the situation in the Gaza Strip. Both sides reaffirmed their rejection of the re-establishment of military occupation in the Strip, stressed the need for an immediate ceasefire, the entry of humanitarian aid, and the release of hostages and detainees, while rejecting the displacement of Palestinians. In addition, the two leaders discussed the latest developments in Libya, Syria, and Sudan.
