Way-too-early men's college basketball rankings from USA TODAY Sports for Florida Gators
It has been less than 24 hours since the Florida Gators earned their third-ever national championship in the 2025 men's college basketball NCAA Tournament and already, the sports media is looking ahead to next fall.
While the ticker tape still lines the floor inside the Alamodome, USA TODAY Sports' Paul Myerberg, Erick Smith and Eddie Timanus put together their way-too-early ranking for the 2025-26 campaign. In it, Todd Golden's team remains among the top 10, but the loss of the team's seniors — including All-American guard Walter Clayton Jr. — will be a tough void to fill.
Nonetheless, the trio expects Florida to come in at No. 8 with six months standing between now and the start of the preseason. They offered a succinct explanation for the pick.
"There will certainly be a transition from a team led by All-America guard Walter Clayton, and he will be hard to replace," they note. "However, the Gators still should have most of the inside players returning, with Thomas Haugh, Alex Condon and Rueben Chinyelu all poised for increased production. Denzel Aberdeen should be a consistent perimeter scorer and will get boosted by incoming freshman Alex Lloyd."

Fever Coach Stephanie White Gives Major Caitlin Clark Injury Update
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Indiana Fever fans may have gotten their hopes up just a bit over the weekend when superstar guard Caitlin Clark's official injury status was upgraded to game-time decision ahead of the team's matchup against the Dallas Wings on Tuesday. Clark, who's averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists, 5.0 rebounds, 1.6 steals, and 31.1 minutes per game this season, has been sidelined for nearly four weeks with a right groin injury that forced her to miss the WNBA All-Star Game on July 19, which was held in front of her hometown fans in Indianapolis. This is the fourth major injury Clark has suffered this season. She's missed 19 of the Fever's 32 games plus the WNBA Commissioners' Cup Final while dealing with a left groin injury and a quadriceps injury, plus she missed some time during the preseason with a hand injury. So when fans saw Clark's status had been updated on the WNBA web site, it was speculated she could be nearing a possible return. "No return to practice," White told Peterson. "She's been able to get a little bit more in her full-court running with all of her body weight. It's really building up from doing minimal to then building some endurance to do longer periods of time. She's been able to do a bit more on the court in terms of how she moves but not into practice yet." Indiana (18-14) sits in a fifth-place tie with the Las Vegas Aces, right behind the Minnesota Lynx, New York Liberty, Atlanta Dream, and Phoenix Mercury. With just 12 games left in the regular season, many fans have urged the Fever to consider shutting Clark down for most, if not all of those contests to have her healthy when the postseason starts in mid-september. However, with the recent season-ending injuries to guards Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson, getting Clark back on the court a more pressing matter. What Travis Hunter's preseason debut hints about his main focus for Jaguars
Yahoo Sports NFL analyst Nate Tice, fantasy analyst Matt Harmon and NFL writer Charles Robinson react to the two-way star's usage in Saturday's opener and what it hints towards his potential for this season. Hear the full conversation on 'Football 301' - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript What was one thing you learned from the opening weekend of preseason, our first taste of NFL football for 2025. Yeah, so since I was delayed in multiple airports yesterday, I got a lot of work done, including one thing because I'm a sick freak. I did a little charting of the Jaguars offensive players here where they just, just where they lined up. No routes were charted, no success rates, none of that, but I was just curious about the alignment. And yeah, if you are watching on YouTube, you can see my handwritten, if it gets in framed there: 13 snaps for BTJ, 12 for Travis Hunter, who I don't think played with the first team defense at all. He only played with the first team offense, which I thought was interesting. Hunter was like 50/50 outside slot, but he was 83% of those 12 snaps off the line of scrimmage, whereas BTJ was 84.6% on the line of scrimmage, which I think makes sense for how these two guys are gonna be used. I thought that was interesting to just take a note of how these, very early clues about how these two receivers, Brian Thomas Junior and Travis Hunter are going to be deployed. I think it makes sense for what they're doing with Hunter, right? He got a screen target, that was one of the plays that was called back. ETN was on the field a lot, so from a running back standpoint, that, I think, is notable. He had a 10-yard screen reception too. So just some early clues on how I think this offense is going to feel pretty dynamic in terms of the player usage, how they have two guys who can line up inside and out, two guys that can take snaps on the line of scrimmage, but, yeah, again, especially. Travis Hunter mostly being used off the line and in the slot a lot, I think is going to allow him to get a lot of free releases. They had him running a lot of quick in breakers. So just again, these early clues on the Jaguars' wide receiver usage, and in addition to Travis, ETN's like receiving usage, especially on those screens. We know how productive. The Buccaneers offense was last year throwing screens to multiple players. But especially to Bucky Irving out of the backfield. That was at least, uh, it looks like there's going to be some carryover there against, uh, that offense this year. This is what they've been practicing like. He's a receiver first, and he's a spot DB, you know, a role-playing DB that they use in high-leverage situations. Close

Free agent former Mavericks big man working out for East contender
Free agent former Mavericks big man working out for East contender originally appeared on The Sporting News A free agent former Dallas Mavericks power forward/center is auditioning for an Eastern Conference hopeful. It makes sense that Dallas itself isn't interested in bringing the big man back, as the Mavericks currently boast a glut (perhaps a surplus) of frontcourt talent already. Sources inform longtime NBA insider Chris Haynes that Kai Jones is putting in a workout for the Miami Heat on Monday. This story will be updated...
