Brec Bassinger shares favourite death sequence in Final Destination franchise

India Today13-05-2025

Fifteen years after the last chapter closed, Death has found a new way back. 'Final Destination: Bloodlines', the sixth instalment in the beloved supernatural horror franchise, arrives with a chilling premise and a fresh cast — including 'Stargirl' alum Brec Bassinger, who promises this time, 'the fear cuts a little deeper.'Brec calls her casting in the film quite 'surreal,' in an interview with India Today Digital. 'I've done a lot of different things, but this film and franchise in particular — it's like my generation grew up watching it,' Brec tells us. 'My peers are all so excited about it. I have two older brothers who are dying to go see the movie and have watched all of them, so to get to be a part of something that people want to go see in theatres is so exciting to me.'advertisementDirected by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B Stein, with a screenplay by Guy Busick and Lori Evans Taylor from a story developed alongside 'Spider-Man: Homecoming's' Jon Watts, 'Bloodlines' is a direct sequel to 2009's 'The Final Destination'. This time, the film traces a premonition passed down generations, starting in 1968, with a college student (played by Kaitlyn Santa Juana) discovering her grandmother once escaped death during a tower collapse. The chilling twist? Her entire bloodline was never supposed to exist.
Bassinger plays a key role in this cursed family tree, caught in a web of inevitable doom. But despite being a long-time fan of the series, she wasn't quite prepared for the sheer scale of the production. 'I was not prepared or did not know how big the production was,' she recalls. 'Our sets were massive. They built a whole skyview restaurant on a soundstage. I remember just walking in and seeing the size and grandness of the sets — I had never experienced that before.'advertisementThough 'Final Destination' films are known for their creative, chain-reaction deaths, Bassinger says the fear in this one is more grounded — precisely because it hinges on the universal, inescapable truth of mortality.'That's the biggest draw of fear with this particular franchise,' she says. 'A lot of horror films are like, 'Ah, ghosts, they're not going to mess with me.' But Death is something we can't cheat. We can't escape it. So, it's hard to disconnect from the fear this movie brings.'She still remembers the one death scene from the franchise that left an indellible impression. 'The gymnastics scene,' she says without hesitation. 'I've had clips of that pop up on my TikTok and Instagram. I guess it's because I watched it once all the way through, so now it pops up all the time. And every time I see it, I'm like 'ugh', it's scarred me.'Filming 'Bloodlines' came with its own high-stakes moments too. 'In the film it's half a second. You blink, you miss it,' she says. 'But on set, it was so scary to me. They blow fire at this guy who's already on fire, and I had to duck behind the bar. I was like, what if I duck at the wrong time? And they were like, 'Just don't duck at the wrong time.' So, I'm no longer acting — I'm genuinely just scared for my life.'advertisementShe adds, 'With the fire stuff, we only wanted to do one take because they were actually setting people on fire. I felt this pressure to get it perfect — not only to not get burnt, but also because this guy was having to be set on fire. So, I'm really proud of that moment.'When asked who she'd want to come back to as if she had to be reborn in the 'Final Destination' universe, she immediately responds, 'Totally biased, but I'm gonna say Ali Larter. Just because I think she's such a boss, cool woman. So, I choose her.'With a legacy cast that includes Tony Todd, and a fresh cast led by Santa Juana, Teo Briones, Owen Patrick Joyner, and Richard Harmon, 'Final Destination: Bloodlines' reboots the franchise with emotional depth, high-concept horror, and plenty of spectacles.Must Watch

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls: When can you expect the 4v4 tag team fighter to go live?

Sony's latest State of Play showcase has revealed the most unexpected. While rumours have swirled for years about a stage fighter game from Marvel, few expected Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Soul from Arc System Works, the masters behind Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball FighterZ. Even more shocking? This time, it's not Capcom holding the reins. ALSO READ| PlayStation 5's lifespan was accidentally revealed: Here's how long you have left before PS6 comes in Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is slated for release in 2026 on PlayStation 5 and PC, but the exact dates are not confirmed yet. Unlike the classic Marvel vs. Capcom series, Tōkon will be more welcoming, like the Marvel Rivals. 'From the beginning, we aimed to make MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls a title that could be enjoyed by a wide variety of players,' said Kazuto 'Pachi' Sekine, Director/Battle Director at Arc System Works. 'Generally, a team VS fighting game requires the player to learn multiple characters, but for MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, you only need to master one character in order to play the game.' 'We have designed the mechanics in such a way that you can perform a variety of actions with either traditional fighting game inputs or simple inputs. With the press of a few buttons, multiple characters can appear on screen to provide backup or attack together—creating a new and exciting team VS battle experience,' he added. 'The inspiration for working on this project really came from a place of pure fandom, and wanting to say, 'Why isn't PlayStation in this space?'' said Reed Baird, Senior Producer at PlayStation Studios XDEV, per PlayStation Blog. 'So PlayStation approached us with this vision to bring Marvel back to the forefront of the tag fighting genre. And that got us really excited, because we had worked with them before on successful stuff like the Marvel's Spider-Man franchise with Insomniac,' Michael Francisco, Sr. Product Development Manager at Marvel Games, echoed the same. Thug Life banned in Karnataka - what does it mean for film's box office

Kamal Haasan's 'Thug Life', Tamil cinema's next big offering, is gearing up for a grand release on June 5. The film has been making noise across the country, but for all the wrong reasons. At the audio launch of the Mani Ratnam directorial, the actor said 'Kannada was born out of Tamil', which snowballed into a controversy around language. This resulted in the film's ban in just a few hours to go for the film's release, will this move by producer Kamal Haasan affect the box office prospects? India Today Digital exclusively spoke to trade experts to weigh in on the film's box office KARNATAKA RELEASE - WHAT DOES IT MEAN?The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) said that they would stand in solidarity with the pro-Kannada groups protesting against Kamal Haasan and 'Thug Life', and imposed a ban. They also demanded Haasan's apology. Be it in a letter addressed to KFCC President, Mr Narasimhalu, or the High Court judge, the actor remained defiant. While it was a courageous decision to stall the release of 'Thug Life' in Karnataka, trade experts predict that the decision will affect the film. Speaking exclusively to India Today Digital, trade analyst Ramesh Bala, said, "'Thug Life' is likely to incur a loss of nearly Rs 20 to Rs 25 crore in Karnataka. Films like Rajinikanth's 'Jailer' and Thalapathi Vijay's 'Leo' did Rs 40-50 crore in the state. Even an average performing Tamil film will rake in Rs 20-25 crore. Hence, the film will lose that contribution. " advertisementBala also acknowledged that 'Thug Life's' advance booking kicked off on a soft note. "The Mani Ratnam-Kamal Haasan combo will attract people to the theatres. However, word of mouth will play a huge role in making 'Thug Life' a super hit," he trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai predicted a minimum of Rs 10-12 crore loss in revenue because of the ban in Karnataka. "The ban in Karnataka will affect the revenue of the film. Tamil films do have a solid market in Karnataka, hence this move might cause a small dent in the box office numbers."Bala raised an important point: "For many leading stars in Tamil cinema, Karnataka is the second-biggest market in Tamil Nadu. Theatres are more in number in Bengaluru and the Tamil population is more in the state as well. This is one of the reasons why Tamil films run well at the box office."WILL 'THUG LIFE' MATCH THE MAGIC OF 'VIKRAM'?Kamal Haasan's 'Vikram', directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, scripted history by earning over Rs 430 crore at the box office worldwide. Will 'Thug Life', which brings together an ensemble cast including Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan, Trisha Krishnan, Joju George and others, be able to beat 'Vikram'?advertisement"On paper, yes," said Ramesh Bala, adding, "With the star cast and the reunion of Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam, the film has great potential. Further, fans are expecting to see yet another 'Nayakan' from the duo. So, it has ticked all parameters to strike big. But, everything depends on word of mouth. 'Vikram' had a great word of mouth."Sreedhar Pillai said that 'Thug Life' will have a bumper opening at the box office since there was no opposition at the box office. "In Tamil Nadu, it will collect Rs 20-25 crore. "Uniformly, the shows in India will begin at 9 am with early morning shows in US and Dubai," he stated. Calling Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam urban legends, Pillai said, "In the US, it will easily make $1 million. In Tamil Nadu, the majority of the collection will depend on 3Cs - Chennai, Coimbatore and Chengalpet. These are the strong areas and if the word of mouth is good, then there's no stopping 'Thug Life'," he Bala predicted Rs 40 to Rs 50 crore in India, with Rs 75 crore worldwide. "There is expectation that it will have the 'Nayakan' magic. Hopefully, if everything comes together, then 'Thug Life' will soar higher," he TRUMP'S 100% TARIFF AND SLASH IN TN LOCAL BODY TAX AFFECT THE FILM?The US President, Donald Trump, announced a 100 per cent tariff on foreign film production in the country. 'Thug Life', which has kickstarted its pre-sales on a promising note, could be at the receiving said that the rule isn't operational yet. "It shouldn't affect 'Thug Life' yet. Even if it is, it shouldn't affect the gross collection," he the Tamil Nadu government slashed Local Body Entertainment Tax (LBET) from 8.6 per cent to 4 per cent. Ramesh Bala remarked, "Some theatres are passing this cut to the audience, which means there will be a small cut. However, some theatres are keeping the base price of the ticket to Rs 190 crore and taking the tax cut while paying the government. Because of LBET cut, the film might collect be Rs 1-2 crore less than before."'Thug Life' is poised to set a strong opening compared to Haasan's last release, 'Indian 2'. If the film manages to secure positive word of mouth, then 'Thug Life' will create InMust Watch
