Clear-up to begin at fire-gutted collapsed cafe
A clear-up is set to begin at a cafe destroyed and left strewn across a street following a fire.
The blaze at the Grade II listed Gorge Cafe in South Street, Dorchester, Dorset, broke out on 9 December, shortly after 03:30 GMT.
The building, where novelist Thomas Hardy trained as an architect, collapsed into the street and the buildings on either side were severely damaged.
Dorset Council has confirmed work is due to get under way to deal with the fallen debris and put up safety scaffolding.
The authority said contractors were currently drawing up a plan for the work which was expected to start "sometime next week, subject to set-up and weather conditions".
Once the work on the cafe site is complete further scaffolding will be put up on the neighbouring buildings, and timber hoarding rebuilt to create a new pedestrian access.
The council added due to the need to "risk assess the buildings daily" a more detailed timescale had not yet been set out.
About 50 firefighters tackled the blaze that swept through the cafe and spread to the roofs of neighbouring buildings.
Since the fire, a stretch of South Street near the burnt-out building has remained cordoned off.
No-one was injured in the fire.
The building had a stone plaque on its front wall, in the centre of the first floor, honouring Thomas Hardy.
It stated the novelist and poet trained at the building as an apprentice architect to John Hicks between 1856-1862.

Spain gradually restoring power after outage on Canaries' La Palma
MADRID (Reuters) -Spain's grid operator, Redeia, said on Tuesday it was gradually restoring power on La Palma after the Canary island suffered a blackout. The power cut on the archipelago's third-smallest island was caused by the failure of a generator at the Los Guinchos power plant in eastern La Palma, the regional government said in a statement, citing utility company Endesa. The outage follows a mass blackout across most of Spain and Portugal on April 28 that caused gridlock across cities and left thousands of people stranded on trains or stuck in elevators. The Canary blackout occurred at 5:30 p.m. (1630 GMT), RTVE reported. Redeia said it had reestablished 6.2 megawatts on La Palma by 7:10 p.m.

Five-star loos lead to 'toilet envy'
Eight public toilets in the Chichester district will be refurbished after getting council approval. The plans follow the demolition and rebuilding of the old toilet block in Tower Street. The new Tower Street toilet, which opened earlier this month, cost more than £200,000 and has been said to be inspiring "envy" in other areas after receiving positive Google reviews. The cost of the latest scheme has not yet been revealed but will be made up of money from the Asset Replacement Fund and from reserves. Chichester District Council does not legally have to provide public toilets, but leader Adrian Moss said they were important to residents, adding that the Tower Street project had been "a triumph". Councillor John Cross added: "There is a bit of toilet envy going on with other district councils because our Tower Street toilets have been given a five-star rating on Google and other district councils want the same!" The toilets set for improvement are in Bracklesham Bay in Bracklesham, Pound Road car park in Petworth, Lifeboat Way in Selsey, Northgate car park in Chichester, Avenue de Chartres car park in Chichester, Hillfield Road in Selsey, Kingfisher Parade in East Wittering and Marine Drive in West Wittering. The council will now look for a contractor to carry out the work, which will be a phased approach over the next two years, said the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
