A senior engineer at OpenAI who recently resigned after his year-long stint at OpenAI wrote a long-winding blog post, reflecting on his experience at the ChatGPT maker, acknowledging its fast growth and internal chaos in the past year. Calvin French-Owen was an engineer working on OpenAI's coding agent Codex . There was no drama in his exit, he stated, clarifying that he wanted to return to startup founding . He has impressive credentials as a founder, having cofounded Segment, a customer data platform that was acquired by Twilio in 2020 for $3.2 billion."The first thing to know about OpenAI is how quickly it's grown. When I joined, the company was a little over 1,000 people. One year later, it is over 3,000, and I was in the top 30% by tenure," his post read.French-Owen said anything that has scaled that quickly is bound to break, including "how to communicate as a company, the reporting structures, how to ship product, how to manage and organise people and the hiring processes."Everything runs on Slack; there are no emails at the AI powerhouse. OpenAI is very "bottoms-up", especially in research, he said, which makes it very meritocratic. Good ideas can come from anywhere, and promotions are handed to those who have demonstrated the ability "to have good ideas and then execute upon them."Since the ChatGPT maker has been in the news a lot, it is very secretive, French-Owen said. "I'd regularly see news stories broken in the press that hadn't yet been announced internally. I'd tell people I work at OpenAI and be met with a pre-formed opinion on the company. A number of Twitter users run automated bots which check to see if there are new feature launches coming up," he said.OpenAI has been under fire for its shifting priorities related to the safety of the technology, but he says safety is actually "more of a thing than you might guess".He said many people are working to develop safety systems, even as there is more focus on practical risks (hate speech, abuse, manipulating political biases, crafting bioweapons, self-harm, prompt injection) than theoretical ones (intelligence explosion, power-seeking).French-Owen's departure comes after a series of talent outflows at OpenAI. Cofounders like John Schulman left to join rival Anthropic, and others like Jan Leike cited disagreements about "the company's core priorities."Former CEO Mira Murati 's Thinking Machines Lab has recently raised $2 billion in a seed funding round, valuing the six-month-old venture at $10 billion.

FM tables IBC amendment bill to speed up insolvency cases

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman speaks in Lok Sabha during the Monsoon Session of Parliament, in New Delhi on Tuesday. (Sansad TV/ANI Video Grab) NEW DELHI: Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday introduced amendments to the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), aimed at making the law more effective and speed up the process, while proposing an out-of-court mechanism to address genuine business failures, domestic group insolvency and cross-border insolvency frameworks. The bill, which has been in the pipeline for over a year, was referred to a select committee, which will submit its report in the next session of Parliament. "Once implemented, this will help ease the burden on judicial systems, promote ease of doing business and improve access to credit," Sitharaman said. With cases taking 434 days to be admitted against the mandated 14 days, the bill seeks to amend section 7 to specify that an application for initiating corporate insolvency action by financial creditors shall be admitted if a default exists, and no other grounds shall be considered for deciding such an application. In case of a plea by a financial institution, records from information utilities will be sufficient evidence to ascertain if there is a default. Besides, the definition of resolution plans is proposed to be expanded to include sale of assets and the right of the corporate applicant to propose the resolution professional is restricted to ensure fairer and more transparent appointments. The proposed amendments restrict withdrawal of applications before the constitution of the committee of creditors and after the first invitation of the resolution plans and also enable continuation of avoidance transaction proceedings post the resolution process. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Learn 57+ Languages Easily with AI [Join] Talkpal AI Sign Up Undo Further, enhancement of recoveries from avoidance transactions, wrongful and fraudulent trading by extending the look back period and allowing creditors to also file for these transactions have been included to maximise asset value. The liquidation process is also sought to be speeded up by empowering the committee of creditors to supervise it, including a provision for replacing the liquidator by a 66% vote, and extending the moratorium available under the corporate insolvency resolution process to the liquidation process (CIRP) in a bid to speed up company dissolution. The proposals allow the Adjudicating Authority to restore CIRP once on the request of the committee of creditors, to enable potential rescue of viable companies. The committee of creditors can also recommend direct dissolution if assets are negligible and can retain or appoint the resolution professional as liquidator. The bill also seeks to introduce a Creditor Initiated Insolvency Resolution Process and do away with fast-track CIRP, which has seen low interest. creditor-initiated insolvency resolution process (CIIRP) is being pushed as a new tool to speed up resolution, while preserving the asset value. Under this process, select FIs can initiate insolvency outside court with approval from unrelated financial institutions, while the corporate debtor can continue to manage the company with oversight from a resolution professional, who would attend meetings of the board of directors and have veto powers. Indian-origin man offers over ₹3302152 crore to Google just to buy…

Perplexity AI, led by Indian-origin CEO Aravind Srinivas, has made an unsolicited $34.5 billion (over ₹3,02,152 crore) all-cash bid to acquire Google Chrome, according to a Reuters report. The offer is far above Perplexity's own valuation and marks the latest bold move from the three-year-old AI startup. Aravind Srinivas with Indian PM Narendra Modi.(Aravind Srinivas/Instagram) The company, which has raised around $1 billion from investors including Nvidia and SoftBank, was last valued at $14 billion. It claims multiple funds have offered to finance the deal in full, though no names were disclosed. Mobile finder: iPhone 17 Air expected to debut next month The bid comes amid regulatory pressure on Google, with the US Justice Department seeking remedies to address what a court ruled was an unlawful monopoly in online search. One proposed measure includes forcing Google to divest Chrome. Google has said it plans to appeal and has not indicated any intention to sell the browser. Analysts expect a legal process, if initiated, could take years and may reach the Supreme Court. Perplexity's proposal pledges to: -Keep Chrome's underlying Chromium code open-source -Invest $3 billion over two years in the browser -Retain Chrome's default search engine settings The company says its plan would 'preserve user choice' and reduce competition concerns. Rivals such as OpenAI, Yahoo, and Apollo Global Management have also shown interest in Chrome, while DuckDuckGo's CEO has estimated its potential forced-sale value at no less than $50 billion. Founded in 2022 by Aravind Srinivas along with Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho, and Andy Konwinski, Perplexity has grown rapidly with its conversational AI search engine, which delivers cited answers in real time. The company recently launched Comet, its own AI-powered browser, and says acquiring Chrome would allow it to access over three billion users worldwide — significantly boosting its ability to compete with OpenAI and others in the AI-driven search space. Srinivas, a Chennai-born IIT Madras graduate, previously worked at Google and interned under deep learning pioneer Yoshua Bengio before launching Perplexity in San Francisco. Under his leadership, the startup has expanded globally, including a partnership with Bharti Airtel in May 2025 that gave 360 million Indian users free access to Perplexity Pro. Despite the high-profile bid, industry experts remain sceptical that Google would part with Chrome, which plays a central role in its AI strategy, including the rollout of AI-generated search summaries under the 'Overviews' feature.
