Opening next month, the prestigious international World Press Photo Exhibition returns to showcase the world's most compelling photojournalism from around the globe. Following the closure of Smith & Caughey's at the end of July, the exhibition has a new home for 2025 thanks to the generosity of the owners of 131 Queen Street and the team at Krukziener Properties. The exhibition will run as scheduled from 26 July – 24 August, with tickets available online via Eventfinda or at the door.
The World Press Photo Exhibition offers a striking window into the past year's defining and often overlooked moments and news events, capturing stories of conflict, climate, culture and community. The World Press Photo Exhibition features a wide selection of images from the World Press Photo Contest 2025, taken by 42 international photo journalists and documentary photographers.
Included in the diverse selection of images and stories on display at this year's exhibition is Amanda Maciel Perobelli's series Brazil's Worst-Ever Floods that captures record-breaking floods in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, which caused widespread environmental devastation, the displacement of over 600,000 residents, and the death of 183 people.
Federico Ríos' project Paths of Desperate Hope documents a variety of individuals as they journey through one of the most important migration routes in the world, the Darién Gap, a 100-kilometer long stretch of dense and roadless jungle connecting Colombia and Panama. This treacherous land route is a critical passage for those seeking to migrate from South America to the United States, with more than a million people having braved the route since 2021.
Also on display will be Ebrahim Alipoor's long term project Bullets Have No Borders, capturing kolbars (border couriers) who carry goods such as household appliances, mobile phones, and clothes, on their backs through treacherous terrain from Iraq and Turkey into Iranian Kurdistan. They work in incredibly tough conditions, for very little money, and at risk to their lives – both from the elements and from authorities.
The Rotary Club of Auckland is proud to bring the World Press Photo Exhibition to Auckland, with all proceeds from the event going towards Rotary youth charities and disability charity PHAB.

Creative companions to launch fest programme
Kiwi artist and author Dick Frizzell will be part of a special event in Queenstown next month. PHOTOS: SUPPLIED Two of the country's most celebrated visual artists, and great mates, will launch this year's Queenstown Writers Festival programme. Painter Dick Frizzell's coming to Queenstown to discuss his new memoir, Hastings, with Central Otago's Sir Grahame Sydney on August 31. Writers fest chair Tanya Surrey's delighted the titans of Aotearoa art have agreed to be part of the programme launch, details of which will be revealed after the pair's chat. Frizzell's known for his kiwiana paintings, including 'Mickey to Tiki', along with landscapes and still life, but he's also a gifted story-teller — Hastings, his fifth book, is a childhood memoir and love letter to a small regional town and his parents. Described as "funny, big-hearted and sharply drawn", it includes 30 short stories, each conjuring a moment of his Hawke's Bay childhood. Kiwi artist and author Sir Grahame Sydney will be part of a special event in Queenstown next month. Meantime Sir Grahame — knighted in the 2021 Queen's Birthday Honours for services to art — is known from his decades painting Central Otago landscapes, but he's also authored several books. He can't remember meeting Frizzell, but remembers considering himself a "little faraway regionalist painter from the insignificant south", describing Frizzell as a "trendy, contemporary, up and out there famous Aucklander". While Sir Grahame says Frizzell was "much older than me", Mountain Scene understands the age gap's about five years. He says Frizzell was "all the things I wasn't" — "charismatic and confident and probably as rich as Croesus", and he boasted a "fabulous" head of hair. Sir Grahame says he's got "immense admiration" for Frizzell's many talents. While best known as an artist, he's also a "wonderful" writer and a "demon" ukulele player. "The only thing he can't do is sing," he quips. Tickets for the festival launch with Frizzell and Sir Grahame went on sale Thursday, via Eventfinda.

Ten Years Of Art, Story And Spectacle: The 2025 Hawke's Bay Arts Festival Programme Has Landed
The 2025 Hawke's Bay Arts Festival programme has been officially unveiled, marking a milestone tenth year for one of the region's most anticipated cultural events. Taking place from 9 – 19 October across Hastings, Havelock North and Napier, the Festival will present live music, dance, theatre, circus and a range of visual art exhibitions and family-friendly events. Festival Director Jade Baker says the 2025 programme is a celebration of legacy and possibility. 'This year's Festival is a reflection of everything we've learned that the community loves, over the past ten years. But it's also a call to keep going.' 'Creativity bridges imagination and reality,' continues Ms Baker. 'It fuels problem solving, innovation, and connection and it deserves greater recognition in Aotearoa. The arts don't just enrich lives; they shape stronger, more resilient communities. They help us make sense of the world around us and remind us what it means to be human.' 'Whether it's your first time at the Festival or your tenth, we want everyone to feel welcome. There's something in the programme for every age, every price point, and every kind of curiosity,' says Baker. Headlining the Festival is Cirque Bon Bon – a glittering, high-energy circus spectacular fresh from sell-out shows across Australia. Other highlights include the return of internationally acclaimed soul singer Deva Mahal, bold new contemporary dance work Holding Ground by New Zealand Dance Company, critically acclaimed theatre pieces Hysterical and Guru of Chai, immersive jazz cabaret The Velvet Rebels, and an intimate indie-folk gig, Fables. The Festival also features a wide range of visual art, family-friendly events, and regionally rooted programming that reflects the creative spirit of Hawke's Bay. Mayor of Hastings Sandra Hazlehurst says the return of the Festival marks an exciting milestone for the region. 'It's a real pleasure to welcome the Hawke's Bay Arts Festival back to Heretaunga Hastings for its tenth anniversary. This event brings such vibrancy and creativity to our community, and it's wonderful to see it return with a programme that reflects the best of who we are. Fam Is Back: Film Festival Edition: Karangahape Road Becomes A Living Cinema
Press Release – Elephant Publicity After the first FAM celebration lit up Karangahape Road in May, it's back this winter with a brand-new twist. On Saturday 2 August, the street transforms into a living, breathing cinema with films popping up in arcades, alleyways, shopfronts, and around all kinds of unexpected corners. FAM: Film Festival Edition will fill the street with screenings, live performances, and music from 2pm 'til late and it's all completely free. This full-street takeover, inspired by the spirit of the New Zealand International Film Festival, has a very K' Road flavour. At East Street, catch Homeward Bound with your dog (yes, furry friends are welcome), or sing your heart out at Cult Classic with Kita, an interactive, glitter-soaked evening hosted by the fabulous drag superstar Kita Mean. Settle in for a John Carpenter horror double feature at Whammy Bar. Expect big sounds outside Pitt Street Church, including a set from the one and only Bub, led by Priya Sami, will be rocking the street. Add to that nostalgic shorts, underground premieres, music videos, and showtunes from the pink piano on Pitt Street, and you've got yourself a cinematic street party like no other. ' FAM is all about bringing people together on K' Road and using all the weird and wonderful spaces we've got on this iconic street,' says Ella, Creative Producer at the Karangahape Road Business Association. ' It's fun, it's a bit chaotic, and there's something for everyone.' Other highlights of the day include Guerilla Filmmaking Workshop with Julia Reynolds (2:30pm to 4pm) A hands-on session for aspiring storytellers looking to make films. Kiri & Lou Takeover at St Kevins Arcade (2pm – 5pm) Join SMALL RAVE for a playful afternoon of Kiri and Lou magic at St Kevins Arcade. Activities include clay animation, storytime, hands-on crafts, and screenings of the BAFTA-nominated kids show. Free fun for all ages — come get silly and creative! Day One short films, local music videos, and live performances from Bub, Goodspace and dān dān (4pm – 7pm) Top of the Pitts Stage outside Pitt St Church Everything Everywhere All At Once – Step into the K' Road laundromat to watch this epic movie which will play on a loop all evening (2pm – 6pm) Beyond the Familiar: Artist Talk at RM Gallery (4pm) Beyond the Familiar is a portrayal of an in-between world, shaped by the movements of migration. Featuring Tāmaki Makaurau-based artists from South-East Asian and Pasifika backgrounds, the exhibition reflects on their diasporic experiences, where identity, belonging, and memory intersect across shifting cultural landscapes. Paraidolia: Immersive Art Exhibition at The Button Factory (from 6pm) Wander through a world of abstract paintings and sculptural lamps that play with perception and emotion. Queer Night Club CHURCH: at Neck of the Woods (10pm) An offering of sound, movement and connection, this edition features a special collaboration with illustrator and poet Māori Mermaid (Jessica Hinerangi Thompson-Carr).
