Bruno Fernandes reveals four reasons for staying at Man Utd after £300m offer
Manchester United were handed a major boost after Bruno Fernandes announced he had declined a huge move to Saudi Arabia this summer as the Portuguese playmaker insisted he wanted to stay at the top level
Bruno Fernandes has made his reasons clear for wanting to stay at Manchester United and snub a lucrative move to Al-Hilal this summer. The United skipper looked certain to move to Saudi Arabia after reports Al-Hilal were ready to pay a £300million package to secure his signature.
United would have collected a £100m transfer fee, with Bruno Fernandes being handed an eye-watering contract worth around £200m in a move that would see him join up with countrymen Joao Cancelo and Ruben Neves.
But Fernandes released a statement on Tuesday night explaining primarily that he wants to continue playing at the highest level possible in Europe and fully believes he is capable of doing so.
'It would have been an easy move," he said. "I had Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo there, two people I have a great friendship with. But I want to stay at the highest level, play in big competitions, because I still feel capable."
Another factor was Ruben Amorim wanting him to stay at Old Trafford. The coach has always maintained he did not want to let his captain leave and hoped the Portugal international would spearhead the team's revival under his leadership.
Speaking after their post-season tour in Asia, he said: "I think he wants to stay. He is saying no to a lot of things but he chose that he wants to win. I think he's really good and he needs to be on the best league in the world."
United's support of Fernandes also helped his decision. The club hierarchy were relaxed about his future either way and although they missed out on a huge payday that would have eased their financial situation, having Fernandes on board will be a huge boost to their hopes of returning to for next season.
The 30-year-old also cited his family as a major reason for him snubbing Saudi interest. He did not want to uproot his family from their settled life in Manchester and force a culture change in the Middle East. His wife Ana Pinho is said to have been crucial in the decision to stay.
Fernandes explained: "I spoke with my family to understand if that was what I wanted for my future,' Fernandes said ahead of Portugal's Nations League semi-final against Germany tonight.
"It was actually my wife who asked me — I never said yes or no. She put my professional priorities ahead of everything else."
Now that he has clarified his position, Amorim will hope to have him on board for his rebuild of the team that has already seen him sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves, while Bryan Mbeumo is expected to join from Brentford imminently.

Chelsea hold Mohammed Kudus swap deal talks as separate winger bid considered
There have been loose discussions in the past few days between West Ham and Chelsea over Ghana international attacker Mohammed Kudus West Ham have rebuffed the chance to sign multiple Chelsea players as part of a potential swap deal for Mohammed Kudus. The 24-year-old Hammers attacker has three separate release clauses written into his current contract at the London Stadium but they're only active for the first 10 days of July. The buy-out clauses are set at £80million for European clubs, £85m for fellow Premier League sides and a whopping £120m for Saudi Pro League teams. Beyond that, West Ham are thought to be open to offers for the Ghana international, who is under contract until 2028 but the Irons do also have a 12-month extension option. In the past few days, Graham Potter's side are understood to have snubbed the chance to trade Kudus in a multi-player package deal with Chelsea. It's believed the West Ham hierarchy would, however, consider straight-cash proposals even though internally, Kudus is regarded as one of the club's best players. West Ham have previously held an interest in the likes of defender Trevoh Chalobah, Borussia Dortmund loanee Carney Chukwuemeka, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Armando Broja but on this occasion, they were reluctant to negotiate. LIV Golf stars give their true thoughts about Phil Mickelson's behaviour
Phil Mickelson's HyFlyers GC team, consisting of Cameron Tringale, Brendan Steele and Andy Ogletree, all spoke to the media ahead of LIV Golf's return in Virginia When it comes to Phil Mickelson, you would be hard pressed to find anybody who has a negative opinion of him. The 54-year-old was at the centre of admiration as his LIV Golf team-mates heaped praise on his incredible career and enduring thirst for knowledge. During a press event for the upcoming Saudi-backed series in Virginia, Mickelson's HyFlyers GC squad waxed lyrical about him. His team members, including Cameron Tringale, Brendan Steele and Andy Ogletree, all stepped up to the mic to speak with media representatives. Questions naturally gravitated towards six-time major winner Mickelson, particularly after he hinted that the upcoming US Open could be his last at Oakmont Country Club, a venue where he's notoriously finished as a runner-up six times. Joaquin Neimann, who captains Torque GC, didn't hold back in lauding Mickelson's relentless drive for self-improvement despite an already monumental career. "He wants to learn," the Chilean golf star said. "He has a lot of information between his church book at the Masters. He was making me hit putts from all over the place, 'know this, remember this'. I know he's that way and he works that way, and he thinks that he will get better that way." When asked to evaluate the legacy of 'Lefty', Mickelson's team-mates Steele, Tringale and Ogletree paid a heartfelt tribute to their captain, unanimously praising his work ethic, selflessness and generosity. Steele, 42, sang Mickelson's praises, saying: "From the first time that I met him through to this very day, it's really incredible. It's infectious. He's always helped me a ton on and off the golf course. "I just never see the guy slow down. He is just an incredible player. The longevity that he's had, how strong he is still, how far he hits it, how hard he works. Everything that he does still is really incredible. Just a model for me to follow after." Tringale, 37, echoed Steele's sentiments, saying: "I think we all have tremendous respect for Phil. With what he's done in the game, and I can say personally just from the last couple years, off the golf course. "Phil is one of the best people I know. He's selfless. When you interact with him, it's meaningful. I think it's authentic. "I think the way people feel, the way I feel when I leave an engagement with Phil is always better. I think that's something a lot of people don't know unless they've been lucky enough to have an encounter with Phil." At the age of 27, Ogletree couldn't be more elated about having the chance to tap into Mickelson's wisdom. The young American golfer expressed his immense appreciation for Mickelson's mentorship, saying: "Getting to know Phil personally has been an amazing experience. "There's not a time that goes by where he's not reaching out and asking how everything is going. He's very involved, as involved as we want him to be with any question that we might ask. "I feel very comfortable asking Phil anything from golf to life to anything, and he's been very generous with his time and helping me with my swing and with my short game and with anything that I might want to ask him. "For that, I'm just truly grateful. To be able to pick the brain of one of the greatest of all time is a really cool thing to be able to do."
