Patchwork, not repair: Bone-rattling ride on Shatabdi Square to Beltarodi
Nagpur: The road development project between Shatabdi Square and Beltarodi has become a serious hazard for daily commuters, with its incomplete, poorly maintained stretches posing a constant risk to life and property.
Despite being under construction for over a year, the route remains partially excavated and riddled with loose debris, causing widespread inconvenience and danger.
The concretisation work, undertaken by the state Public Works Department (PWD), covers the stretch between Shatabdi Square and the Manish Nagar T-point. While the portion near Manish Nagar T-point was completed promptly, the segment between Shatabdi Square and the Manish Nagar boys' hostel remains in limbo.
A visit by TOI on Thursday revealed that work is moving forward sporadically, with sections being dug and concreted in a piecemeal manner. Incomplete areas are left open without proper barricading or warning signage, creating perilous conditions for two-wheeler riders and pedestrians.
The road is a key arterial route, especially for traffic heading from Beltarodi, Besa, and Manish Nagar. In recent years, population growth in these areas has led to a surge in vehicular traffic, placing additional pressure on the already fragile infrastructure.
While motorists heading from Wardha Road have alternative routes such as Manish Nagar & Somalwada underpasses or the double-decker flyover, those coming from older parts of Nagpur rely heavily on this incomplete stretch.

Railway firm on parking fees, commuters cry foul
T'puram: Southern Railway is yet to roll back the steep increase in parking fees at railway stations in the Thiruvananthapuram division that was implemented from June 1. As per the new tariff rate, the two-wheeler parking for a month rose from Rs 360 to Rs 500. People are upset as the parking rates and season ticket rates together push up monthly commuting costs. "The new tariff has more than doubled the charges for parking, making it unaffordable for the common man," said Liyons J of Friends on Rails. "It has to be reconsidered," he added. Not all two-wheeler users are granted monthly passes and most stations only offer them to those parking for less than eight hours. Collection practices are arbitrary and some stations collect money without issuing proper receipts, he added. Passengers are also demanding CCTV surveillance in parking areas. Passengers alleged that the railway failed to provide any security for parked vehicles and also did not offer adequate facilities. Additionally, there is an extra charge for storing helmets and raincoats. Following a request from Friends on Rails officials, Kodikkunnil Suresh, MP, formally requested the Thiruvananthapuram divisional manager to review the revised rates. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2 & 3 BHK Homes Near Padur, OMR Starting @ ₹72.50 Lakh* TVS Emerald Undo A railway official said that the parking fees were decided after considering the feasibility. Akkulam glass bridge set to open after safety nod
T'puram: The glass bridge at Akkulam tourist village is set to open to the public, following a positive safety assessment by the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Kozhikode. The bridge which has been in the spotlight for its aesthetic appeal and engineering, is now in its final stages before inauguration. An expert team from NIT conducted a detailed evaluation of the bridge's design, materials and structural integrity last month. The team concluded the structure is safe and fit for public use, a significant reassurance after earlier safety concerns about the glass floor. "The bridge has met all required safety standards and we've received confirmation that it is safe for the public," said Binu Kuriakose, an official from the Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society (KATPS). "The govt will now finalise an inauguration date in consultation with senior officials and local representatives," he added. Part of a state initiative to boost tourism infrastructure, the bridge is expected to become a major attraction in Thiruvananthapuram. Spanning 52 metres across the scenic Akkulam backwaters, it offers panoramic views and a unique walking experience. The project was delayed by nearly a year due to design changes and mandatory safety clearances. Cracks found in the 12mm, three-layered glass panels led to a complete replacement and the addition of an extra glass layer based on state committee recommendations. The upgraded bridge now features multiple safety enhancements, along with an LED wall that simulates breaking glass for added thrill. Visitors can also enjoy artificial fog, mist and dynamic lighting effects. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
