‘Barbara Walters: Tell Me Everything' could have told us more

There's nothing wrong with ''Barbara Walters: Tell Me Everything,' the new Hulu documentary about the late broadcasting icon. It's an extremely thorough and enjoyable recap of the life of an extraordinary, pioneering television journalist. But it never really goes deeper than that.
Jackie Jesko's star-studded film features testimonials from television legends such as Oprah Winfrey and Katie Couric about the role that Walters played — both in their lives and for the industry. Some of Walters's most prominent sit-down subjects are also featured, including comedian Bette Midler and Monica Lewinsky, who both attest to her humanity and character.
The film does a good job of telling her whole story, beginning with a difficult childhood and ending with her departure from ABC and all of the 'mixed feelings' (her words) she had about stepping away after 50 years on television. It also charts the sexism, and sexist anchors, that she had to overcome to rise the ranks. A 'warts and all' look at Walters, the film drives home the point that what made her so good on television — an extreme dedication to her craft and an insatiable competitiveness — also hurt her personal and family life. It includes a strong section that poses thorny questions about the ethical implications of Walters's approach to landing interviews with some of world's most hated and feared figures, including an uncomfortable-to-watch-now meeting with Libyan dictator Moammar Gaddafi and his family. 'I think Barbara would be friends with the devil if it would get the interview,' a former ABC News producer says in the film.
It's less clear what the ultimate goal of the film was. Did the filmmakers set out to provide a historical accounting of her career and legacy? Mission accomplished. Or were they hoping to make something that connected her story to the present moment and used it as a window into how television has changed, how it continues to change and what that means for the future? If so, the film falls short.
There are, to be clear, some astute observations made about how things are different today than they were in Walters's heyday, when news shows regularly attracted tens of millions of viewers. As recently as 1999, her '20/20' interview with Lewinsky was watched by about 70 million people, a near impossibility today for a distracted populace that spends their evenings scrolling on their phones instead of sitting down for a prescheduled program. 'There's a certain feeling you get when you're watching something knowing that everyone is watching the same thing at that very same moment,' Couric says in the film. 'And that doesn't exist anymore, and I think that's when Barbara was the queen.'
Winfrey also talks about how celebrities today no longer need gatekeepers and go straight to the audience. 'There really is no place for a Barbara Walters interview now because everybody does their own interviews,' she says.
But the film doesn't explore that keen observation. It doesn't talk about what is lost when newsmakers no longer have to go through someone like Walters to talk to the public. It doesn't address how an Instagram Live video from a pop star is not news or journalism. And it doesn't necessarily connect the dots at a larger level and examine the slow-motion collapse of the television industry, which has been shedding relevance and revenue because it no longer serves the role it once did. Those big newsmaker interviews, for example, helped subsidize some of the less profitable aspects of the television business, meaning that networks today just cannot cover the world like they used to. These days, 'scoops' still matter, but they can't fundamentally change the outlook for a network that is competing with cooking shows on Netflix for attention.
While Walters was briefly shown pushing back on Donald Trump in a now-viral 1990 interview, the film doesn't dwell much on the current era in politics, a missed opportunity, as television networks — such as her former employer, ABC — struggle to cover a hostile president who has shown a desire to exact his will on the media industry.
The film ends on an extremely uplifting note, with video shown of Walters's last appearance on the daytime talk show she started, 'The View.' Winfrey played emcee as she announced a long list of female television hosts who lined up to greet Walters and wish her well upon her retirement.
The picture today is murkier, though. None of the broadcast evening news shows are hosted by women anymore, after Norah O'Donnell was replaced as anchor of the 'CBS Evening News' by two men, John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois, this year.
If the point of the documentary is to make clear to viewers how special Walters was and how dynamic she was and how influential she was, it also made clear how irreplaceable she was, at a time when her talent at extracting information and confessions is needed more than ever. And that's a sad note to end on.

Originally produced for Starz before being licensed to Netflix, 'The Hunting Wives' might have gotten lost in the streaming shuffle, but instead, it's become a major hit. The campy murder mystery based on May Cobb's novel has risen to the top of the Netflix TV charts, above popular Netflix originals like 'Untamed' and 'Perfect Match.' 'The Hunting Wives' has a bit of a throwback style, combining the twisty storytelling of old-school primetime soaps with the explicit content of modern streaming series. It's an erotic thriller that emphasizes both parts of that designation, with lots of bed-hopping as Boston transplant Sophie (Brittany Snow) navigates the treacherous world of wealthy Texas housewives — and forms a very intimate bond with glamorous socialite Margo (Malin Akerman). If you've binged all eight episodes and are looking for more sexy, dangerous intrigue among the rich and powerful, here are five shows like "The Hunting Wives" to stream now. This ABC classic also deals with deception and murder among wealthy suburbanites, with numerous juicy mysteries over the course of its eight seasons. Like 'The Hunting Wives,' 'Desperate Housewives' has a sense of humor about itself, and creator Marc Cherry combines self-aware comedy with all the shocking twists that fans of primetime soaps expect. There's a murder here, too, one that the characters played by Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley and Zoë Kravitz are eager to cover up. Just like Sophie and Margo, they coordinate their stories to throw suspicion elsewhere while dealing with multiple personal dramas at home. The first season of 'Big Little Lies' masterfully balances the pulpy mystery with brilliant, layered performances and ambitious non-linear storytelling, but the less successful second season could serve as a cautionary tale for 'The Hunting Wives.' Extending the story past the source novel is a difficult prospect, and while 'Big Little Lies' sometimes stumbles, 'The Hunting Wives' still has the chance to get that right. Watch on HBO Max If 'Big Little Lies' represents a more serious take on this type of material, then 'Palm Royale' goes the other way, fully embracing the campy possibilities of its story set among the social elite of 1969 Palm Beach, Florida. Kristen Wiig stars as ruthless but cheerful social climber Maxine Dellacorte, who's determined to use her husband's dubious family connections to insinuate herself into Palm Beach high society. Allison Janney and Leslie Bibb are especially entertaining as Maxine's well-connected frenemies, who reluctantly offer her assistance only when it benefits them as well. The costume and production design are wonderfully garish, and the storytelling is equally outrageous. Wiig knows when to play up the comedy, but she also finds the pathos in Maxine's desperation to fit in. Watch on Apple TV Plus Marc Cherry is also behind this Lifetime series, which shifts its emphasis to the employees of the upper class, focusing on maids who work for four Beverly Hills families. There's still a murder, though, as one of their fellow maids is killed at the beginning of the first episode. Ana Ortiz, Dania Ramirez, Roselyn Sánchez and Judy Reyes play the characters who are far more than just the household help, as they get deeply involved in the scandals of their employers. Cherry retains the sense of humor he brought to 'Desperate Housewives' while engaging more directly in commentary on class and race. It's not quite as pointed as the political jabs on 'The Hunting Wives,' but it demonstrates that even shows full of sexy people in compromising positions can use that salaciousness as a reflection of a fractured society. Watch on Hulu It's Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp) who's initially seeking revenge in this brooding, often darkly amusing ABC series, but there are so many betrayals and reversals over the course of its four seasons that the title could ultimately apply to the majority of the characters. Emily enters the exclusive world of Hamptons society under false pretenses, seeking justice for her imprisoned father, who was framed by a high-powered Hamptons family. It's safe to say that nothing Emily thinks she knows is true, and there is a dizzying array of reveals as the series goes on, anchored by VanCamp's fierce performance. The more ludicrous that 'Revenge' gets, the more fun it can be to watch, although it eventually collapses under its own weight. Even at its most absurd, though, it's still lavish, lurid and lively. GOD AND SEX, by Jon Raymond Arthur, the narrator of Jon Raymond's new novel, is an uncelebrated writer of meandering books. His last was 'a compendium of theories about light through the ages,' and it did not do well. Now, he's trying to write a book about trees. He's an unlikely protagonist for a novel with such an epic title, 'God and Sex,' the two biggest short words in the English language. What do those mysterious, powerful forces have to do with a 'paunchy, balding, papery' nobody and his forgettable books? Let's start with sex. At the end of the first chapter, Arthur spots a woman in a raincoat who is waiting outside for Phil, a professor Arthur befriends while researching his tree book. 'That's the moment I first encountered Phil's wife,' he recalls. Her name is Sarah. From there, the book plunges into Arthur and Sarah's enthusiastic affair, which becomes a liberating romp for them both, with little attention paid to the betrayal of her oblivious husband. Sarah and Arthur have sex in grassy fields, in empty classrooms and on Sarah's living room floor. The book isn't bawdy, but it carries the heat and electricity of an illicit infatuation. Arthur, Sarah and poor Phil all have the grit, wrinkles and foibles of real people fumbling through it together. But where does God come into all this? Sarah leaves for a retreat on Mount Hood. Soon after, a forest fire breaks out along the flanks of the mountain. Raymond, who has previously written climate fiction, including the novel 'Denial,' and several lauded screenplays, writes with harrowing detail about the sounds that trees make as they're consumed, the sting of acrid smoke in your eyes, and the flames that 'blurred between orange and yellow and blue, bending into delicate new forms with every riffle of wind.'
