RTÉ News20-06-2025
Thousands of people are expected in Dublin this weekend with a large number of major events being held across the capital.
Gardaí have said that the public transport network as well as roads in and around the city centre will be busy across the weekend, with people asked to plan their journeys well in advance.
The Phoenix Park will play host to three major concerts, with US country star Zach Bryan taking the stage tonight, tomorrow evening and Sunday evening.
Organisers say up to 180,000 fans are expected to attend the gigs across the weekend.
In Fairview Park, Dundalk folk group The Mary Wallopers will play a sold-out concert this evening before US indie band Kingfishr perform in the north Dublin venue tomorrow night.
The British and Irish Lions will kick off their six-week campaign with their first ever test match in Ireland, with the Aviva Stadium expected to be at full capacity.
Around 51,000 spectators are set to watch Andy Farrell's side take on Argentina at 8pm this evening.
There will be two Croke Park double headers this weekend. Tomorrow, Dublin will take on Limerick in the All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship quarter-final at 4pm.
This will be followed by the All Ireland Senior Football Championship quarter final between Dublin and Cork at 6.15pm.
On Sunday, both Tailteann Cup semi-finals will be hosted in Croker back to back. Wicklow take on Limerick at 2pm followed by Kildare vs Fermanagh at 4pm.
There are also two public gatherings planned for Dublin city centre on Sunday afternoon, which are expected to lead to road closures.
Speaking ahead of this weekend's events, Assistant Commissioner for Dublin, Paul Cleary said: "This weekend is packed with lots of activity and with the summer weather also looking promising, we look forward to helping to welcome thousands of people into Dublin to make the most of their weekend.
"We want you to enjoy yourselves if socialising or attending any one of the exciting sporting and music events happening in the city, but to please be mindful of others and how your behaviour may impact their experience.
"This summer's public events would not be able to go ahead were it not for the gardaí that will be working above and beyond this weekend and for the remainder of the summer to keep people safe.
"Should you feel unsafe or need our assistance in any way over the weekend, please contact us or stop anyone of us on our high-visibility patrols across the city, and in an emergency or immediate danger, always dial 999/112."
Iarnród Éireann will run extra services to help manage the large crowds, with late-night trains operating from Heuston Station following the Zach Bryan concerts.
Dublin Bus has said there will be a number of diverions on some routes, such as the 11, 26, 37, 38, 38a and 69.
Road closures will also be in place around Ballsbridge ahead of the Lions match, with an additional Connolly to Drogheda service scheduled for 11.25pm tomorrow night.
Iarnród Éireann, Dublin Bus and An Garda Síochána will share updates on their social media pages across the weekend.

He also went on to represent the UK at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Brazil and win two ATP Tour titles - the first in Antwerp in 2018 and then in New York in 2020. After reaching the rank of British No1 in 2018, succeeding Murray, Edmund started to struggle with knee problems. Edmund underwent the first of three procedures in 2020, sidelining him for the best part of two years. It also unfortunately signalled the end of his time at the top, as Edmund never made it past the first round of a grand slam or ATP 1000 tournament again.

Fermanagh boss announces shock exit after 5 years in charge

Fermanagh GAA have confirmed the surprise exit of head coach Kieran Donnelly after five years in charge of the county. Donnelly has stepped down from the role, adding to a number of inter-county manager resignations this season. According to a statement posted on Fermanagh GAA's website on Monday, Donnelly met with officers over the weekend to inform them of his decision. Kieran Donnelly has stepped down from his role. Pic: Stephen Marken/Sportsfile The ex-player has become the 12th inter-county football manager to exit their side following the 2025 season. Fermanagh stated: 'Fermanagh GAA would like to sincerely thank Kieran and his entire backroom team for their dedication and commitment over the last four years. 'Transitioning from Covid and the new playing rules has not been an easy task. 'While silverware may have eluded, Kieran brought a great culture and positive environment to the senior side. 'We wish Kieran, his family and all the backroom team every success in the future.' At the start of the season, Fermanagh were fourth in the Allianz Football League Division 3, having previously gained promotion in 2023. Donnelly's final year in charge was hindered by two near misses with the side throwing away a match-winning position in their Ulster clash against Down. Donnelly is the 12th manager to leave his role this season. Pic: Ray McManus/Sportsfile They were also level with Kildare in the Tailteann Cup semi-final with 15 minutes to go before falling away in the final minutes. Donnelly added in a statement that it was a 'privilege' to serve as manager. He said: 'It has been an honour and a privilege to serve as manager of the Fermanagh senior football team. I wish to extend my sincere gratitude to my backroom team for their dedication and professionalism throughout my tenure. 'The players have shown tremendous growth and development, and I am proud of the progress the squad has made during this period. I would like to wish the players, management, and supporters of Fermanagh GAA every success in the years ahead.' Naturally, rumours have begun to fly in surrounding where Donnelly will go to next. However, speculation had been rife that the boss was planning to step away ever since that Kildare loss. Donnelly had played for Fermanagh himself in the 90s, even appearing in Division 1 action before taking up a management role with the county's minor team.

Sky pundit angers fans after calling Keith Andrews 'British'

Sky Sports pundit and former Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson triggered a familiar nerve among Ireland fans on Saturday. Dawson mistakenly labelled Keith Andrews as 'British' while discussing how he might get on as the new Brentford boss. Andrews, who earned 35 caps for Ireland during his playing days, endured a 3-1 defeat away to Nottingham Forest in his first game as a Premier League manager. Michael Dawson sparked fury among Ireland fans. Pic: Visionhaus/Getty Images During the pre-match discussion on Sky Sports, Dawson remarked that Andrews getting the nod to replace Thomas Frank at Brentford was a 'new British manager getting an opportunity in the Premier League'. Unsurprisingly, the ex-Hull City defender's comment sparked a bit of irritation among Irish football fans and they made sure to vent their frustration on social media. One user wrote: 'Michael Dawson referred to Keith Andrews as a 'British manager' on Sky Sports today. Thought Sky Sports like to educate people on this matter or maybe that's just for the Irish women's team. Dawson and Sky Sports, clowns.' Another said: 'FYI Michael Dawson: Keith Andrews is Irish, not British! What is it about Sky Sports News getting things like that wrong?' A third added: 'Michael Dawson just said with reference to Keith Andrews that it's great to see a 'new British manager getting an opportunity in the Premier League'. Daft in this day and age really.' One other person saw the lighter side of it and quipped: 'We need Clinton Morrison to start calling the likes of Eddie Howe Irish.' Andrews will no doubt have more to worry about than pundits getting his nationality wrong after his opening day anguish against Forest. There were question marks about the Dubliner's appointment at the club with fans immediately presuming his lack of experience won't get him far. Andrews joined Brentford in July 2024 as a set-piece coach and was promoted to the major role after Thomas Frank's departure this summer. However, conceding from a corner five minutes into his first match set an ominous tone for a new manager whose specialty was set-pieces. Andrews has had a tough start at Brentford. Pic:Fans have not held back their criticism of the 44-year-old online. One said: 'Keith Andrews will be the first PL manager sacked this season. Completely out of his depth and everyone knew it back in June when he was appointed.' Another wrote: 'Get Keith Andrews the f*** out of here. An absolute joke of an appointment by Brentford. Feel sorry for their players and fans.' A third simply added: 'Brentford are playing like a team managed by Keith Andrews.' In fairness to Andrews, he was handed a pretty nightmarish task replacing Frank at the club. Not only did the long-serving boss depart but Brentford also lost two key players with star man Bryan Mbeumo moving to Manchester United and captain Christian Norgaard heading to Arsenal. On top of these, talented striker Yoane Wissa is heavily linked with a move to Newcastle and is essentially unavailable for selection until the move is complete. A couple of fans shared sympathy for Andrews, understanding the immediate obstacles thrust upon him. One fan said: 'Felt sorry for Keith Andrews. He clearly wanted Wissa in his squad and in his team today but he's obviously not in the right frame of mind after being tapped up. He wants the situation sorted. I don't understand why Newcastle don't just pay the asking price and get it over with.' Another agreed: 'Keith Andrews looked gutted today. He really wanted Wissa to play … it could have made a big difference. Now he has to replace him, so selling him quickly is a must.'
