Lee Carsley urges England Under-21s to handle the ‘biggest moments' in Euros bid

Having opened their title defence with a 3-1 win over the Czech Republic, England were then left frustrated by being held to a goalless draw by Slovenia on Sunday.
Germany, meanwhile, have already made sure of progress to the last eight with two victories and would finish top of Group B if they avoid defeat to England in Nitra on Wednesday night.
Carsley hinted he could again freshen up the side, but is confident all of his players have the needed mindset to get at least the point required to book a quarter-final spot against either Spain or Italy.
'We all know what the game is about and how much weight it carries, so we try and remove a bit of that for the players, but they have looked very focused,' Carsley told a press conference.
'We talk about the players having personality on the ball and getting the ball, because it is really important that in the biggest moments of the biggest games, that is what we are trying to prepare these players for.
'(For them) to hopefully go on and have senior careers, then they have got to be able to handle these kind of experiences and situations, so I feel we are capable of that.'
"The objective is to qualify from the group, and we're on course to do that." 🙌
Reaction to yesterday's #YoungLions draw at the #U21EURO from Lee Carsley, James McAtee and James Beadle:

Carsley added: 'We still want to win the group, so that's the challenge that we set the players.
'We have shown in patches that we have been good, but we can definitely be better.
'The chances that we have created, but then didn't take (against Slovenia) is disappointing.
'Maybe if we had come off that game scoring a couple of goals, then we would probably have a different feeling, but I am sure that there is a lot more goals in this team.'

Having beaten Slovenia 3-0 in their opening group game – in which Stuttgart forward Nick Woltemade scored a hat-trick – Germany then again impressed with a 4-2 win over the Czechs.
'They are very well organised and have got some very strong players physically,' Carsley said.
'They are probably a little bit more direct than what we are used to watching from German teams that have gone on in the past, but they are really effective with what they do.'
Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, who has started both group matches so far, feels England can step up the challenge.

'We have got to go out there and perform. It is a big game for us,' Anderson, 22, said.
'It is all about trying to get through the group now.
'We have got so much quality in the team and is about showing it on the pitch, so it is about being brave and able to express yourself.'

Luke Littler and Luke Humphries 'let their country down and don't deserve MBEs'

Former world champion Dennis Priestley has accused Luke Littler and Luke Humphries of 'letting their country down' during the World Cup of Darts. Littler and Humphries, the current and former world champions, suffered a shock defeat to hosts Germany in the last-16 stage. England were 'massive favourites' going into the tournament, with Littler and Humphries meeting in last month's Premier League Darts final. But they appeared to struggle to deal with a partisan crowd in Frankfurt and lost 8-4 to the German pair of Martin Schindler and Ricardo Pietreczko. Priestley was hugely disappointed by England's performance at the World Cup and 'heard' the pair were not practising together before the tournament. 'Luke Littler and Luke Humphries let their country down at the World Cup of Darts,' he told OLBG. 'From what we've heard they weren't sitting together or practising together. 'When I was playing in pairs with Phil Taylor we practised together and sat together, we played all over the world and I only remember us getting beaten once. 'If you go on and win the tournament without practising then it doesn't matter, but when you go out without winning a game as the big favourites, it's not a good look. 'Having said that, I think they will learn from the experience and come back stronger. Don't be surprised to see them lifting the trophy next year.' Popular darts pundit Wayne Mardle felt Littler and Humphries 'buckled under the pressure' of being the overwhelming favourites for the World Cup of Darts. 'Luke and Luke, no doubt, were feeling the stresses and strains of being massive favourites,' the four-time world championship semi-finalist told Sky Sports. 'The pressure got to them at some point and they buckled. Their opponents didn't, and full credit to Martin and Ricardo there.' Former World Cup of Darts winner Damon Heta added: 'They probably relied on each other, thinking 'Oh, he'll do the business'. 'But the conditions weren't great. The crowd was all for Germany so it was probably brutal out there for them, but they will take it as another learning curve and probably get stronger – unfortunately for the rest of us. 'Fair play to Germany, they played good darts, but we are just worried about us and what we have got to do.' Littler and Humphries poor display at the World Cup came less than 24 hours after both became MBEs in the King's Birthday Honour. 'This is an amazing and unexpected honour but one which I am very grateful for,' said Littler, who became the youngest world darts champion in history at the start of 2025. 'To receive a recognition like this is something I had never thought would be possible, and it is a proud moment. 'It's unbelievable what I've done for my sport; I'm happy, my family is happy and I can't wait to receive it.' Humphries, meanwhile, added: 'Everyone's talking about darts now, and I think that we're two of the pioneering parts of that. 'We've changed the face of darts over the last couple of years. It's starting to become a younger man's game. It's nice to be at the forefront of that.' Priestley believes it was 'very early' for Littler, 18, and Humphries, 30, to be handed the accolades. 'To be brutally honest, I don't think either Luke Littler or Luke Humphries have done enough to earn their MBEs just yet,' the 74-year-old added. NORTHERN IRELAND ARE THE WORLD CUP CHAMPIONS 🏆It's simply incredible… Northern Ireland win one of the greatest World Cup Finals ever, beating Wales 10-9!Josh Rock and Daryl Gurney are the 2025 @BetVictor World Cup Champions! 🙌 — PDC Darts (@OfficialPDC) June 15, 2025 'I think in time they could've done enough to warrant it but it feels very early, they have both won one World Championship each and are still young in their careers. 'Littler has been recognised for raising the popularity of darts which is great, but he can still do so much more. 'If he is getting an MBE this soon then you'd have to think he is on the right path to a knighthood, nothing would surprise me now.' England's World Cup conquerors Germany beat Australia in the quarter-finals before losing 8-1 to Northern Ireland in a one-sided semi-final. The Northern Irish team of Daryl Gurney and Josh Rock then beat two-time champions Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton of Wales 10-9 in a thrilling final. More Trending 'Me and Daryl said when we team up for the World Cup, we'll win it and we did,' said Rock, 24. 'We've won for our country, we've made history.' Gurney, 39, added: 'Josh's power scoring was amazing and I was there to clean up the finishing. I've never been so proud of this man and myself. The prize for winning the World Cup of Darts, which was established in 2010 and now happens annually, was £80,000. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Liverpool to pay Florian Wirtz's parents eye-watering fee in £116m transfer deal

Florian Wirtz is set to join Liverpool in a record £116million deal as the Reds strengthen their squad as they attempt to retain their Premier League title in Arne Slot's second season Liverpool are set to cough up £8.55million to Florian Wirtz's parents as they move towards cementing the blockbuster signing. The German international is expected to soon complete a transfer to Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen. Wirtz is set to sign a contract with the Reds until 2030 as Liverpool complete a British record transfer. Arne Slot's side are stumping up £116million including add-ons and the 22-year-old will become the club's second highest paid player, behind Mohamed Salah. ‌ But, with a medical expected to take place later this week, Wirtz will not be the only member of his family to benefit. The Leverkusen star has seen his career managed by his parents rather than an agency. ‌ Wirtz's parents Hans and Karin have joined him when he travelled to England last month, and have negotiated on his behalf. And they will take a healthy cut in the deal as a result for their role. Sport Bild, per Sport Witness, claim they will see €10m (£8.55m) over the course of their son's contract with Liverpool. Wirtz is set to undergo his medical on Friday after taking a quick holiday following his time on international duty for Germany in the UEFA Nations League. The playmaker will follow in the footsteps of Liverpool signing Jeremie Frimpong in making the move, and shared a picture of the duo on a boat. It's been a busy summer to so far at Anfield with the club having said goodbye to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Caoimhin Kelleher. Wirtz's signing is set to be followed by the arrival of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth. Talks between Liverpool and Bournemouth continue with the Cherries having already added left-sided defender Adrien Truffert from Rennes in a £14.5m deal. Arne Slot hinted at the end of the season that the Reds would be looking to move quickly. "We just want good players and ideally you sign them as soon as you can," he said. ‌ "But it's not always easy to sign good players, let alone to sign them early in the window. But this club doesn't start working from today onwards. "There is so much hard work being done behind the scenes already this season to find out which targets we have and try to sign them. I have all the confidence that if we've addressed the right player that we try to sign that player." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
