Kimochi heads into unknown for Queensland Group 1 double shot
Gary Portelli is striving for his first Queensland Group 1 and is set to give strong mare Kimochi two chances in quick succession to pull off the heist.
The Stradbroke Handicap has been the main goal for the Yulong-owned Group 1 winner right from the start of her preparation which included a trio of runs in the Sydney autumn carnival.

Best laid plans have been tweaked with the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup rescheduled to Saturday after being one of the races washed out last Saturday when jockeys complained of poor visibility.
But Warwick Farm trainer Portelli said Kimochi will still race in the Kingsford Smith on Saturday as a pipe-opener to the Stradbroke seven days later.
He admits the seven-day back-up is a step into the unknown for Kimochi, but feels it could even suit her.
• $8000 filly who 'walks like a duck' spices up Stradbroke field
'She will run on Saturday, it's a Group 1 race, and I couldn't go to the 1400(m) of the Stradbroke with her straight away given she has had a big gap between runs,' Portelli said.
'A high pressure handicap like the Stradbroke, they have got to be fit.
'We have never had to back-up before, the program has never had us having to back-up.
'But she is a very tough mare, whenever she races she is normally primed the week afterwards.

'You actually think to yourself that she looks better the week after, than what she did leading into the race.
'She does cope with pressure, she's a big strong mare and she has been in work for ages.
'It's not like she's coming out of a spell and she's going to be too fresh or underdone.
'She has got a good fitness core.'
• Waller gives hobby trainer reason to believe in Stradbroke fairytale
Craig Williams rode Kimochi to Group 1 glory in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield last spring and the pair will reunite at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Kimochi is rated an $11 chance in the Kingsford Smith and is the same price for her main mission of the Stradbroke seven days later.
Nine-time Group 1 winner Portelli has had some terrific horses campaign in Queensland, including Rebel Dane who finished seventh in the 2014 Stradbroke which was won by Queensland bolter River Lad.
But he hopes Kimochi can give him his first Sunshine State Group 1.
'The plan is she will take her place in the Stradbroke, unless we race below expectations this Saturday,' Portelli said.

'From the time she came into work this preparation, the Stradbroke was in my mind the goal.
'We have drawn a fantastic barrier (three) in the Kingsford Smith, so she is going to get a soft run.
'That's important because going into the Stradbroke, she is not going to have a gut-buster and be trapped wide or doing work.
'She will get a nice run and accelerate in the straight, if she runs top three then I would be over the moon from a Straddy point of view.'
• Maher filly making right noises for Oaks upset repeat
Lindsay Park co-trainer Ben Hayes has indicated Rise At Dawn – the winner of eight from 15 starts – will take his place in the Kingsford Smith before being unleashed on the back-up in the Stradbroke.
The Lindsay Park dynasty may have its best chance to crack its Stradbroke duck, with raging favourite War Machine ($3) set to be joined by Rise At Dawn ($11) in Queensland's most prestigious race.

Victory in 2025 The Rosebud could usher in Group 1 targets for Michael Freedman-trained Pallaton
Exciting colt Pallaton could thrust himself straight into the Group 1 frame with a statement performance in Saturday's Listed $200,000 The Rosebud (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens. Trainer Michael Freedman is ready to set the bar high with his smart son of Wootton Bassett but will first need to see him back to his best in the first Sydney stakes race of the season. Pallaton was restricted to just three starts during his juvenile season but showed more than enough to suggest he is a colt with plenty of talent. The lightly-raced three-year-old was a dominant winner on debut at Royal Randwick last December in a performance that put him high in contention for the Golden Slipper. But Pallaton never made Australia's coveted two-year-old showpiece after falling flat in two autumn runs. Freedman is confident he's put the issue behind him as he prepares to unleash the colt in the spring. 'He had his Golden Slipper curtailed when he got a bit of a throat infection after his second run and when he got to the third run he was over the top and overraced badly, showing signs of a two-year-old that wasn't ready to go on with it,' Freedman said. 'He had a nice long break and a nice steady build up. 'The two trials I've been happy so hopefully we can see him show a bit of what we saw on his first start.' That's a BIG win to Pallaton at Randwick! 🙌 @MFreedmanRacing | @TommyBerry21 | @aus_turf_club | @CoolmoreAus — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) December 21, 2024 • Rosehill Turf Talk: Cohen keen on $5 best bet as O'Cass spruiks $17 pop Odds makers have installed Pallaton as a $2.40 favourite in his return with Tommy Berry booked to ride. A Group 1 date could follow his first-up assignment with Group 1 $750,000 Moir Stakes (1000m) at The Valley on September 6 a potential target. 'I want to see what unfolds on Saturday and work it out from there but I wouldn't rule out the possibility of a Moir if he shaped that way because he is quite a powerfully built sprinting type,' Freedman said. 'I think Saturday will give us a better indication of what path we want to go down with him. 'I am certainly not ruling out the Golden Rose as a possibility and am just keeping a lot of options open for him at the moment.' 2 trials, 2 wins into spring for Pallaton (3c Wootton Bassett x Anevay) Had an air of potential topliner about him during the 2YO season. We're about to find out! @MFreedmanRacing @CoolmoreAus — Breednet (@BreednetNews) August 7, 2025 Freedman could already have a three-year-old winner on the program by the time Pallaton goes around with promising stablemate Ninja ($1.95 favourite) set to come to town for the Asahi Super Dry Benchmark 72 Handicap (1300m). Ninja broke his maiden in the most memorable performance, scoring eye-catching style with an 11-1/4 length romp at Kembla Grange. Freedman is wary of overplaying the victory but believes Ninja is a nice horse in the making. 'It was a four horse field on a bog track so I don't think the margin is that significant,' he said. 'He is a nice progressive type and will definitely handle the conditions. 'It is a big jump from a maiden to a Saturday in town but he is still a work in progress. 'I think he is mentally immature at the moment but heading the right way.' Freedman believes Ninja will be suited stepping out in trip and said he will weigh up giving the gelding his chance in the Group 3 $250,000 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens on September 13 if he runs well again. Polyglot is another exciting galloper that could be himself in the frame for better races in the spring when he returns in the TAB Benchmark 78 Handicap (1100m). It will be Freedman's second Godolphin runner following the success of Ohope at Hawkesbury during the week. Polyglot, a $5 favourite, had trialled up well in the lead up but James McDonald has been set a task with a tricky draw from barrier 12. Victory ✌ï¸ Victoire 🇫🇷 Victoria 🇰🇸 Polyglot is too good for them at Rosehill and that's an early double for @mcacajamez! @JamesCummings88 | @godolphin | @aus_turf_club — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) January 18, 2025 • 'I am really happy with Polyglot,' Freedman said. 'He had two nice trials and is obviously familiar with the course and distance but the big concern will be the barrier in terms of where he might get to from the draw. 'I will have a chat to James and see where we think we can get to but he's in good order, just would have liked a softer draw.'

Best bets and value play for Seymour races Friday
News Corp form analyst Brad Waters looks at Friday's meeting at Seymour. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! â â â â â BEST BET PLAYLIST (Race 7 No.9): Didn't have the best of luck when resuming at Geelong but will be much fitter. Expecting her to be hard to hold out. NEXT BEST DOLLAR SHOT (Race 6 No.12): The consistent performer was too strong at Bairnsdale second-up. Should be able to measure up to a harder assignment at Seymour on Friday. BLAZING SWORD (Race 8 No.2): Won impressively at Albury before closing steadily at Sandown last time. Looks ready for the step to 2000m now. VALUE BET NO OVERTAKING (Race 4 No.6): The four-year-old led and tried hard when placed on the synthetic on debut. She gets onto the turf on Friday and could be harder to run down. LAY OF THE DAY VALLEY KING (Race 8 No.4): Equal favourite in betting on his Seymour assignment but he won't get his preferred heavy ground in which he was well held at Warrnambool last start. THE JOCKEY BEN MELHAM Jockey Ben Melham heads to Seymour for five rides on Friday. AFTER SUMMER (Race 1 No.1 – $4.20), TERRORTORIAN (Race 2 No.5 – $4.80), SECRET GLORY (Race 4 No.14 – $5), CATCH THE WIND (Race 5 No.14 – $1.90), LA MEETING (Race 7 No.1 – $18). Shayne O'Cass's best bets, inside mail for Tamworth, Taree on Friday, August 15, 2025
Form analyst Shayne O'Cass provides his best bets and race-by-race analysis for Tamworth and Taree on Friday. â– â– â– â– â– TAMWORTH TIPS BEST BET Race 3 No.11 OAKFIELD VIRGINIA: Blue-blood filly who placed in a deep trial at Gosford last month. NEXT BEST Race 7 No.6 OCCULT: Has got Country Championships contender written all over him. VALUE Race 1 No.1 GREAT COSMIC: Local gelding who has trialled up nicely ahead of the debut. QUADDIE Race 5: 3,5,7,11 Race 6: 4,5,10 Race 7: 6 Race 8: 1,2,6,12 JOCKEY TO FOLLOW Grant 'Bucko' Buckley will be popular in the TAB Jockeys Challenge TAMWORTH INSIDE MAIL RACE 5: Benchmark 58 (1600m) CROATIAN MADAME (11) has been nominated for other venues so is not a guaranteed starter. On top if she comes otherwise all roads lead to BIG SHORT (5), who is trained locally by this year's Grafton Guineas winning conditioner Wayne Brown. Big Short's three wins are from 1000m to 1200m but he has placed four times from right 1600m runs. SUIT DAY (3) has only managed two wins from 20 starts but he has placed nine times. Best of all, he is a win and a third from four Tamworth visits. BET: BIG SHORT (5) each-way. RELEASE POINT (4) was an impressive debut winner at Narromine in late April, 2024. The Rodney Northam trained gelding hasn't won again since but he has finished second, four times, in those subsequent nine starts. Been competitive in better races and gets Aaron Bullock. HINUNE (5) has accepted for Bathurst Monday. Big chance wherever she goes. CRUSADER RAZOR (10) has drawn wide but will come in plenty with the scratchings! Beaten 3-lengths by a good horse (Bonnie And Bruce) at Bathurst last time. BET: RELEASE POINT (4) to win, CRUSADER RAZOR (10) to place, Daily Double 1st Leg 4, 2nd Leg 1. OCCULT (6) was $1.24 into $1.12 when he made his Cody Morgan stable debut here on June 27 and won accordingly. One can only assume that he was bought (off Godolphin) with the Country Championships in mind and London to a Brick-on, he'll be in the Heat if they want him to go that way. OENOLOGY (3) has a wide draw and is first-up but he's a pretty reliable horse. TOUGH GUY (5) (Bullock's ride) is on such a rapid, upward trajectory. So too NIMBLE STAR (2) who has won 3 from 4 and lost the rider at the other. BET: OCCULT (6) to win, box trifecta 2,3,5,6. SPIRIT OF PLUTO (1) has won five times with eight placings from 32 starts. He has placed twice here, twice at the distance and twice first-up. He was on a hat-trick prior to a creditable effort in the Newmarket at Armidale. gets 'in' okay now after the claim. THE AFFIRMATIVE (12) has a really compelling set of numbers right across the board apart, maybe, by her first-up stats. The Anthony Manton-owned, Craig Clegg-trained local races well here at home but was dealt the visitor's draw! Can imagine LA PELAGO (6) making full use of the inside draw. BET: SPIRIT OF PLUTO (1) each-way. â– â– â– â– â– TAREE TIPS BEST BET Race 2 No.3 LYKOS: Big run with no luck on debut at Tuncurry on the Heavy 8. NEXT BEST Race 4 No.7 SHALAMIYNA: Beat a decent Maiden field here on a Heavy 9. VALUE Race 7 No.7 THE YOUNG YEARS: Her 'best' is good enough to give some cheek in the right Highway. TAREE INSIDE MAIL BUCK PHAROAH (5) gets the conditions to suit, big time, on Friday keeping in mind that his record on the Heavy going is nine starts for four wins and three placings. Four of his six career wins are circa this short trip and he races well at Taree. Nine of ZOE SHARK (3) 's last 11 starts have been at her home track at Newcastle. She's won two of them and one of those she beat Dark Glitter no less. LADY TULESSA (6) has nine wins on her resume which is not easy too in any era let alone in the Benchmark system. BET: BUCK PHAROAH (5) to win. VEECEE (1), the $750,000 Gold Coast yearling in 2022, sold online in 2024, has got lengths on these. In fact, I would be happy to back him in most Highways BUT with that said, I am not sure about him on really wet tracks. GOT THE SMARTS (5) has accepted for Ballina on Monday but drew poorly (13) as opposed to (2) here. She is a 6YO with just nine starts under her belt but she is loaded with talent. There is a scenario where both are absent which could pave the way for the Paul Snowden-trained CASH AND CARDS (2). BET: CASH AND CARDS (2) to place. THE YOUNG YEARS (7) is one of those horses whose 'best' is good enough to win most races that she runs in, even a Highway if things really fell into her lap that is. She goes well enough at Taree, she goes particularly well on Heavy tracks and has run okay in some rather strong 58's of late. HYPOTHERMIA (6) ran way above his $41 SP when fifth, beaten a diminishing three-lengths, in a 58 at Grafton last start. Both wins were on Soft. KAYZ TIME (1) has Sammy Conquers All and Bodhi Boy form. OSTRACISED (4) is racing so well this prep. For the record, he is '822117'. That last run was in the Coffs Harbour Cup. He wasn't great by any stretch but this is more his go on Friday. Two things weigh heavily in his favour IMHO, one is back to 1412m and the other is that he is a muddie par excellence. LEASE (8) commemorated his 50th career start with a win and what a determined win it was too from a horse who has a distinct preference for wet tracks.
