BCCI Receives Big 'Jasprit Bumrah' Advice: "Prepare Him For Surgical Strikes..."

NDTV6 days ago
Former Team India strength and conditioning coach Soham Desai said that star pacer Jasprit Bumrah should be handled smartly and given the concerns over his fitness, he should be used for periodic 'surgical strikes'. In the recent past, there has been a lot of chatter surrounding Bumrah's workload management and ahead of the Test series against England, the BCCI made it clear that he will not be playing all five matches. In an interview with Indian Express, Desai said that there should be a small team that handles Bumrah's fitness and even advised the BCCI to be 'smart' while handling the star pacer.
"Bumrah is an asset and needs to be handled smartly. A small team needs to handle him, prepare him for surgical strikes a few times a year and be smart around him at other times. I have been with him since 2014, when he was on RTP from his ACL injury, from his Gujarat Ranji Trophy days."
"He is special, a gifted guy who has worked immensely to become one of a kind. To manage guys like him we need a cohesive, collective and collaborative approach with a long-term vision driving the decisions, and ideally with great consistency in personnel around him," he added.
Meanwhile, Anil Kumble weighed in on the importance of Jasprit Bumrah's availability for the remainder of the Test series as the visitors are trailing 1-2 in the ongoing five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
Speaking on 'Follow The Blues', JioHotstar expert Anil Kumble said, "I would certainly push for Bumrah to play the next game because that's crucial. If he doesn't play and India end up losing the Test, that's it, the series would be done and dusted. Bumrah should feature in both the remaining Tests. Yes, he mentioned earlier that he would only play three matches, but there is a long break after this. He does not need to be part of the home series if he wants rest. But right now, Bumrah should be playing the next two."

How Many Tests Does Joe Root Need To Beat Sachin Tendulkar's Most Runs Record?

Joe Root has surpassed Dravid, Kallis, and Ponting to become the second-highest run-scorer in Test cricket. How many Tests does he need to go past Sachin Tendulkar? Joe Root is on a record-breaking spree and the biggest record left for him is India great Sachin Tendulkar's for most runs ever in Test cricket — 15,921. On Friday (July 25), he became the second-highest run-scorer in the format with 13380 runs, going past Rahul Dravid (13288), Jaques Kallis (13289), and Ricky Ponting (13378) in the same innings of 121* (201), at Tea in the fourth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test at Old Trafford. The question begs itself — can Root be the one to break Tendulkar's currently 12-year-old record, which many thought would never be touched, which Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson and several other greats couldn't come even close to? If he can, how many Tests would he need to do so and etch him at the top of the world? It's difficult to say exactly, but Root has averaged 89 since the start of 2024, and according to CricViz (a sports analytics company), if he maintains that rate, he will need only 29 more Tests to pass Tendulkar and become the format's leading run scorer. Considering England play at least a dozen Tests every year (they played 17 in 2024), he'd need about two and a half years to reach the feat. To put how quick Root is in context, the 17 Tests in 2024 yielded 1556 runs for him. Of course, this is the best-case scenario. Apart from the difficulty of maintaining a purple patch like this for that significant period, Root would also need to keep himself fit. He's 34 and will turn 35 this December, and though he's fit, it'll become progressively arduous for him to maintain fitness, just like Tendulkar, Kallis, and Ponting also faced. However, Tendulkar played 200 Tests, and Ponting 168, while Root is still at 157. Ponting's prediction for Root's records Earlier in the day, Ponting had tipped Root to break his record. He was also asked about the Englishman's chances of going past Tendulkar. 'There's still a fair bit to go," Ponting told ICC. 'What is he, 35? Doesn't look like his passion for the game is going anywhere. His run-scoring passion has probably gone up over the years. Can he chase down Sachin? Let's see. He might as well do that," he added. Root strikes 38th Test hundred as England pile misery on India

Manchester, Jul 25 (PTI) Joe Root racked up his 38th hundred as England extended their dominance over India by reaching 433 for four at tea on day three of the fourth Test here on Friday. Washington Sundar got the ball to drift and got rid of Ollie Pope (71 off 128 balls) and Harry Brook (3 off 12) after lunch, providing a much needed relief for India after a wicketless morning session. Root (121 batting off 201), however, continued to pile on the runs and reached three figures with a four down the leg side off Anshul Kamboj, laying the foundation for the hosts' 75 runs lead. Minutes later he also surpassed Ricky Ponting to become the second highest run-scorer in Tests, leaving him only behind Sachin Tendulkar, who amassed 15921 runs. India employed spinners Washington and Ravindra Jadeja from both ends despite taking the new ball. The move worked as Sundar had Pope caught at first slip before having Brook stumped as he could not connect on the charge. Root chose to play on the backfoot when the spinners were in operation and used the reverse sweep effectively. Towards the end of the session, Root took a single off Kamboj to get past the great Ponting in the all time leading run getters list. England captain Ben Stokes (36 batting off 68) chugged along at the other end as he and Root shared an unbeaten 84-run alliance for the fifth wicket. Bumrah bowling just one over with the new ball before leaving the field added to India's woes. When he finally returned to bowl, the umpires reminded him that he was only allowed to bowl post tea. In the morning session, the Indian bowlers did not pose enough threat for the seasoned Root and Ollie Pope who steered England to 332 for two at lunch. After a forgettable evening session on day two, the Indian bowling attack once again failed to make inroads into the England batting. Besides an odd ball keeping low from the James Anderson end and another jumping from the opposite side, Bumrah and Co did not trouble Root and Pope. Guilty of offering too many freebies on the leg side on Thursday, the Indian pacers continued to offer loose balls to release pressure on the opposition. Bumrah bowled a full ball into Root's pads to start his day and the England veteran duly flicked it for a four. Later in his spell, Pope and Root were quick to pull Bumrah for a boundary each when the Indian pace spearhead pitched it short. Resuming the day at 225 for two, England eased to 266 for two in the first hour of play. Kamboj, who had an underwhelming start to his Test career on day two, created a chance in his opening spell but Dhruv Jurel could not hold on to a tough chance. Pope was 48 at the time. Washington was introduced as late as the 69th over and Root put him under pressure straightaway by reverse sweeping him for a boundary. 'Macha! I Need Some English Here': Yashasvi Jaiswal's Epic Sledge On Stump Mic

While the chips were down in first session, opening batter Yashavi Jaiswal tried lifting his team's spirit. It turned out to be a tiring day for the Indian bowlers as England put on a great batting show on display. Former captain Joe Root led the charge with his 38 th Test hundred and becoming the third-highest run scorer in Test cricket. The hosts also went on to take a first-innings lead, making batting look easy on the Old Trafford surface. The Indian camp had a different story to tell. The pacers kept toiling hard in the opening session but failed to pick a single wicket. England added 107 runs before heading for the lunch break on the third day of the ongoing fourth Test. While the chips were down, opening batter Yashavi Jaiswal tried lifting his team's spirit. As heard over the stump mic, Jasiwal said, 'Come on, guys, let's go." He then moved on to Sai Sudharsan, asking him to sledge in English. 'Macha! I need some English here. I want to hear some English from you, come on," Jaiswal said. But the hosts bounced back again in no time with skipper Ben Stokes backing Root, who was on a record-shattering spree. At the stroke of tea, Root surpassed former Australia captain Ricky Ponting to become the second-highest run scorer in Test cricket, only behind legendary Sachin Tendulkar. The 34-year-old, appearing in his 157th Test, went past Ponting's tally of 13,378 runs with a single on the offside as the crowd stood to applaud him and chanted 'Roooot". Minutes later, England reached tea on the third day at 433-4 in reply to India's first-innings score of 358. India's Sachin Tendulkar is safe in top spot for now, having scored a mammoth 15,921 runs in 200 Tests, but Root has time on his side. England are 2-1 up in the series, with the final Test at the Oval starting next week.
