Jacob Tolliver, Known For His Mesmerizing Piano Style, Releases Randy Travis Cover

Forbes18-07-2025
Singer, composer, and pianist Jacob Tolliver releases his version of "Honky Tonk Side Of Town."
He's a singer, songwriter and performer with a strong social media following, thanks to viral videos showing his rapid-fire approach to playing the piano, in a style similar to the legendary Jerry Lee Lewis.
Jacob Tolliver was just 18 when he got the part to play Lewis in a Las Vegas production of Million Dollar Quartet, a show based on the legendary night Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee famously came together for an impromptu jam session at Sun Studio in Memphis.

When Lewis himself saw a video of Tolliver playing one of his songs, he invited him to Memphis so they could meet in person. It was the start of a special friendship that saw the two men play music and spend a lot of time together. Tolliver even traveled with Lewis on tour for a while. And many have seen the video of Tolliver, front and center, helping Lewis celebrate his 85th birthday.
In recent years, even more so since the passing of Lewis in 2022, Tolliver has worked hard to carve out his own path in music, even while continuing to keep that one-of-a-kind Jerry Lee Lewis style alive.
It helps that Tolliver is a multi-talented artist, musician, and composer.
He's constantly touring, performing, writing, or working on new music. He even has a full album of original music set aside for release sometime in the future.
He also occasionally joins the Randy Travis More Life Tour. The shows features singer James Dupre' performing a host of songs recorded by the country music legend, as well as guest artists doing their version of a Travis song. (Travis can no longer sing following a stroke in 2013 stroke, but he appears on stage with wife, Mary, at every performance.)
When Tolliver takes the stage, he performs 'Honky Tonk Side of Town.' It's a more obscure Randy Travis album cut a lot of fans don't know. It provided Tolliver with a way to honor Travis and reimagine one of his songs, while allowing Tolliver to add his own unique spin.
'When they asked me to be part of the show,' Toliver says, 'I thought, I can't go out and try to sing like Randy, in that deep velvet voice. So, I went through his whole discography. I listened to every sing track on every album, and out of hundreds of songs, I found this one from the 90s. I thought, I could put all of the bells and whistles on this one and really tear it up!'

And that's exactly what he does. It's been so well received people started asking where they could get a copy of Tolliver's version. So, with Travis' blessing, Tolliver went into the studio to cut it.
It turns out a couple of people who were for the original 90s recording, ended back for this one.
'We got Kyle Lehning on board to produce it,' Tolliver says, 'and it took me a while to connect the dots, but I thought, wait a minute, he must have been the producer on the original track. And sure enough he was. Then, we had this legendary session drummer, Paul Leim, in the studio. He's been on so many hits through the years, and he was also there for the original recording, too. You'll see them in the music video. But it was incredible to have Randy, the original producer and the original drummer, all there. And the rest of the band was phenomenal.'
Tolliver says getting to record a Randy Travis song serves as a fantastic, full-circle moment for him.
'When I was three or four years old, I remember watching a Hey Arnold cartoon on Nickelodeon and Randy did a guest spot on an episode where he was the singing voice of one of the characters. He did a song called 'Simple Things' and I asked my mom who was singing, and she said it was Randy Travis. Now, here I am all these years getting to record a Randy song with him involved. And we've also developed a friendship. It's just so special.'
Just like his dynamic, high-energy presence on stage, Tolliver is always on the move. In the past year, he's released two cinematic-type music videos of original music that are a departure from what he's done in the past, with the promise of more to come.
He's enjoying venturing down different creative paths and exploring where the music takes him.
'One thing that bothers me a lot about modern artists is they find something that works and keep beating a dead horse, without trying to find the next sound. I believe you can do that and still remain cohesive. So, when you ask what's next for me, it's had to say because it could be anything.'
Whatever he does next, you can bet it'll be entertaining.
Tolliver has a handful of tour dates currently listed on his website with plans to add more in the weeks and months to come. And his version of 'Honky Tonk Side Of Town' is available now on all streaming platforms.

Sean Kingston jailed

Sean Kingston has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison. The Beautiful Girls hitmaker - whose real name is Kisean Paul Anderson - and his mother, Janice Turner, were found guilty of five counts of wire fraud in March following a federal trial and faced up to 20 years in jail for each charge. But on Friday (15.08.25), Sean apologised in front of Judge David Leibowitz and said he had learned a lesson, and though his attorney asked the 35-year-old star be allowed to leave and surrender at a later date for health reasons, the judge refused and he was immediately taken into custody. His attorney, Zeljka Bozanic, told Entertainment Weekly the musician is taking the situation "as a learning experience". The lawyer said in a statement: "We respect the Court's decision and the judicial process. We are content that the Court did not go with the government's request of five years and sentenced Sean below the sentencing guidelines instead. It is important to note that most of the restitution in this case was paid back, even before these charges were brought. "Sean is taking this as a learning experience and will continue moving forward in a positive direction. We are actively reviewing all available options, including potential appeals, to ensure his rights are fully protected." Janice - who had previously pleaded guilty to bank fraud for stealing $160,000 and served more than a year in prison - was sentenced to five years behind bars last month. The mother and son had denied allegations of falsely claiming they had sent bank transfers for luxury items worth more than $1 million but were found guilty in March. After the verdict was reached, Sean was placed on home detention, though he has to meet bond requirements, including a $200,000 surety bond in cash, as well as putting up a relative's $500,000 house. However, Janice was reminded into federal custody and was taken away by US Marshals as her son cried. He told them: "Protect my mother.' While Sean opted not to testify on his own behalf, his mother did, and the judge explained she was remanded as a flight risk in part due to her testimony. He said Janice - who has similar past convictions - had shown she was the "fixer, the nerve centre" and in control of the fraud scheme but her son's defence depicted him as "a child" with no knowledge of finances. Several alleged victims had claimed to have been swindled out of items including a bulletproof Cadillac, a huge TV and expensive watches, and all items had been seized in a raid on Sean's home. The United States Attorney's Office in the Southern District of Florida, previously explained the rapper and his mother's charges stemmed from their alleged involvement in "a scheme to defraud victim sellers of high-end specialty vehicles, jewellery, and other goods purchased by the defendants through the use of fraudulent documents." The office went on to state the pair "unjustly enriched themselves by falsely representing that they had executed bank wire or other monetary payment transfers as payment for vehicles, jewellery, and other goods purchased by the defendants, when in fact no such bank wire or other monetary payment transfers had been executed by the purported banks, and thereafter the defendants retained or attempted to retain the vehicles, jewellery and other goods despite non-payment. Through the execution of this scheme, the defendants obtained in excess of $1 million in property." The pair were accused of having stolen almost $500,000 in jewellery, more than $200,000 from Bank of America, more than $100,000 from First Republic Bank, $160,000 from a Cadillac Escalade dealer and $86,000 from a maker of customised beds. At the time of his arrest last year, the musician was serving two years probation for trafficking stolen property.

Friday Music Guide: New Music From Cardi B, Chance The Rapper, Dijon and More

Billboard's Friday Music Guide serves as a handy guide to this Friday's most essential releases — the key music that everyone will be talking about today, and that will be dominating playlists this weekend and beyond. This week, Cardi B has a message for the competition, Chance The Rapper comes full circle and Dijon blows up. Check out all of this week's picks below: More from Billboard Boogie in Central Park This Fall With Lane 8, Porter Robinson, Nora En Pure & More Taylor Swift's Podcast Debut Climbs to 'New Heights' by Setting This YouTube Record Pooh Shiesty Shares Update From Prison: 'The Support and Love I Received on This Roller Coaster Is Unmatched' Cardi B, 'Imaginary Playerz' 'Fixin' y'all mouth to talk fashion with me / I'm the one who showed these girls what fashion could be,' Cardi B spits near the end of 'Imaginary Playerz,' a viper strike against those who doubted her longevity and other women in hip-hop trying to come for her crown. With Cardi's long-awaited sophomore album just weeks away, this single is a timely reminder of her dominant wordplay and cutthroat approach; the expectations are officially sky-high. Chance The Rapper, Chance The Rapper hit the mainstream with the force of a freight train in the mid-2010s, and then his 2019 album, The Big Day, zapped his momentum; Star Line, the long-awaited follow-up, boasts plenty of A-list guest stars — Lil Wayne, Young Thug and Jazmine Sullivan among them — but also serves as a back-to-basics project from an artist who blew up thanks to fiercely beloved mixtapes, combining personal reinvention with scrappy artistry. Dijon, In the four years since Dijon released debut album Absolutely in 2021, his influence in modern R&B (and popular music in general) has grown by leaps and bounds — and with follow-up full-length Baby, he returns with a lush, lo-fi set of rhythmic gems, to a much bigger audience waiting for them, and now has the opportunity to position himself as a full-blown commercial force. Kaytranada, A press release for Ain't No Damn Way! describes the project as 'an intentional return to Kaytranada's dance music roots' — which, if you like to move whatsoever, is pretty damn exciting, considering that the producer is absolutely elite when it comes to cooking up dance floor-fillers. Opener 'Space Invader' sets the euphoric tone immediately, and by 'Target Joint' in the fourth slot, your shoulders will be exhausted from wiggling too hard. Jordan Davis, Country star Jordan Davis' catalog contains a reliability that has made him into a singer-songwriter with a dedicated Nashville fan base, and on Learn the Hard Way, he continues his streak of celebrating the simple pleasures of life with mid-tempo tracks built around his steady tone and shrugging off too much production flash (although the occasional guest star, Carly Pearce and Marcus King, does drop by). Olivia Dean, 'Man I Need' Anyone paying attention to Olivia Dean's recent string of singles understands why anticipation keeps ratcheting up for the London singer-songwriter's sophomore album, The Art of Loving: 'Man I Need' once again demonstrates her natural gift for immediate melodies, but her modern riff on classic rhythmic pop is snappier than ever, to the point where you'll be humming along midway through your first listen. Editor's Pick: Conan Gray, Wishbone is Conan Gray's fourth studio album, and sounds like the one he's been working toward his entire career: once again working with Dan Nigro but handling much of the songwriting on his own, the pop artist fully arrives with a mix of hushed confessionals and brash arena-fillers, with both styles boasting the evocative lyricism that's made him a star. Best of Billboard Chart Rewind: In 1989, New Kids on the Block Were 'Hangin' Tough' at No. 1 Janet Jackson's Biggest Billboard Hot 100 Hits H.E.R. & Chris Brown 'Come Through' to No. 1 on Adult R&B Airplay Chart Solve the daily Crossword
