Egypt strategic market for Uber in MENA with bold economic atmosphere: CEO to Ahram Online - Markets & Companies

Al-Ahram Weekly20-02-2025
Egypt is a strategic and core market for Uber in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region with a bold economic atmosphere, Youssef Abouseif, the company's general manager for Egypt, KSA, and Bahrain, told Ahram Online (AO).
Abouseif said this on the sidelines of the conference Uber held Thursday in Cairo to present the report showcasing its economic impact in Egypt, marking a decade of operating in the country.
He told AO that the ride-hailing company plans to expand locally by launching its services in more governorates nationwide.
When asked about the digital infrastructure essential for Uber's operation in the country, Abouseif said: "Egypt has several robust potentials that support Uber operations."
He noted that Monorail Egypt, currently under construction, has great potential for Uber as a ride-hailing app. It will connect public and smart transport providers and help the country's public and private sectors.
Uber Egypt released its first-ever Economic Impact Report during the conference, highlighting its role in boosting Egypt's economy, empowering Egyptians with economic opportunities, and enhancing mobility.
The report also revealed that Uber contributed an estimated EGP 7.4 billion to Egypt's economy.
Moreover, it underscored the platform's impact on tourism, adding EGP 3.1 billion to the sector's revenues and demonstrating its tangible benefits for riders and partner drivers.
The report, commissioned by Uber and conducted by Public First, also outlined the ride-hailing company's economic impact on local businesses, drivers, and riders in 2023.
'This report demonstrates the power of technology in transforming mobility and creating economic opportunities in Egypt,' Abouseif emphasized.
'Over the past decade, Uber has provided thousands of drivers with flexible earning opportunities and brought innovative solutions to help people access modes of transport that are safe, reliable, and convenient. As we look ahead, we remain committed to working with policymakers and industry players to further unlock the potential of the ride-hailing sector,' he added.
Abouseif also revealed that drivers on the app are making EGP 1.8 billion in additional earnings annually.
'By offering opportunities that cater to those with caregiving responsibilities, 73 percent of drivers cited that it enabled them to balance work, family, and personal growth. Moreover, 64 percent reported that Uber helped them earn money in emergency situations, while 47 percent said their earnings through Uber made them feel more financially secure,' the report read.
Additionally, the app's features, such as upfront pricing and GPS tracking, improve safety and ease of travel, making Egypt more accessible to global tourists exploring historic landmarks and coastal destinations.
According to the report, Uber supported EGP 710 million in value for the leisure economy by enabling safe late-night travel, boosting hospitality, entertainment, and leisure venues, and strengthening economic activity in these sectors.
The report also indicated that the Uber app saved riders 8.4 million hours annually or 59 years, enhancing efficiency and convenience.
It showed that 70 percent of riders used Uber in emergency situations, while 48 percent relied on it to connect with public transport.
The report added that 72 percent of riders used Uber for work commutes, 60 percent for airport rides, and 61 percent for social events.

Egypt's furniture exports expected to hit $350m by year-end: Wood chamber

Alaa Nasr El-Din, Board Member of the Wood Working and Furniture Chamber at the Federation of Egyptian Industries, affirmed that Egypt's furniture industry is undergoing a significant technological transformation, driven by advanced manufacturing techniques and the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI). Nasr El-Din projected that sector exports will surpass $350m by the end of 2025, supported by strong performance in the first half of the year, which recorded $200m in exports. This figure already represents a marked improvement compared to total exports of $331m in 2024. He urged the government to intensify efforts to support the development of the furniture sector and expand its role as a vital industry employing millions of Egyptians. Strengthening the industry, he said, ultimately benefits both citizens and the national economy. Highlighting the impact of AI, Nasr El-Din explained that AI-powered tools are providing new opportunities for designers, with algorithms capable of analysing global design trends, generating creative ideas, and offering tailored suggestions to meet consumer preferences. He noted that what was once seen as imaginative has now become an integral part of the modern furniture industry, fuelling innovation and competitiveness. Nasr El-Din stressed that significant opportunities exist to boost Egyptian furniture exports to international markets—particularly the United States and Europe—by improving productivity, increasing value-added in manufacturing, and enhancing design quality to match diverse consumer tastes at home and abroad.

CBE's net foreign assets climb to $10.5bn in July 2025

The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) announced that its net foreign assets (NFA) rose to $10.491bn (EGP 511.211bn) in July 2025, up from $10.1bn (EGP 499.628bn) in June. Net foreign assets at the CBE are widely viewed as a key indicator of banking sector stability and resilience, representing the balance between the Bank's foreign currency assets and its liabilities. Following the fourth wave of currency liberalisation in March 2024, the consolidated net foreign assets position of Egyptian banks—including the CBE—moved into surplus by about $14.29bn in May 2024. This marked a sharp turnaround from a deficit of nearly $29bn in January 2024, prior to the CBE's reform measures and the foreign inflows linked to the Ras El Hekma development deal. Separately, a CBE report revealed that reserve money expanded to EGP 2.516trn in July 2025, compared with EGP 2.320trn in June. The Bank noted that currency in circulation outside its vaults stood at EGP 1.516trn in July, slightly up from EGP 1.507trn a month earlier. Meanwhile, local currency deposits held by banks with the CBE surged to EGP 999.950bn in July, from EGP 813.817bn in June.

Trump Demands Fed Governor Lisa Cook Resign

Taarek Refaat Former U.S. President Donald Trump has escalated his ongoing criticism of the Federal Reserve, calling on Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook to resign. The demand, made Wednesday via his social media platform Truth Social, intensifies political pressure on the central bank as it continues to face scrutiny over interest rate policy and internal oversight. 'Cook should resign now,' Trump wrote, sharing a Bloomberg report referencing calls for increased scrutiny over two controversial mortgage files associated with Cook. Trump's latest comments follow repeated criticisms of Fed Chair Jerome Powell, whom he has lambasted for not cutting interest rates aggressively enough. Trump has previously labeled Powell 'an idiot' and 'stupid,' claiming the Fed's cautious stance on monetary easing is damaging the U.S. economy amid ongoing tariff-driven inflationary pressures. The former president also once suggested that the cost of renovating the Federal Reserve's headquarters could justify Powell's removal, though he later backtracked on that position. Trump's call for Cook's resignation was echoed by Bill Bolt, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency and a close Trump ally. Bolt reportedly sent a letter to the U.S. Attorney General urging a federal investigation into Cook's mortgage dealings, hinting at potential criminal conduct. It remains unclear whether the Justice Department will act on this request. Appointed to the Fed's Board of Governors in May 2022, Lisa Cook was reappointed in September 2023 for a term that runs through 2038. A former member of President Barack Obama's Council of Economic Advisers, Cook has become a political target for Trump and other Republican figures who often criticize officials tied to Democratic administrations. Cook is also known for her more cautious stance on monetary easing. Recently, she dismissed the idea of a 50-basis-point rate cut in September, another point of contention for Trump and his economic allies, who are calling for steeper and faster rate reductions. With Powell's term as Fed Chair set to expire in May 2026, Trump's intensified attacks may foreshadow a broader campaign to reshape the central bank's leadership if he returns to the White House. Analysts warn that political interference in Fed policy could undermine the institution's independence at a critical time for the global economy. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt News The Jessica Radcliffe Orca Attack? 100% Fake and AI-Generated
