Audiences were terrified of logging trucks after watching "Final Destination 2." Now, thanks to " Final Destination: Bloodlines," they'll be afraid of MRI machines, too.
Richard Harmon, the actor whose character meets his grizzly end in the MRI scene, told Business Insider that he masterminded its most eye-opening moment.
The new movie, which is out now, follows Stefani (Kaitlyn Santa Juana), a college student who dreams of her grandmother (who is alive) dying in a skyscraper accident in 1968.
She realizes that her family wasn't meant to exist, and that they're being hunted by Death itself.
Richard Harmon plays Erik, Stefani's cousin, a tattooist and piercer who is skeptical about the deaths plaguing his family. Toward the end of the film, Erik finally dies when an MRI machine is accidentally turned to the highest setting, ripping out all of his body piercings — including one on his penis.
Ahead of the film's release, Harmon told BI it was his idea for the character to have his penis pierced.
"Looking at this character and the way that he's tattooed and the way that he's pierced, I said 'there's another piercing, you know,' and they're like, 'What do you mean?' 'I think you know exactly what I mean,'" Harmon said.
He added: "Then both of our directors said, 'We actually had that thought,' and I said, 'Well why aren't we doing it?'
"We discussed it, and then we put it in on the day."
Craig Perry, who has produced every "Final Destination" movie, explained to BI in a separate interview that the MRI scene works so well because: "that's something that people understand, and there's such an unbelievable rich vein of danger in that machine and what it can do, and if you're not careful about metal objects around it."
Perry added: "This is a perfect opportunity for us to put some characters in a circumstance where there's a rising level of magnetism and how it starts to slowly impact the world around them, until it starts impacting the world inside of them."
Harmon assured horror movie fans that incidents like the one in "Final Destination: Bloodlines" are extremely rare, but had some important advice: "Don't let our movie tell you not to go get an MRI. The chances of what happened in that scene are very slim… Just maybe take your piercings out first."

Netflix just made a key new hire as it doubles down on its global ad ambitions

Netflix wants to mature its ad business from infancy to " Adolescence," and the company just made a key international hire to help boost sales. The streamer recently hired Ed Couchman to lead its UK advertising sales team, Netflix confirmed to Business Insider. Couchman is set to join Netflix later this year from Spotify, where he had been head of advertising sales for the UK and Northern Europe since 2023. He is a familiar face on the UK advertising scene, with experience in both traditional and digital media. Before joining Spotify in 2023, Couchman previously held senior UK-based ad sales roles at Snap, Meta, and the British broadcaster Channel 4. Spotify declined to comment. Couchman will report to Damien Bernet, Netflix's VP of EMEA advertising, and will replace Warren Dias, whose exit from Netflix was announced in May. Dias had been in the role for two years. Netflix said during its second-quarter earnings this month that it was on track to "roughly double" its ad revenue in 2025, having also doubled its annual ad revenue last year. Execs on the earnings call said they were encouraged by the rollout of its in-house adtech stack in all the markets in which it sells ads, and by advertiser interest in live events. Those include comedy specials, wrestling, and boxing events. Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters said on the call that interactive ad formats and generative AI would also help open up new areas of ad growth. Netflix doesn't break out its advertising revenue in its financials. The ads plan initially launched in several markets worldwide, including the UK, in November 2022. The streamer said in June its ad-supported tier had reached 94 million monthly active users. Netflix has already made some headway in the UK ad market. June data from Barb, which measures TV ratings, found Netflix had the biggest share of 16- to 34-year-old viewers — a key demographic for advertisers — among all the commercial video-on-demand services in the country. Separate data from the UK communications regulator Ofcom found that Netflix was the most popular video-on-demand service in the UK in 2024, with viewers watching for an average of 22 minutes per day. Spotify's advertising unit is undergoing challenges aside from Couchman's departure. The music streaming service recently parted ways with its ad sales chief, Lee Brown, who is joining DoorDash as its chief revenue officer. Spotify said this week that its ad business hadn't met the company's growth expectations and that it was the right time for a leadership change.

A 'South Park' episode that mocked Trump and CBS attracted almost 6 million viewers and broke a 26-year-old audience record

The season premiere of 'South Park' got almost 6 million viewers across platforms, Paramount said. Titled "Sermon on the Mount," it mocked President Donald Trump, CBS, and parent company Paramount. The White House told BI the episode was "a desperate attempt for attention." The premiere of the animated series' 27th season attracted 5.9 million viewers across Comedy Central and Paramount+ in its first three days, Paramount said Wednesday. The show also garnered its biggest audience share for a linear premiere since 1999 and its best season premiere rating since 2022. It was the "most social episode" in South Park history and the most discussed program on television the night it aired, a press release from Paramount said. The episode aired just hours after creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker inked a reported $1.5 billion deal with Paramount to extend the series. That didn't stop them from criticizing their new corporate partner. Titled "Sermon on the Mount," the episode depicted Trump in bed with a cartoon Satan, joked about his genitalia, and ended with a deepfake of a naked Trump wandering the desert in a parody PSA. It also mocked CBS' abrupt cancellation of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" and Paramount's $16 million settlement with Trump. The episode also turned inward, using its plot to critique Paramount directly. At one point, Jesus — a recurring character in the show — tells a classroom that he's present "because of a lawsuit and the agreement with Paramount," warning students that "South Park is over" if they don't keep quiet. "You guys saw what happened to CBS? Well, guess who owns CBS? Paramount," he says. "You really want to end up like Colbert?" After it aired, a White House spokesperson told Business Insider that the episode was "a desperate attempt for attention." In a separate statement, another spokesperson said, "No fourth-rate show can derail President Trump's hot streak."
