Mike Breen reveals the rare criteria behind his iconic 'bang!' call and what it takes to go triple
In an insightful conversation with Dan Patrick, the voice of the NBA Finals explained what it would take to elicit a never before heard triple "Bang!" a playoff buzzer beater so legendary that it requires a massive reaction.
As Tyrese Haliburton gets hot with clutch shots, Breen's criteria for his iconic call is straightforward, it must be truly monumental. And there's only one moment that meets that standard.
Mike Breen
says only a
game 7
finals
buzzer beater
can unlock the first ever
triple bang
Mike Breen, the renowned play-by-play announcer for ABC and ESPN, is globally recognized for his legendary "Bang!" call brief yet powerful used for those game winning three pointers. He's even done double bangs before, like when Stephen Curry hit that 38 foot shot in the 2015–16 season and Luka Doncic's buzzer beater in the NBA bubble, but a triple "Bang!"? That would require something truly extraordinary.
In his chat with Dan Patrick, Breen confessed that it would only happen naturally, as a spontaneous response to an incredible play, not something that's planned or rehearsed.
During a chat about Tyrese Haliburton who just nailed some clutch game winners back to back Patrick asked Breen if a buzzer beater in a Finals Game 7 for the title would deserve a triple "Bang!" Breen leaned closer and replied, "I have to do it in that case."
But he added a little twist: it's not only Haliburton, it could be anyone making that ideal shot, as long as it's a Game 7, Finals, buzzer beater.
Breen's iconic call traces back to his days at Fordham University. He would exclaim "Bang!" during college games to break through the crowd noise when a player hit a key shot. He mentioned to JJ Redick on The Old Man & The Three that this straightforward, sharp syllable turned into his hallmark, which he carried into high school, college, and eventually, pro broadcasts.
In the recent Finals, Breen was intentionally restrained. Following Tyrese Haliburton go ahead shot in Game 1 of the 2025 NBA Finals, he went with a simple "It's good, it's good" instead of his usual "Bang." He explained that he typically reserves "Bang" for three pointers and seldom uses it for two pointers, having only done so once before on a playoff game winner by Kobe Bryant.
Breen pointed out that none of his iconic calls like Steph Curry's double bang, Ray Allen's clutch Finals shot, or Luka Doncic's game winner were planned ahead of time.
They were all spontaneous, gut reactions that reflected the intense drama happening in the moment. A triple "Bang!" would need to surpass them all, matching Breen's own lofty standard: a buzzer beater three pointer in Game 7 of the NBA Finals to secure the championship.
In a league full of buzzer beaters, Mike Breen's iconic "Bang!" really stands out, it's sharp, electric, and well deserved. He's only repeated it once, and for a third time, we'd need a moment that's truly legendary.

Tyrese Haliburton's recent brilliance just adds to the excitement, but Breen's rule is clear: Game 7, NBA Finals, buzzer beater to clinch the championship. If that historic shot goes down, the third "Bang!" won't just echo it will resonate throughout basketball history.

Who is Scott Foster 'The Extender'? 5 decisions that made him controversy king
Who is Scott Foster 'The Extender'? 5 decisions that made him controversy king (Image Credit: Getty Images) Whenever Scott Foster steps on the court, it brings relief to the side that is lagging in the series. Coincidentally, the referee has been a part of all those games, where the lagging team got a lifeline. As a result, he earned the nickname, 'The Extender.' However, apart from being a lucky charm for the lagging side, he has come under the scanner on several instances where his decisions created controversy. Recently, Scott officiated Game 4 between the Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder. As expected, the Oklahoma City Thunder made a comeback and saved themselves another chance by evening the series 2-2. His decisions caused uproar among fans at various points during the crucial game, the most prominent one being Alex Caruso given a clean chit despite fouling on Tyrese Haliburton. Here are the top 5 controversial decisions given by Scott Foster, which drew angry fan reactions and also led the NBA to rescind them, at times. Chris Paul's ejection from Golden State Warriors in 2023 Chris Paul never denied having a beef against Scott Foster, and why wouldn't he? Paul's teams were 0-13 in the playoff losses, a streak that they finally broke in 2023. The same year, while playing against the Phoenix Suns, Chris Paul was controversially ejected from the Golden State Warriors by Scott. The decision did not go well among the fraternity, and the rumors swirled in NBA circles that there was money acting behind the call. Upheld controversial Aaron Gordon Foul in review in Denver Nuggets-Miami Heat 2023 Final Scott Foster was a part of the 2023 NBA Denver Nuggets-Miami Heat final as the replay center official. Though behind the screen, he continued to cause a stir among fans with his controversial calls. In one of the disputed fouls made by Aaron Gordon, he upheld the decision and stripped Jimmy Butler of a three-pointer. The decision sparked social media debate, where fans did not hold back their thoughts about Foster and his dubious calls. Jaylen Brown foul, later rescinded by NBA 2023 seemed to be a year full of Scott Foster horror for the NBA fans. He made the most controversial calls that year. One such decision was later rescinded by the NBA on the grounds of an erroneous decision. The foul in question is a technical foul given to Jaylen Brown in Game 7 between the Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers. Scott stuck to his decision despite the video showing that Brown just reacted to a push and didn't make an intentional contact. Brown later said to reporters, 'I don't know which way I should have responded to it. But if I didn't do anything, it probably would have played on. And here comes Scott Foster, right away before even deciphering the situation, gives me a tech.' The decision was later retracted by the NBA. Phantom Foul on Nikola Jokic in 2023 NBA Finals Game 4 Foster seemed unnecessarily aggressive towards Nikola Jokic during Game 4 of the 2023 NBA Finals. He called Jokic for a fifth foul. Interestingly, the contact was not at all conspicuous and could have easily been shrugged off. Scott went on to call it a technical foul, leading to a frenzy among fans. One Reddit user ranted on his handle: 'Scott Foster legitimately is crooked… one or two pieces of coincidental evidence may be bad luck… but Foster has a whole fucking book of coincidental evidence of rigging' The call reflected badly on Jokic's team Denver Nuggets, who had to send their star performer to the bench for a significant period. Rudy Gobert's technical foul followed by 'Money Sign' The peak of hate towards Scott Foster for his erroneous and inconsistent officiating was seen in 2024. In a game played in March 2024 between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Cleveland Cavaliers, Foster called Rudy Gobert for a foul. Gobert could not contain his resentment and responded with a 'money sign' alluding to Foster's probable involvement in betting. The reaction from Gobert cost him a $100,000 fine. He apologized later for the gesture and the loss it brought to the team. Also Read: Referee Scott Foster suffers bloody nose injuries early in Oklahoma City Thunder and Minnesota Timberwolves' Game 2 Scott Foster's inconsistent officiating has always been a pain for NBA fans. Whether he continues with his shenanigans in the coming time remains to be seen.

New York Knicks set to hold talks with Mike Brown, Taylor Jenkins for their head coach job: Report
The New York Knicks are in search of a new head coach and according to a report in ESPN, the team and the higher management are planning to hold talks with former Sacramento Kings coach Mike Brown and former Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins for their head coaching job. The same report states that the meeting is expected to be held next week. If the meetings go through next week, this will mark the first stage of formal interviews for the New York Knicks head coach post. It must be mentioned that this is not the first time that Brown has thrown his hat into the ring; he previously interviewed for the post in 2020. He also made a strong impression, but the New York Knicks eventually hired Tom Thibodeau. The Knicks' hunt for a new coach has not been going according to plan, as several other teams have already rebuffed them in their search. According to ESPN, the Dalles Mavericks rejected the Knicks' request to speak with their head coach, Jason Kidd, earlier this week. The team also asked to speak with Atlanta Hawks head coach Quin Snyder, but they were denied. It must be mentioned that the Knicks began the hunt for a new coach after firing Tom Thibodeau last week. This move surprised several fans after he had led the team to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 25 years. Both Mike Brown and Taylor Jenkins have solid resumes, so it's no surprise that the New York Knicks are interested in using their services. Brown was named the NBA Coach of the Year in his first season with the Sacramento Kings in 2022-23 after he helped the team end their longest playoff drought in NBA history at 16 seasons. He had a 107-88 record in his two-plus seasons with the team. However, he was fired midway through his third season. Brown had previously coached Cleveland and the Lakers. Overall, he has a 455-304 career record, making the playoffs in seven of his nine full seasons. Speaking of Jenkins, who was fired in March, had previously served as Grizzlies coach since 2019-20. The team made three postseason appearances with Jenkins, with one playoff series win.
