Coastal Carolina uses 3-run 8th inning to beat Arizona 7-4 in CWS opener, extend streak to 24 games
The Chanticleers (54-11) extended their winning streak to 24 games in their first appearance in Omaha since they beat Arizona in the 2016 finals. They'll play Sunday against the winner of Friday night's game between Louisville and No. 8 national seed Oregon State.
Arizona (44-20), in the CWS for the first time since 2021, will play the Louisville-Oregon State loser on Sunday.
Coastal Carolina scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to forge a 4-all tie with the Wildcats and took the lead in the eighth after reliever Garrett Hicks (5-1) retired the first two batters.
Wells Skyes sliced a ball just inside the right-field line for a double and Caden Bodine was intentionally walked before Sebastian Alexander singled in the go-ahead run. Arizona closer Tony Pluta came on and gave up Blake Barthol's two-run double.
The Wildcats had runners on the corners with none out in the ninth. Carbone struck out pinch-hitter Dom Rodriguez and then got Brendan Summerhill to hit into a game-ending double play.
The Chanticleers of the Sun Belt Conference arrived with the most wins and on the longest winning streak ever entering a CWS.
Gary Gilmore, who coached the 2016 national championship team and retired after last season, accepted Coastal Carolina coach Kevin Schnall's invitation to fly with the team to Omaha. He watched the game from the stands.
Chanticleers reliever Cameron Flukey (8-1) went four innings in relief of Riley Eikhoff and allowed two runs on two hits and a walk.
Coastal Carolina finished with 14 hits against four pitchers. Blagen Pado, who entered the NCAA Tournament batting .225, continued his postseason tear. He went 2 for 4 and is now 10 of 21 (.476) with three homers and eight RBIs over six tournament games.
Arizona's Mason White hit his 20th homer of the season, and 49th of his career, in the fourth inning, with Alexander leaping at the left-field fence and having the ball soar just over his outstretched glove.
The Wildcats' Owen Kramkowski, coming off his worst start of the season in an 18-2 loss at North Carolina in Game 1 of super regionals, scattered nine singles and a walk while giving up three runs in five innings. He struck out seven.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Ketel Marte went deep for the Arizona lead with two outs in the ninth inning again against the Texas Rangers. The big swing this time came from the other side of the plate. Martel's three-run homer batting left-handed capped a two-out rally in the ninth inning for the Diamondbacks in their series finale at Texas on Wednesday, a 6-4 win that came less than 24 hours after the switch-hitter's upper-deck solo shot from the right side in the final at-bat for a 3-2 victory. 'He's one of a kind. He's just a special player. When his timing's right and his body's right, he's capable of carrying a ball club,' manager Torey Lovullo said after the All-Star second baseman's latest game-winner. 'And it was a great moment for him. The smile on his face as he was rounding the bases is something that I know we all enjoyed.' The 413-foot homer to right was Marte's fourth hit Wednesday. His first three hits were singles, one driving in their first run, off former teammate Merrill Kelly, who made his third start for the Rangers since they acquired him from Arizona at the trade deadline two weeks ago. 'What you saw today is him in a nutshell. He hits good pitches, he hits bad pitches,' said Kelly, who exited the game after six innings with a 3-2 lead. ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Ketel Marte's solo home run to deep left field with two out in the ninth inning gave the Arizona Diamondbacks a 3-2 win over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night. Marte's homer off Danny Coulombe (2-1) followed consecutive strikeouts of Jose Herrera and Geraldo Perdomo. Perdomo's was the fifth looking for Arizona among 11 strikeouts, after which manager Torey Lovullo protested and was ejected by home plate umpire Nate Tomlinson. Attorney: Lady Vols guard Ruby Whitehorn will plead not guilty at preliminary hearing
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The attorney for Ruby Whitehorn says the Tennessee guard will plead not guilty when arraigned on felony charges of domestic assault and aggravated burglary. 'She is, in fact, not guilty,' attorney Gregory P. Isaacs said in a statement. 'Our firm's investigation has also revealed that the factual allegations contained in the warrants are not accurate and are contradicted by eyewitness accounts. Ruby Whitehorn looks forward to having this matter resolved in the very near future.' Whitehorn's preliminary hearing scheduled for Tuesday was rescheduled for Sept. 5. The 6-foot guard from Detroit, Michigan, was arrested Aug. 8 after the Knox County Sherriff's Office responded to a call around 4:15 p.m. According to reports, police said Whitehorn got into an altercation outside a woman's residence and kicked in a front door and bedroom door. Whitehorn reportedly told officers she was getting her property back after the woman took her phone and passport, then locked the door. Tennessee issued a statement Sunday saying officials were aware of the situation and gathering information. Whitehorn started 28 of 34 games last season for the Lady Vols and ranked fourth scoring 11.6 points a game shooting 46.3%. She also had four rebounds per game. She started her career at Clemson where she started 62 of the 66 games she played. She helped Tennessee go 24-10 in coach Kim Caldwell's debut season.
