Tigers shut down Ohtani to take exhibition game over Dodgers

Japan Times16-03-2025

Hiroto Saiki got the best of Shohei Ohtani this time and helped the Hanshin Tigers leave their mark on the Tokyo Series.
Saiki silenced the Los Angeles Dodgers' bats for five innings, and slugger Teruaki Sato hit a three-run home run off two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell to lead the Tigers to a 3-0 win over the World Series champions in front of a crowd of 42,059 at Tokyo Dome on Sunday.
The Tigers were a perfect 2-for-2 against the MLB clubs visiting Japan after beating the Chicago Cubs 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. Los Angeles split its games against the Tigers and the Yomiuri Giants.
The Dodgers and Cubs will open the MLB season at Tokyo Dome on Tuesday night.

Ohtani, who hit a two-run homer against the Giants in a 5-1 win on Saturday night, hit at the top of the Dodgers' order for the second straight day and was 0-for-2 before being lifted for a pinch hitter.
'I thought he took some good swings,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. 'But it was planned for him to take two at-bats today and get ready for the opener.'
The superstar homered from his knee against Saiki during one of Samurai Japan's warmup games in Osaka ahead of the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
Saiki got a little revenge in the first inning on Sunday. He went ahead in the count 0-2 after Ohtani took a fastball for a strike and fouled off another. Saiki missed with a pair of forkballs before he got Ohtani to swing at a forkball in the dirt for the strikeout.
He retired the MLB star on a fly ball to center in the third inning.

Saiki struck out seven, allowed one hit and walked a batter over five innings.
The contest was scoreless heading into the bottom of the fourth.
Koji Chikamoto drew a walk to start the inning, and Takumu Nakano singled to record Hanshin's first hit.
Sato put a charge into the Tigers' cheering section with a homer to right to put the NPB club ahead 3-0.
'Chikamoto and Nakano created the chance for me, and I really wanted to take advantage of it,' said Sato, who had 16 home runs for Hanshin during the 2024 NPB campaign. 'I'm glad we ended up with the best result.'
The Dodgers faced a quick turnaround after playing the late game on Saturday.

Manager Dave Roberts began Sunday's game with the same lineup, but made changes during the contest.
Perennial All-Star Mookie Betts, who is moving to shortstop this season, is recovering from an illness, and did not play for the second straight day. Betts worked out on the field during batting practice.
The Tigers faced two of the top pitchers in MLB in Snell and Tyler Glasnow, who entered the game to start the sixth.
Snell gave up three runs on three hits and struck out seven in 4⅓ innings. He walked two batters.
Glasnow officially threw three scoreless innings. The teams played the bottom of the ninth despite the Tigers being the home team, and Glasnow added another scoreless frame after escaping a bases-loaded situation.
Max Muncy, Andy Pages and Austin Barnes had singles for Los Angeles.

Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani moves closer to pitching return

Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani pitched a three-inning simulated game on Tuesday, increasing optimism about his return to the mound in the major leagues. Asked whether Ohtani could pitch for the team before the All-Star break, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the chances are "north of zero." Roberts added, "It's tempting. I'm sure Shohei feels tempted to just kind of rip the Band-Aid off and get into a big-league game. But I think we're doing a good job of being patient. And truth be told, I don't think anyone knows the right time to get him in a big-league game. We're still being very careful, I guess." Ohtani last pitched in the majors in August 2023 before undergoing his second Tommy John surgery a month later. The Tuesday work marked the third time Ohtani had thrown from the mound against batters, and he fired 44 pitches. The prior time, on May 31, he tossed 29 pitches. According to Ohtani allowed just one hit and one walk in his three innings on Tuesday. While he works to return to pitching so he can again be a two-way player, Ohtani remains one of the majors' top hitters. Entering the Tuesday game against the Padres, Ohtani was batting .291 with a .387 on-base percentage, a .628 slugging percentage, a National League-leading 23 homers and 39 RBIs. Ohtani won NL Most Valuable Player honors last year after serving strictly as a designated hitter, as he led the league with 54 homers, 130 RBIs, a .390 on-base percentage and a .646 slugging percentage while stealing 59 bases. For good measure, he helped the Dodgers win the World Series last fall. Ohtani was the American League MVP in both 2021 and 2023 for the Los Angeles Angels when he was superb as both a pitcher and a hitter. For his career on the mound, Ohtani is 38-19 with a 3.01 ERA in 86 starts.

Baseball: Shohei Ohtani solid in practice as pitching comeback progresses

KYODO NEWS - 7 minutes ago - 13:22 | Sports, All Shohei Ohtani struck out six in three simulated innings Tuesday as the Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star took another step toward his pitching comeback. Ohtani, kept off the Major League Baseball mound since he underwent right elbow surgery while with the Los Angeles Angels in September 2023, faced minor-league batters 11 times during a 44-pitch outing at Petco Park before the Dodgers' game against the San Diego Padres. Manager Dave Roberts said there is a "north of zero" chance of Ohtani returning as a pitcher before the All-Star break and added "It's tempting," according to The reigning National League MVP issued a walk but gave up no drives that would have likely been hits in his third live batting practice since the surgery, with his fastest pitch clocked at 96 miles per hour, according to a member of the Dodgers staff. Padres right-hander Yu Darvish watched on as his Japanese compatriot struck out a batter from a set position and used all his pitches, including sliders. "From pitch to pitch, I thought he was in command the whole time today," Dodgers pitching coach Mark Prior said. "We were just sitting back and watching and there wasn't a whole lot to say. He was doing whatever he wanted with the baseball, with every pitch he wanted to." "He's trying to get into the 60-70 pitch range, then he can start envisioning and dreaming about being in the game because then he knows that he has the volume under him to go out there and at least take down multiple innings." MLB/ Shohei Ohtani moves closer to his Dodgers mound debut, throwing 3 simulated innings in San Diego

(AP Photo) SAN DIEGO--Shohei Ohtani is moving ever closer to his first pitching appearance for the Los Angeles Dodgers. In fact, there's now a chance his fans might not even have to wait until the All-Star break. Ohtani looked sharp while throwing three simulated innings on Tuesday at Petco Park before the Dodgers faced the San Diego Padres, manager Dave Roberts said. The outing was another significant step in Ohtani's recovery from the elbow surgery that has prevented the two-way superstar from pitching since he signed with the Dodgers before last season. Ohtani threw just under 50 pitches to two minor league hitters during the third simulated game in his gradual comeback to the mound. The three-time MVP used his fastball and sweeper impressively, according to Roberts and Dodgers pitching coach Mark Prior. 'I thought he was really good,' Roberts said. 'I thought the fastball had life. I thought the sweeper was really good. ... (The hitters) said the stuff was coming out really well. It was about 44 pitches or something like that, so it was really good.' The Dodgers have been cagey about the timeline for Ohtani's return to the mound, with Roberts suggesting in recent weeks that it might not happen until after the All-Star break. But after Ohtani's latest mound outing, Roberts now says the chance of Ohtani pitching in a game before the All-Star break begins July 14 is 'north of zero.' 'It doesn't have to be a full buildup, because anything that he can give us is certainly going to be additive,' Roberts added. 'But I still stand by him and Dr. (Neal) ElAttrache, the training staff. They're going to drive this. So I'm just anxious for the next one.' Ohtani hasn't pitched in a major league game since Aug. 23, 2023, when he abruptly left in the second inning of his final start for the Los Angeles Angels. He was eventually diagnosed with a torn elbow ligament that required surgery. Ohtani has demonstrated elite pitching ability when healthy: He went 38-19 with a 3.01 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP while starting 86 games over five seasons for the Angels. He didn't pitch at all in 2019 and made just two starts in 2020 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. Ohtani has remained steadfastly committed to playing both ways despite his hitting prowess, and the Dodgers could really use him on the mound this season. Los Angeles has 14 pitchers on the injured list, including expected starters Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Roki Sasaki, Tony Gonsolin and Gavin Stone. Still, the Dodgers say they won't rush their cornerstone. 'It's tempting,' Roberts said with a smile. 'I'm sure Shohei is tempted to just rip the Band-Aid off and get into a big-league game, but I think we're doing a good job of trying to take care of him. And truth be told, I don't know if anyone knows the right time to get him into a big-league game, but we're still being very careful.' Ohtani has been only a designated hitter since he agreed to a 10-year, $700 million free-agent deal with the Dodgers. He immediately won his third MVP award in 2024, batting .310 with 54 homers, 130 RBIs and 59 stolen bases for the eventual World Series champions. Ohtani was in his usual spot as the Dodgers' leadoff hitter for Tuesday night's game against the Padres. Los Angeles planned to throw yet another bullpen game due to the rotation's extensive injury woes. Snell also threw his first full bullpen session in two months on Tuesday at Petco Park. The two-time Cy Young winner, who will throw another 20 pitches on Friday, has said his arm is now pain free after he was shut down with left shoulder inflammation on April 6. Snell made only two starts this season before going on the injured list. He agreed to a five-year, $182 million contract with the Dodgers last winter.
