COOK COUNTY - A Palatine man has been arrested and charged in connection with a 2024 armed robbery at a hotel in Buffalo Grove, police announced on Friday.
What we know
Marco Vazquez, 28, was taken into custody without incident on Wednesday. He is accused of robbing the Extended Stay America hotel at 1525 Busch Parkway on Dec. 21, 2024.
According to the Buffalo Grove police, Vazquez jumped over the front desk counter and demanded money while showing a handgun.
He is now charged with one count of armed robbery, a Class X felony, and one count of aggravated robbery, a Class 1 felony.
What's next
Vazquez had his first court appearance Thursday at the Lake County Courthouse in Waukegan. Further details weren't shared.

Man charged with firing shotgun rounds into ceiling of North Fayette hotel room
A man was arrested and is facing charges, accused of firing several shotgun rounds into the ceiling of his hotel room in North Fayette Township. Levi Barela, 39, is facing several counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied structure, assault, and reckless endangerment after police said the shotgun rounds he fired inside the Extended Stay America on Tuesday led to the hotel being condemned. Police said they were first called to the Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa just before 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday for reports of a man with a gun inside the business. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man, later identified as Barela, who was armed with a loaded shotgun. Police said he handed the shotgun over without incident. Police said Barela admitted to firing five or six shotgun rounds into the ceiling of the room where he was living at the hotel because he believed there were federal agents "attempting to neutralize him." After firing the shots into the ceiling, Barela then reloaded the shotgun and went to the massage business, to tell his fiancé about what happened, police said. Police said the shotgun rounds Barela fired into the ceiling pierced the water lines throughout the hotel and resulted in the roof of rooms collapsing due to water damage. The hotel was condemned by North Fayette Township code enforcement due to the incident. Police say that Barela was taken to Western Psychiatric Hospital due to his mental status.

Center Line man accused in deadly Sterling Heights hotel shooting heads to trial
A Center Line man will stand trial for allegedly fatally shooting another man at a hotel and then leading police on a standoff for several hours in February, Macomb County prosecutors said. Luke Svacha, 51, is accused of shooting and killing Jajuan Marls, 24, at an Extended Stay America hotel in Sterling Heights on Feb. 1, 2025. Following the deadly shooting, authorities say Svacha left the hotel and returned to his Center Line home, where, after several hours of negotiations with police, he eventually dropped his firearm and was arrested. Svacha was charged with first-degree premeditated murder, felony firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and resisting and obstructing a police officer. During a preliminary examination on Wednesday, a judge bound Svacha over on all charges except the resisting and obstructing an officer charge because the judge did not find enough evidence to move forward on that charge, according to prosecutors. "Our priority is pursuing justice for the victim and protecting the safety of Macomb County. We will continue to move forward with this case to ensure accountability under the law," said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido in a statement. Svacha is scheduled to be arraigned on Aug. 4.

Police say the driver, Rosalba Ramirez-Fraga, was intoxicated, had open alcohol containers in her vehicle, and was driving the wrong way before the head-on collision. Ramirez-Fraga faces multiple charges, including two felony DUI counts, and remains in custody ahead of her Aug. 8 court date. PALATINE, Ill. - A suburban woman is facing felony DUI charges after a multi-vehicle crash in Palatine left a mother and her two young children hospitalized with serious injuries, police said. What we know The crash happened shortly after 10 p.m. Friday near East Dundee Road and North Kennedy Drive. Palatine police said officers arrived to find several damaged vehicles, including a black Lexus and a black Nissan that had collided head-on. A 23-year-old woman riding in the Nissan, along with her 7-year-old son and 1-year-old daughter, were taken to area hospitals with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. An investigation revealed the driver of the Lexus, Rosalba Ramirez-Fraga, 31, was traveling northbound on North Frontage Road when she rear-ended a gray Toyota. Police said she then continued into the westbound lanes of East Dundee Road while driving eastbound — ultimately crashing head-on into the Nissan. Officers said Ramirez-Fraga showed signs of impairment and admitted to drinking before the crash. Police also recovered several open containers of alcohol from her vehicle.
