100 spots ahead of I-Day: Police conduct checks across Delhi, flag security lapses
The Special Cell, Northeast Delhi, reported lapses at 16 locations, followed by 13 in East, 12 each in Shahdara and North, 11 in Central, 10 in Southeast, nine in South, eight in Metro, seven in Rohini, and six in Dwarka, they said. 'Multiple teams of the Special Cell undertook a five-day security inspection drive across various parts of Delhi in view of the high alert surrounding the upcoming national event,' said a source.
During the inspection, non-functional CCTV cameras in hotels, parkings, locations near metro stations, eateries at metro stations, several premises near railway stations, bus stands and many other installa-tions were flagged.
'The teams also inspected non-functional door frame metal detectors (DFMDs), security personnel de-ployment and improper maintenance of visitor records,' a source said.
Another officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the Special Cell will write letters to the DCPs of the concerned districts to improve security in their respective areas.
The inspection, conducted discreetly by trained teams of the Special Cell, was aimed at assessing the capital's preparedness to tackle any terror threats. It covered public places known to attract large crowds.
'Teams noticed a lack of functional DFMDs at various entry points. Several public places had either switched off their metal detectors, or they did not have power supply, or were not in working condi-tion,' said the officer.
At some places, CCTV cameras were poorly positioned. Several public places did not have adequate lighting during night hours.

The Delhi Police Wednesday found old cartridges and a circuit board during a routine check inside the Red Fort, amid heightened security days ahead of Independence Day. According to the Delhi Police, the cartridges, which appeared to be old, have been sent for forensic examination to determine their origin. The circuit board has also been sent for a check; however, prima facie, it seems it was used for lighting during some event at the Red Fort, a police officer said. In the run-up to the 79th Independence Day, the Delhi Police have stepped up the security arrangements at the Red Fort. Officers from the rank of deputy commissioners of police (DCPs) on senior deployment, a two-layered ring security system has been put in place, starting Sunday. Around 15,000 personnel of the Delhi Police will be deployed at the Red Fort and the surrounding precinct, officers said. Snipers, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) commandos, drones, and 700 AI-enabled CCTV cameras with facial recognition facility will also be a part of the security arrangements. On Saturday, the Special Cell team of Delhi Police managed to get inside the Red Fort's vicinity with a fake bomb — despite layers of security ahead of the Independence Day — during a mock drill to check the robustness of the arrangements. Seven police personnel stationed at the Red Fort at that time who could not intercept the dummy bomb were suspended for negligence, and a departmental inquiry was also initiated against them. Senior police officers said they would review all the security arrangements from scratch, and implement an improved and revised plan. The mock drill, which exposed the security lapse, was just one among the many that would be conducted in the run-up to the Independence Day gathering.

Passport case against Sushil Ansal: Court allows victims' body to aid prosecution
NEW DELHI: A Delhi court has permitted the Association of the Victims of Uphaar Tragedy (AVUT) to assist the prosecution in a fraud case involving businessman Sushil Ansal, convicted in the 1997 Uphaar cinema fire that killed 59 people. The order was passed by Chief Judicial Magistrate Shriya Agarwal on August 4, following an application filed by AVUT chairperson Neelam Krishnamoorthy, who raised concerns over the investigation and the filing of the chargesheet in the case. Ansal was booked by Delhi Police's crime branch in 2019 for allegedly suppressing information while seeking renewal of his passport. He was charged under Section 12 of the Passport Act and IPC sections 177 (furnishing false information), 181 (false statement on oath), 192 (fabricating false evidence), 197 (false certificate), and 420 (cheating). The case was registered based on directions from the Delhi High Court while hearing a writ petition filed by AVUT. 'The Association at the instance of which the law was set into motion in the present case ought to get a right of assisting the prosecution, to which there is no bar in law,' the judge said, adding that AVUT was free to aid the prosecution and that such assistance would not prejudice the accused. Senior advocate Vikas Pahwa noted that the case stemmed from a writ petition filed by AVUT, making a strong case for their active involvement. In its final report, police claimed that Ansal misled authorities under oath by declaring he had not been convicted in any criminal proceedings. The report added that he surrendered his passport on August 14, 2017, 'because he knew that adverse orders against him may well be passed'. Krishnamoorthy, who lost her two children in the fire, has continued to fight for justice on behalf of the victims for more than two decades.
