The day before the match, Athletic Bilbao fans attacked groups of Rangers supporters and two were arrested.

Spain's Permanent Commission of the State Commission against Violence, Racism, Xenophobia, and Intolerance in Sport met this week to discuss the incidents.
And they announced they had punished the two unnamed Bilbao residents for the attack on Rangers fans, which left one hospitalised with a ban on sports stadiums in Spain for one year and a fine of £5,000.
They stated: "Violence in sport has no place in Spain and severe measures have been taken."
Rangers lost the game in April 2-0 under former boss Barry Ferguson.

The Swans remain keen on adding more firepower to their ranks before the close of the transfer window, but have so far been unable to find a breakthrough in their search, having already brought nine players on board this summer. Richard Kone was the subject of an unsuccessful bid, while the club also failed in an attempt to bring Oli McBurnie back to the club on a free transfer. It's understood the club also showed interest in FC Basel's Kevin Carlos and St Gallen's Willem Geubbels in recent weeks, but again both have moved to other clubs. City also saw a loan move for Villarreal's Karl Etta Eyong knocked back earlier in the summer, with the player now likely to be a regular for the La Liga outfit having started and scored on the opening day of the season. Interest in Hammarby's Jusef Erabi is also understood to have been ended, amid suggestions in the Swedish press that the Swans had previously seen a bid rejected. WalesOnline understands two further European options are being assessed, but it's possible their search could rumble on up until the end of the window, despite previous suggestions of an imminent breakthrough. "I don't think one is imminent," Sheehan said when quizzed on the latest situation. "But it's obviously one the club are looking at." The Swans boss does already have three options already on the books, with Wales international Liam Cullen seemingly his first choice as things stand, having started both of the club's opening two games of the season. "When we talk about potential players coming in, the first person I think of potentially is the nine that is playing in Liam Cullen, an absolute tireless worker for the team, somebody who's on my teamsheet more than he's not," Sheehan added. "He's a very, very valuable member that could potentially be more clinical at times. "But in terms of working for the team and what we're about and typifying what we want to be. He's absolutely wonderful. "He's a Welsh international, and (Craig) Bellamy plays him as well, and there's a reason for that. These are good players. "So when we talk about bringing players in and for competition, they have to be better than what we have. "Not just bringing in players that will appease people for two or three months and then six to nine months down the line, think that actually it wasn't the right one. Let's get the right one and it it's not available, we stick with what we have, and then we strengthen again. "That's a big shoutout to Culls really because he's doing such a wonderful job for the team, and he will score goals. I know that. "But in terms of his work ethic, how much he loves the football club, how he shows up, how he is with the detail every day. We're incredibly grateful to have people like him here." And despite clearly wanting another striker through the door, Sheehan admits there's a chance he may have to try and get the best out of those already in the building, with Cullen seemingly at the top of the pecking order - for the time being at least. "With Bobby (Wales), he's a player that's come down from Scotland. He's still a young lad. We gave him a run out against Crawley and obviously the program on how he develops and integrating him into the league. So players have had the opportunity to grab the shirt, and within that, Vipi hurt his toe in pre-season and he had a bit of disruptive pre-season. "He was meant to get more minutes against Lorient, and then against Exeter, so it's not been as consistent as we would have liked. Man Utd targeting three goalkeepers but unknown star could be the answer
Manchester United emerged from their opening game of the new Premier League season showing some overdue promise but were undone by the same old problems. The club have spent almost £200milliion rebuilding their attack with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha starting brightly against Arsenal as Benjamin Sesko made his debut off the bench. United are still in the market for a midfielder before the summer transfer window closes in 12 days. But Altay Bayindir's calamitous error that allowed Riccardo Calafiori to nod home Sunday's winner heightened concern over an issue that threatens to undermine any progress for Ruben Amorim's side this season. In the wake of Sunday's defeat, Amorim defended Bayindir after his error, suggesting the Turkey international had been impeded. Andre Onana, left out of the squad that day, inspired little confidence last season with nine errors leading to goals– at fault in the Europa League final against Tottenham. At 39 years old having not played a competitive game in almost four years, Tom Heaton is not the answer. Messages out of United this week have been there are no plans to sign a new goalkeeper. United have already explored a move for Emiliano Martinez this summer with reports suggesting Amorim personally requested the arrival of the World Cup winner, twice voted the best shop stopper on the planet. With a penchant for delivering on the biggest stages, Martinez certainly has the personality to be the commanding leader in goal United need. In shot-stopping, his distribution and aerial presence, the Aston Villa star has been among the best in the Premier League in recent years with only Jordan Pickford (569) making more top flight saves than Martinez (530) since the Argentine joined Villa in 2020. But judging him solely on the eye test, there appeared to be a decline in his performances last season following on from a sublime 2023-24 campaign with the data supporting it. A save percentage of 67.9 per cent is only good enough for 14th best in the English top flight, declining from 74.4 per cent in 2022-23 when he scooped his first Lev Yashin Trophy. Only four goalkeepers conceded more than the former Arsenal youngster (45) last season. On Sunday, Bayindir was bullied in the United goal with William Saliba putting him under pressure and forcing the error in a relatively straight forward manner. Onana's reluctance to come off his line for crosses has been a constant theme during his struggles and it highlights the need for United to bring in a commanding and dominant threat in the air. In that respect, Martinez could be their man. No other goalkeeper in the Premier League stopped more crosses than the Argentine during the 2024-25 season. If you put aside the huge salary it might take to lure him in, Gianluigi Donnarumma would be the obvious candidate for United. Still just 26 years old, the Italy international is also the very definition of a big-game player for club and country with his string of saves in the knockout stages of last season's Champions League just as important as the magic woven by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Dembele. But there is reason for caution aside from the financials. Despite his huge frame, Donnarumma can struggle with high balls with his crosses stopped percentage last season at 5% a, marginally worse than Onana's and some way short of that of Martinez. The Italian managed just four clean sheets in his 24 Ligue 1 appearances despite PSG's domestic dominance, recording a save percentage of 66.7 which leaves him right down in 15th place compared the rest of the division's shot stoppers. Signing Donnarumma on a huge salary would been in fitting of previous regimes at Old Trafford but perhaps not anymore. Instead of targeting one of Europe's established goalkeepers, an emerging name is perhaps more in line with INEOS' thinking. With that in mind, Senne Lammens could be the answer. More Trending The 23-year-old has drawn comparisons with his countryman Thibaut Courtois and is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers operating outside Europe's top five leagues, still plying his trade in Belgium with Antwerp. Similarly to Martinez, the Belgian would offer United a huge improvement dealing with crosses, boasting near identical stats to the Villa shot stopper in crossing metrics, also outranking the likes of Onana, Alisson Becker, Ederson, Jordan Pickford and Jordan Henderson. Averaging more saves per match than both Martinez and Donnarumma with a huge save percentage of 81.4 per cent, Lammens has excelled across a number of different areas. While Donnarumma and Martinez might be regarded as the penalty saving kings on the grandest stage, the Belgian is building his own fearsome reputation, stopping five spot kicks since the start of last season – more than any other goalkeeper in Europe's top 10 leagues during that period. United have three very viable targets in front of them, all within a fairly modest price range. But they are running out of time to address a problem they cannot afford to let fester any longer. Rio Ferdinand laid into Gianluigi Donnarumma as Man Utd face transfer fight – 'Unacceptable'
Gianluigi Donnarumma has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer, but the Italy international has been on the receiving end of criticism from Rio Ferdinand in the past Rio Ferdinand's scathing criticism of Gianluigi Donnarumma has re-emerged amid the Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper's potential switch to Manchester United this summer. The Red Devils are reportedly keen on snapping up the shot-stopper after a treble-winning campaign with PSG failed to convince manager Luis Enrique to keep him in his plans. While Manchester City have reached personal terms with the Italy international, United have been urged to jump at the opportunity to land his signature with his price tag proving a sticking point for their neighbours. Despite the Italian being hailed as one of the finest goalkeepers on the planet, Ferdinand has previously slammed the United target for one of his Champions League performances. During a quarter-final clash with Barcelona last year, the La Liga giants secured a 3-2 advantage over PSG to take into the return leg at the Camp Nou, with two of those strikes stemming from Donnarumma errors. He was unable to gather a ball whipped into his penalty area, allowing Raphinha to open the scoring. The decisive goal arrived when Donnarumma remained on his line from a corner kick, which let Andreas Christensen head home the match-winner. Ferdinand expressed his frustration on TNT Sports, branding it a "crime" for the star to fail in preventing both strikes. He said at the time: "Highlight the goalkeeper here. In the first half, the goalkeeper makes two mistakes from crosses. I think in his head he's said, 'I'm going to stay on my line no matter what now,' and let the responsibility then fall on the defenders to defend this set piece. "That's in his six-yard box. He's 6'7" or so. That's a crime almost, not coming in your six-yard box and claiming that. It wasn't a ball that was too high. It was there to be attacked, but the impact of the first half mistakes lead to that. That's a player at the top of his game that is having to adjust his approach to a certain set piece because of performance." Despite this previous criticism, Ferdinand has also recently praised Donnarumma ahead of his potential Premier League move. On his YouTube channel, the former United defender hailed the keeper as one of Europe's finest, suggesting PSG's desire to part ways with him is due to the changing nature of goalkeeping in football. Ferdinand said: "Did you see the stuff about Donnarumma? Wow. One of arguably the best goalkeepers in Europe last year, wins a treble. What I'll do is I'll give you the quote from Enrique, which was brutal right? "But I kind of like that. You know where you stand, but I don't think Donnarumma would've loved it. But let's do these quotes anyway. 'Donnarumma is out of the squad as it's my own decision. I am 100 per cent responsible.' "He said, 'I want a different type of goalkeeper, and I made this decision.' Wow. Donnarumma is one of the best goalkeepers in the whole world. Just that little caveat to cap it off. One of the best keepers, but just not my type. Now, we would have never seen this 10 years ago. "If you are the best goalkeeper in the world, the top club who's winning everything at the time never sells you because you're the best goalkeeper in the world. He might be the best goalkeeper in the world in terms of saving the ball and stuff to stop the ball going into the net, but is he good enough with his feet? "I think that is the question, and this is just the ever-evolving kind of identity of a goalkeeper now is very different. I played with so many goalkeepers that could barely reach the halfway line. Couldn't pick anyone out really on a consistent basis. "Some could kick it far, but couldn't really have the direction to pick people out. Nowadays, you've got to have like pinpoint accuracy, short and long, over varying distances to be able to understand how to play through the press. If it's two people, three people, or one player pressing, like what's going on behind that press? "The goalkeepers now have got to see so much, they're part of the 11 now. It used to be 10 players and the keeper; it's very different now. So Donnarumma is living in a different world of goalkeepers, and I bet people like [Gianluigi] Buffon, Edwin van der Sar, [Peter] Schmeichel, the top goalkeepers of yesteryear are sitting there going, 'Wow, not in my day, that would have never have happened.'"
