Police has yet to confirm the victim's identity, pending post-mortem
Police have reclassified the case as death by reckless or dangerous driving
KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 — The body of a pedestrian who fell into a river after being hit by a car along Jalan Ipoh has been found.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the body was located about 150 metres from the crash site this morning, New Straits Times reported.
'The body has been sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for post-mortem,' he was quoted as saying, adding that the victim's identity is yet unknown.
He said the case has now been reclassified under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
The incident took place at about 11.45am yesterday when a Nissan Sylphy driven by a 39-year-old Bangladeshi man heading from the Batu Muda People's Housing Project lost control of the car near the Kepong roundabout and struck the pedestrian before falling under a bridge and getting caught between concrete structures and iron pipes.
The Nissan Sylphy also collided with the front right side of a Toyota Camry, driven by a 43-year-old Vietnamese woman from the direction of Batu Kentomen.
The multi-agency search was carried out by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall, police, Fire and Rescue Department, and the Civil Defence Force.

Watchdog raps Penang Fisheries Dept, urges disciplinary action over trawler zone breaches

PUTRAJAYA, June 16 — The Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) has found that the Penang Department of Fisheries (DOF) failed to act against the intrusion of trawler boats from Zone B into Zone A waters. Zone A and Zone B refer to designated maritime zones for trawler operations based on distance from the shoreline, with Zone A being closer to the coast and Zone B farther offshore. In a statement today, EAIC said its investigation revealed that the Penang DOF has failed to properly monitor enforcement officers under its jurisdiction. 'Inspections at the Batu Maung enforcement base were only conducted once a year. The management was also found to be unaware of the daily enforcement duties performed by its personnel, as well as operational constraints at the base. 'Penang DOF also failed to ensure that the enforcement logbook entries were properly and completely recorded by the responsible officers,' the commission said. Following its findings, the EAIC recommended that a letter of reprimand be issued to the senior management of Penang DOF involved for ineffective oversight, and disciplinary action be taken against officers who failed to properly record logbook details. It also proposed that the DOF's standard operating procedures (SOPs) for handling complaints, investigations and operations be improved to include video recordings as evidence, and that training be provided to Penang DOF personnel on compliance with SOPs, guidelines, enforcement protocols, operations and licensing procedures. In a separate statement, the EAIC said it has received a complaint alleging that Perak Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) had released detainees along with a vessel found using 'bubu naga', a prohibited fishing gear. 'The investigation, conducted under Subsection 27(4) of the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission Act 2009 (Act 700), found that the alleged misconduct could not be verified. 'As such, the EAIC decided to halt the investigation, and no disciplinary action will be taken against the officers involved,' it said. Nevertheless, in line with Subsection 4(1) of Act 700, the commission has recommended that the MMEA director-general take appropriate improvement measures to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents. — Bernama

Foreigner charged after fatal crash sends pedestrian into river

KUALA LUMPUR: A foreigner whose car struck a pedestrian, causing the victim to fall into a river and drown along Jalan Ipoh towards Bulatan Kepong last Friday, was charged in court today. Kuala Lumpur Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the man was brought to the Traffic Court in Jalan Duta to face a charge under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. "The instruction was issued after the investigation paper was referred to the deputy public prosecutor at 8am today," he said in a statement. "The deputy public prosecutor directed that the individual be charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. "He was taken to the Jalan Duta Traffic Court this morning," he added. Earlier, it was reported that a pedestrian drowned after being knocked into the river by a car that had lost control. The incident, which occurred at 11.45am, involved a Nissan Sylphy driven by the 39-year-old foreign man heading from the People's Housing Project (PPR) Batu Muda. Mohd Zamzuri was reported as saying that preliminary investigations showed a Toyota Camry, driven by a 43-year-old Vietnamese woman from Batu Kentomen, was also involved in the crash.

Public donations for aid allegedly redirected over a decade by NGO leaders to buy crypto, homes, jewellery — MACC probes RM26m abuse

KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has uncovered a suspected misappropriation of approximately RM26 million in public donations by a non-governmental organisation (NGO), believed to have occurred over the past decade. According to Berita Harian (BH), the alleged abuse of funds — which spans from 2015 to 2025 — was discovered following the arrest of five individuals, including the NGO's chairman, secretary, treasurer, finance officer, and another staff member. The arrests were made under Op Serantau, in an operation led by the Selangor MACC, with raids conducted across Selangor, Melaka, and Penang beginning last Thursday. All five suspects are currently under a seven-day remand. Four of them will be held until Wednesday, while the fifth — the chairman — remains in custody until Thursday, following a court order granted in Melaka on June 13. A source familiar with the investigation said the suspects are believed to have siphoned off donations received from the public, using them for personal gain. Their methods allegedly included transferring funds into personal bank accounts and purchasing jewellery, vehicles, property, land, and cryptocurrency. 'The operation's findings point to similar patterns seen in the Aman Palestin case,' the source told BH. The suspects are also believed to have redirected funds intended for humanitarian projects — including surplus money from the construction of wells in Syria — for personal use. Additionally, some of the misappropriated funds were reportedly channelled through the NGO's accounts to provide loans to staff members. MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the arrests when contacted by BH. He said the commission had seized various assets worth more than RM8 million, including over RM1 million in cash, jewellery valued at around RM100,000, approximately RM650,000 in cryptocurrency, and four properties worth more than RM1.4 million. In addition, 14 bank accounts holding close to RM5 million have been frozen pending further investigation. The case is currently being investigated under Section 409 of the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust. Earlier reports indicated that the chairman was also being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009 for abuse of power.
