5 charged after viral Cincinnati fight amid outcry from JD Vance, Elon Musk
A fight in downtown Cincinnati over the weekend resulted in five people facing charges, as well as outcry from local and federal officials after apparent videos from the incident circulated online.
Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge announced the charges against the five unidentified individuals during a news conference on Monday, July 28. Although only five people were charged, she said the fight involved "100 or so" individuals, adding that there were "well over 150,000 people" in the downtown area at the time for a Big3 basketball tournament, a Cincinnati Reds game and the Cincinnati Music Festival.
"This was a sudden dispute between individuals following a verbal altercation," Theetge said.
Alleged videos from the fight have been shared on social media, leading to criticism from politicians and media figures, including Vice President JD Vance, Vance's half-brother and mayoral candidate Cory Bowman and Elon Musk.
Here's what we know about the incident and the response from police.
Cory Bowman shares videos on Facebook
Bowman posted clips on his Facebook page that were allegedly from the fight.
In one of the videos, a group of people is seen striking a man until he falls to the ground as they continue to punch and kick him. Shortly after, another man is seen punching a woman in the face, causing her to fall to the ground, where she remained motionless until a person helped pick her back up.
"More violence from Friday night in downtown Cincinnati," Bowman wrote in a Facebook post on July 26. He also alleged that there was no "delegated dispatcher" on duty for the music festival at the time of the incident, which he wrote, "reinforces what we've known, that major problems exist in the (Emergency Communications Center) relating to crime in the city."
Police chief says response time was 'acceptable'
In response to criticisms of police response times, Theetge said that only one individual called the police. She added that the department received the initial call at 3:06 a.m., and the first officers arrived on the scene at 3:12 a.m.
"Based on body cam, that response time is completely acceptable," according to Theetge, who added that when officers arrived, "The majority of the participants were gone."
As of Tuesday, July 29, Theetge or police have not shared whether anyone was hospitalized due to the fight.
USA TODAY contacted Theetge and the police department on Tuesday, July 29, but did not receive an immediate response.
Elon Musk, JD Vance condemn the Cincinnati fight
While the fight is still being investigated, some political leaders have commented on videos of the alleged incident circulating online. Vance spoke about it on July 28 during a visit to Metallus, a steel manufacturer in Canton.
The vice president, who owns a home in Cincinnati, acknowledged he did not know the full story behind the video, but he said he watched it after Ohio Sen. Bernie Moreno shared it with him. He added that the instigators of the incident were "lawless thugs."
"How many of you all have wanted to go to downtown Akron or downtown Canton or downtown Columbus for a meal, but you're worried because the local authorities in these big cities have allowed lawlessness to run wild? We have got to make great American cities safe again for families and children," Vance said.
Musk commented on the fight after reposting an alleged video of the incident, which another user shared on X. The Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder wrote underneath the video, "That guy almost killed this woman. Aggravated assault."
City officials speak out against violence
Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval spoke out against the violence that transpired in his city over the weekend, saying in a statement, "I am outraged by the vicious fight that occurred Downtown."
"It is horrifying to watch, and this unacceptable and disgusting behavior is intolerable in any part of our community," the Democratic mayor's statement continued.
Pureval added that he's been in "consistent communication" with Theetge.
"Our police have been working around the clock to investigate and bring perpetrators of violence to justice," he said.
Theetge also voiced her disapproval of the fight during the news conference on Monday, saying, "I am in complete disgust waking up to the viral video many of you have now seen."
"The behavior displayed is nothing short of cruel and absolutely unacceptable ... Our investigative team is working diligently to identify every individual involved in causing harm," she added.

Mamdani preaches from pulpit of radical pastor pushing reparations, abolishing police: 'Brother and friend'
FIRST ON FOX: New York City socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani appeared at a church over the weekend led by a pastor with a history of controversial statements on race, anti-Israel ties, and who has issued support for reparations. "My profound thanks to Rev. Stephen A. Green and the Greater Allen AME for the honor of addressing their beautiful congregation in Jamaica, Queens this morning," Mamdani posted on X late Sunday. Mamdani spoke at the church for over 10 minutes and delivered a politically charged sermon that weaved in scripture in an attempt to justify his campaign platform. Near the end of his sermon, Mamdani said New York City and the United States are facing a "dark moment." He then called the Trump administration an "authoritarian government" and slammed ICE for "abduct[ing]" immigrants. "That is not justice. It is cruelty and it is criminal. These are our neighbors. These are people who are guilty of only wanting a field of their own to harvest," he continued. He went on to target the issue of affordability in New York City, an issue that has resonated with his supporters, and asked, "What good is New York City being the greatest city in the world if New Yorkers cannot afford to live here?" Green, who called Mamdani his "brother and friend," repeatedly said, "Amen" after the sermon and thanked him for attending. Like Mamdani, who has espoused several controversial political views, Green is no stranger to pushing his radical views on social media. In 2021, he called for a "new U.S. Constitution" on social media, saying that the country needs a document that "guarantees the right to vote, abolishes the electoral college, provides reparations for slavery, guarantees annual income, and so much more." In a 2022 Facebook post, Green, who calls himself a "global thought leader at the intersection of faith and social justice" and an "activist," called on President Biden to establish a commission on reparations because the "impact of slavery and its vestiges are felt in every aspect of life for Black people." "I was proud to be arrested at the DC Airport with my comrades to protect voting rights, DC Statehood, and reparations," Green said in a 2021 Facebook post that included a video of him being arrested. "We must continue to escalate our actions across the nation in order to protect voting rights. This is our revolutionary summer. Hold on, we must keep our eyes on the prize." "Trump's executive order is still entrenched in White Supremacist nationalism," Green posted on Facebook in June 2018. "We can not ease up on our pressure to abolish ICE and open our borders." In another Facebook post that year, Green insisted on "abolish[ing] the system of policing in this nation" and amplified a separate post accusing the system of policing in the United States as being anti-Black. One month after the October 7th Hamas attack on Israel, Green participated in a rally calling for a ceasefire. Pastor Jamal Bryant, who Fox News Digital previously reported has a long history of praising notorious antisemite Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, was one of the leaders at the rally. Bryant is the leading voice behind the recent boycott of Target where liberal activists urged the public not to shop at the retailer in response to the company's rollback of DEI guidelines. Green also led another rally the following February that was promoted as a "peace pilgrammage" for Gaza, saying, "We walked 150 miles to push the Biden administration to demand a ceasefire to protect the lives of all precious Palestinians and to pursue the beloved community." "The Black prophetic tradition calls me to do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with God as we speak out against genocide, occupation and war," he continued, appearing to take a shot against Israel. In recent weeks, Mamdani has faced an onslaught of attacks amid old interviews and past social media posts being unearthed, including several posts from 2020 and 2021 calling for defunding police. "We need a socialist city council to defund the police," Mamdani posted on X in July 2020. "Queer liberation means defund the police," Mamdani posted on X in November 2020. "Nature is healing," Mandani posted on X in response to a user mocking and laughing at seeing a police officer "crying inside his car." However, last week, in the wake of a Midtown Manhattan shooting that left a NYPD officer dead, Mamdani said his calls to defund the police were made out of "frustration" over George Floyd's death and appeared to distance himself from his past rhetoric. His comments left several in the community unconvinced that he had genuinely turned the page from antagonizing the police and with the belief that the walkback was politically driven as the city reels from the worst mass shooting in half a century. Fox News Digital reached out to the Mamdani campaign and Green for comment.

Suspect wanted in 'targeted' killings of 4 in Tennessee is captured after manhunt
A murder suspect wanted in connection with the "targeted" July deaths of four people in Tennessee after a baby was discovered abandoned in a person's front yard was captured after a multi-day manhunt. Austin Robert Drummond, 28, was taken into custody, police in Jackson, Tennessee, said Tuesday morning. U.S. Marshals captured him after he was sighted in the area Sunday evening, police said. Drummond, who was last seen on July 29, was wanted on four counts of first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, and gun charges in connection with the deaths of Matthew Wilson, 21; Adrianna Williams, 20; Cortney Rose, 38; and Braydon Williams, 15. Their bodies were found on July 29 in a wooded area near Tiptonville, north of Memphis, according to Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director David Rausch. Authorities have not said how they died or identified a possible motive. Speaking to reporters Friday, Rausch said the killings were not a random act of violence. 'It appears, with all the information that we have, that this was a targeted incident,' he said. The deceased were relatives of an infant who was found abandoned roughly 40 miles south of the wooded area in Tiptonville. The child was found in the front yard of a home after Drummond left the baby there and flagged people down to help, Rausch said. He called the move "a sign of compassion." Officials said Friday that the child was safe and being cared for. Wilson and Adrianna Williams were the infant's parents, according to Danny Goodman, the district attorney for Lake and Dyer counties. Rose was the grandmother, and Braydon was the maternal uncle, he said. A relative of the victims said that Drummond used to date a sister of Rose's. In a Facebook post, the relative said that Drummond had been close to their family. 'He has literally been nothing short of amazing to us and our kids every time he has been around us up until this point,' the post said. Drummond was previously convicted of aggravated robbery and served roughly a decade in prison. He was charged with attempted murder after his release last year and was out on bond at the time of the quadruple homicide, Goodman said. Three people described as associates of Drummond's have been arrested and accused of assisting him. Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation arrested Tanaka Brown, 29, on Friday, and Giovontie Thomas, 29, on Saturday. Brown and Thomas, both 29, have been charged with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder, the bureau said in a Saturday statement. Brown also faces one count of tampering with evidence. Dearrah Sanders was also charged with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder. She's accused of helping him after the murders, the bureau said in a news release.
