Our Unwritten Seoul – K-drama Episode 8 Recap & Review

The Review Geek7 hours ago

An Unconventional Whole
Episode 8 of Our Unwritten Seoul begins with a look at Ho-su's past. He was never fully happy with Bun-hong being part of their family, given he was always so close with his father.
After the death of his mother, the 'three eyes' in his family became two, and it upset the equilibrium of their group. When Bun-hong ended up as his step-mum, Ho-su wasn't particularly happy, wishing it could go back to 'two eyes' once again.
Ho-su and his father wind up in a car accident not long after, explaining Ho-su's injuries. He moved in to this house with Bun-hong, opposite the twins, and did his best to seem fine on the outside. He didn't want to seem like a burden to her and tried to sail through without causing drama.
Back in the present, Ho-su and Mi-ji are officially seeing each other but things are awkward between them. Mi-ji heads back to Seoul for the time being while Mi-rae stalls and learns from her mum that having one unemployed daughter 'is enough'. This doesn't help her case for quitting her job!
Mi-rae shows up at the strawberry farm and winds up with a big plan about helping his farm to thrive. In return, he offers to bring her out on a stargazing expedition that night. It's a nice moment and the pair certainly grow closer during this time.
Ro-sa is discharged and offered to enrol in the Adult Guardianship program. She doesn't know who else to ring so she calls Ho-su. Unfortunately, Chung-gu shows up and questions Ro-sa about Sang-wol.
He gives her an ultimatum to sell her restaurant to the company, promising to bring up Sang-wol again before stirring the pot further. He explains his ties to Ho-su, calling him one of his 'favourite junior colleagues'. Ro-sa, as a result, is frosty toward Ho-su.
Ok-hui's behaviour with the twins though is the complete opposite to Bun-hong and Ho-su. The pair over-indulge and go over the top with their affection, and it's clear there's an undercurrent of uncomfortableness that's never fully been addressed. Bun-hong tries to compensate for the void in their life, while Ho-su wants her to live freely without his 'burden'.
Further flashbacks do help to flesh out this awkwardness. On the anniversary of the ancestral rites for his mum and dad, Ho-su was hurt and saw this as performative. He called out Bun-hong for this and pushed her away, encouraging her to leave him alone. But then when she did leave the house one night, having got the wrong bus, he realized how alone he actually is.
As for Bun-hong, the reason for her delay was actually because she learned her mum was in hospital. Her sister, unfortunately, completely snubbed her and refused to help, leaving her in an unenviable position. Kicked out of one family and struggling to fit into another; Bun-hong ended up in an impossible position.
Interestingly, this is also the first time that a young Mi-ji wound up seeing how vulnerable Ho-su actually was.
Mi-ji and Ho-su's ties are very different now though and they awkwardly navigate their newfound romance. The pair hang out and while Ho-su is happy to call her his girlfriend, Mi-ji lies and pretends to be Mi-rae when a couple of Ho-su's old work friends show up.
Mi-ji explains after that she didn't want to be an embarrassment to him but this only feeds into what he said earlier about being a burden, so they cut their day short.
Mi-ji bemoans how she's ruined the day but things get worse at work when Mi-ji notices that a returning Park Sang-yeong looks exactly like her father.
This now puts Mi-rae's words before about their father into more perspective, and Mi-ji begins spiralling. After composing herself, she speaks to Park at lunch about the HQ project. He wants one of them to stop working on this (namely Sang-yeon himself) so it'll give people less reason to gossip. He promises to take care of the repercussions and do what he can to help her.
Mi-ji appreciates the sentiment but instead decides that she's going to drop out and wants him to make sure that she doesn't get penalized in any way. He also has a gift for her too, which happens to be a bookmark.
To make things even more awkward, this guy also has a daughter called Mi-rae too. Park Sang-yeong is in the pocket of senior management though, and they scheme between Mi-ji's back that night.
Park explains that she won't be a problem anymore now that she's dropped out (clearly using reverse psychology with her) and they contemplate moving her out to the Childal Branch 'before she causes trouble'. They suss that the identical twins may have switched and intend to test them later on in the episode.
That night, after all the awkwardness, Mi-ji rings her sister and questions her about Park. She demands to know her side of the story. Mi-rae has kept this a secret because she obviously misses their father so much, and Mi-ji feels the exact same way. They've both kept this pain from each other and they break down crying on the phone together.
At work, Tae-i is surprised that Mi-ji has dropped out of the HQ Project. Given she and Mi-rae are about to switch back again, she tells him to be nicer to her (ie. Mi-rae) in the future.
Ok-hui shows up to see Bun-hong and helps wash her hair. Midway through, Bun-hong admits that she's been trying to act like Ho-su's mum all this time and only realized what a bad impression she's done until now. Ok-hui is surprisingly encouraging to her, pointing out what a great family they have.
Meanwhile, Ho-su clears the air with Mi-ji and explains he just wanted them to have a normal date and it wound being really weird and awkward. He hands over a guidebook and instead of a handshake, the pair wind up hugging.
Mi-rae shows up to see Se-jin and they aren't quite on the same wavelength. The thing is, Se-jin was earlier visited by Director Yoon and apparently there are plans for someone taking over for him as he's not sure he'll be able to finish this year's farming.
Apparently he's thinking about leaving to go back to the States to work again. However, Mi-rae hears this through someone else so it's unclear if that's actually true or not.
That night, Tae-i shows up and confronts Mi-ji. He arrives outside her house and explains that he's Kim Su-yeon's brother. She's the Senior Specialist who left the company.
Back at work, things take a horrible turn when the senior management confront Mi-ji about her identity and encourage her to scan her fingerprint to enter the data processing room, leaving things on a tenuous cliffhanger.
The Episode Review
Our Unwritten Seoul closes out this weekend's double-bill with a big episode that ends things on a huge cliffhanger. It's unclear whether Mi-ji will be able to get out of this in one piece, and what the repercussions could be if she's outed as the wrong twin.
The situation at work is made that much more complicated by the revealed about Park Sang-yeong and the scheming between the upper-management too. It's clear he's not a nice person and very much forcing Mi-rae (when she was working there) to keep her head down and not make any trouble. Of course, Mi-ji is not that same twin, and she may have unintentionally caused trouble for her sister at work.
The ties between Ho-su and Mi-ji are at least a little better and cleared up somewhat by the end of the episode, while the drama involving Bun-hong and Ok-hui takes an unexpected turn when the latter is actually nice to her neighbour.
As for Mi-rae, we've got more misunderstandings when it comes to the strawberry farm and I can't help but feel this is just going to be resolved by Se-jin explaining it's only a temporary gig rather than a permanent position.
Either way though, the ending certainly leaves things on a big cliffhanger and we'll have to wait and see where this one goes next week.

Meghan shares video of Harry and their children on Father's Day

The Duke of Sussex was celebrated as 'the best' in a Father's Day montage shared by his wife, Meghan, on Instagram. The reel, posted on Sunday night, gave an insight into Prince Harry's family life in California and the special moments he has shared with his children. The videos included Harry reading with a baby Prince Archie, family beach days and time spent in the garden. Harry was seen dancing with Archie, six, and teaching him how to ride a bike, as well as horsing around with his children in one clip, with Jason Mraz's acoustic version of Have It All as the soundtrack. The Duke looked the devoted father as footage of car rides and times on a swing with Archie and Princess Lilibet, four, were shared. The Duchess of Sussex, 43, wrote on Instagram: 'The best. Happy Father's Day to our favourite guy.' The more close-up images in the post suggest a departure from the Duchess's usual rule of only showing the children from the back in order to preserve their privacy. In the latest post, the children's faces are shown in full in older photographs and videos of them as infants. Only the backs of the the Prince and Princess's heads feature in the more recent footage. The Duchess has been active on Instagram in recent weeks, sharing more private family moments than ever before. Marking Lilibet's fourth birthday on June 4, she posted a series of photographs of intimate moments from her daughter's life as well as video of her with the Duke and their children at Disneyland. One post included black and white portraits of Meghan holding the infant Princess, as well as a more recent image of the pair hugging on a beach. A throwback video posted on the Princess's birthday showed the Duchess twerking while pregnant as Prince Harry danced around her in a hospital room. Another post featured tender moments between Prince Harry and 'Daddy's little girl and favourite adventurer'. 'The sweetest bond to watch unfold,' the Duchess wrote below photographs which included one of Harry cradling his newborn daughter.

Jennifer Garner pays loving tribute to ex-husband Ben Affleck on Father's Day with touching photo of the doting dad

Jennifer Garner paid a loving Father's Day tribute to her ex-husband Ben Affleck with a touching throwback photo of the doting dad. The actress, 53, who shares three children with Affleck, shared a picture of the actor snuggled up with one of their kids. It's unclear which one of their three children the baby is, yet the child looked oh-so adorable slumbering upon their father's chest. Affleck rested on a couch as he held his newborn baby with a single hand. 'Happy Father's Day to 3 people's favorite landing spot,' Garner wrote in the snap. Garner also shared a video paying tribute to her own father, the late William John Garner. The tender footage, which was set to the Layup song Who You Share It With, showed Jennifer and her father - who passed last year at age 85 - taking a peaceful stroll by a farm. 'Being fathered by someone who loves being a dad is a gift; my sisters and I know this and (lucky for us) all of our kids do, too,' she wrote in the video. 'Happy Father's Day to the Dads, no matter where you are. To the uncles and grandfathers and father figures, too. We love you.' Garner was raised in West Virginia by William - a chemical engineer - as well as mother Patricia, and has two sisters named Melissa and Susannah. Jennifer and Ben, who were married from 2005 to 2018, have three children together - Violet, 19, Fin, 16, and Samuel, 13. In the years since their shock split, both have moved on romantically, with Affleck even tying the knot with former flame Jennifer Lopez, whom he has since divorced. Jennifer, meanwhile, has been dating businessman John Miller on-off since 2018. In March, however, Garner and Affleck sparked reconciliation rumors after the actor was seen giving her an embrace whilst paintballing with their children. Daily Mail later learned Garner is 'deathly afraid of falling back in love' with the actor, with a source saying she still has 'trust issues' with Affleck following affair rumors with their children's nanny, Christine Ouzounian, now 37, a decade ago. 'She loves Ben but is worried that he will crush her all over again,' the source said. 'She doesn't want to heal another broken heart because it is just too much drama, plus she does not want their kids to see round two of their mom in a bad place with their dad. 'So much could go wrong if they reunite.' The photos of Affleck tenderly embracing his ex-wife also resulted in Garner's boyfriend John feeling a bit bothered about their 'touchy-feely' behavior, sources claimed. 'It would get to anyone, but this is nothing new,' the insider said. 'Ben and Jen have a unique relationship, especially for exes.' After the paintball outing, confirmed that Garner and Miller were still going strong, with a source spotting them looking cozy on a date night. The couple were seen 'holding hands and kissing' and being 'very cute with one another' as they strolled through the Brentwood Country Mart in mid-March, after the hugging event. The PDA-filled outing took place in the evening, according to the eyewitness. 'They are still going strong and appear to be doing really well,' the source shared. 'They looked happy and at ease, like a married couple that is thriving. They laughed and smiled at each other. Very cute.' In a recent update of Garner and Miller's relationship, Us Weekly reported that John is now living with the Alias actress 'part time.' 'John is basically living with Jennifer,' a source told the publication in April, noting it was only 'part time.' The site also claimed he moved out of his Los Angeles home after the wildfires ravaged several neighborhoods in the Southern California city, and he has yet to find a new pad. 'He has an office in L.A. and splits his time between staying there and at Jennifer's home,' the source said. 'But he's been staying with Jennifer more often [and] doesn't want to impose, so he's looking for his own place… [and] deciding whether he'll rent or buy.' Garner and Affleck have remained on good terms since calling it quits as they raise their children together. Affleck recently praised Garner as a great 'co-parent' during a recent interview with GQ. 'I'm really lucky that I have a really good co-parent and partner in Jennifer Garner, the kids' mom, who's wonderful and great and we work together well,' Affleck told the outlet.

Lara Worthington shares touching tribute to husband Sam alongside intimate gallery of family photos

Lara Worthington has shared a touching tribute to husband Sam Worthington. The glamorous stay-at-home mother celebrated the Avatar star on Father's Day, held on June 15 in the US, by sharing a gallery of rarely seen family photos to Instagram. In the carousel, Sam looked every inch the doting father to their three children, showing a softer side to the notoriously private actor. In one frame, the 48-year-old is seen smiling for the camera while horsing around with his sons in a swimming pool. In another frame, Sam is pictured tenderly nursing one of his sons on a private jet while playfully sucking on a dummy. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral The third image sees Sam shirtless, holding one of their newborns against his bare chest. Lara captioned the images simply, writing, 'Happy Father's Day' across all three. Lara and Sam began dating in 2013 and married the following year. The model previously told The Daily Telegraph that the couple are enjoying growing old together. 'We've only got each other. Sam and I are a good team. We're both Australians and we have the same values. We come at our children as a team... I think that's really important,' she said. Lara went on to say that she and her family are 'all very close' and that she isn't too strict a parent. 'They always make me feel so good, especially Sam. I don't want that to ever go; I hope it doesn't,' she said. 'But being able to be a mum and to work definitely stems from your partner. Sam and I are on the same page, so I feel like he's "got me" when I'm working and vice versa.' Sam and Lara currently split their time between Sydney and New York. Last year, the Avatar star revealed he had no plans for a permanent move Down Under any time soon. Speaking to GQ Australia, Sam said that he owed 'everything' to his adopted homeland. 'No. I like America,' Sam said when asked if a move was in the couple's future. 'America has given me everything and I've been here for 20-odd years. There's anonymity but there's also a real sense of community which is very cool.' Sam added he was also enamoured by New York - a place where his acting is not always the first topic of conversation. They share three sons - Rocket, Racer and River.
