Spicy 455bhp 3.0-litre plug-in hybrid power
Just £520.53 a month
In the world of big-shot hot SUVs, the Volkswagen Touareg R is often overlooked. On paper it has the best of both worlds – lusty V6 power and sporty styling coupled with (potentially) wallet-pleasing running costs, and yet it's never in the spotlight. However, this deal might change that. Advertisement - Article continues below
Scouring the Auto Express Find a Car service, we found AA Lease is offering the range-topping, £83,000 performance Touareg for just £520.53 a month. Sounds a terrific deal – and it really is – but it's especially bonkers when you realise that this is the cheapest Volkswagen Touareg you can lease right now.
This deal sees the top-spec R undercutting the normally mid-spec Black Edition by a whopping £109.61 a month. Not only are the monthly payments a bargain, but the £6,516.36 initial payment is pretty reasonable, too.
This two-year deal has a mileage cap of 5,000 a year, but this can be revised up to 8,000 per annum for just over £37 extra a month.
While the latest Touareg R isn't as raw and hardcore as some of its predecessors, it's still undeniably a strong sporting proposition, sharing a lot of its make-up with the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below
Under the bonnet lies a different engine from its more prestigious sister, but it's still a throaty 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 petrol. It's hooked up to an electric motor and a 14.3kWh battery pack, giving a combined 455bhp.
Packing such power, you won't be surprised to know it's quick. The 0-62mph sprint takes just 5.1 seconds, and because the R is a plug-in hybrid, there's 30 miles of EV range on offer. Charge the car regularly, and you've got a 455bhp hot SUV that'll cost buttons to run.
Along with the meaty power, the R gets a raft of styling additions to denote its sporting intent, with HD matrix headlights, full leather upholstery, a panoramic roof and air suspension all coming as standard.

British steel production to be classed ‘critical' to national security

British steel production is to be designated as critical to the UK's national security, under plans to secure billions of pounds of orders for new wind farms, rail links and other infrastructure projects. In an attempt to prop up domestic production, ministers are drawing up new rules that would allow public bodies to buy British steel, even if cheaper alternatives are available from abroad. President Trump announced a wave of tariffs during a press conference at the Rose Garden on April 2 BRENDAN SMIALOWSKI/AFP Industry sources have warned that steel prices in the UK have fallen by as much as 10 per cent because foreign steel exporters had diverted products that had been destined for the US to other markets. They warned the situation was likely to become critical next month when the European Union clamps down on steel imports to shield its domestic industry from global oversupply and falling prices.

Liontrust posts 28% drop in pre-tax profits as investors shun London

The pressure on Britain's active fund management industry has fuelled a sharp fall in profits at Liontrust, which also rattled investors by signalling that it would cut its dividend. Shares in the London-listed asset manager closed down 53½p, or 13 per cent, at 358p after it reported a 28 per cent decline in adjusted pre-tax profits to £48.3 million in the 12 months to the end of March as it was hit by clients continuing to pull their funds. Net outflows totalled £4.9 billion during the period in the third consecutive year of withdrawals by Liontrust customers, knocking the assets overseen by the group to £22.6 billion. Like other fund managers that focus on UK equities, Liontrust has suffered in recent years as investors have shied away from the London stock market in favour of more attractive opportunities elsewhere, particularly in the United States. As an active manager that picks and chooses investments, it has also faced stiff competition from cheaper passive funds that simply track indices.

Ex-minister seeks to protect NHS against foreign ownership

A former minister has called on the government to intervene in foreign takeovers of critical NHS infrastructure such as doctors' surgeries and hospitals. Baroness Altmann, the former pensions minister, raised concerns about overseas private equity firms owning NHS buildings and warned of 'wreckage' such as happened in the care home sector with the collapse of Southern Cross in 2011 and Four Seasons Healthcare in 2019. Writing in The Times, she says: 'Private equity firms stripped equity value from care providers, loaded them with unsustainable debt, and pursued aggressive cost-cutting driven by short-term profit maximisation not patient welfare.' Her comments come as KKR and Stonepeak Partners, the US private equity funds, find themselves in a bidding war for Assura, which owns hundreds of doctors' surgeries around the country. As it stands, the board of Assura is recommending a £1.7 billion deal to merge with its rival, Primary Health Properties, instead.
