Bradley Cooper's ‘Is This Thing On?' to close New York Film Festival: Everything to know about the star's latest Oscar contender

Yahoo30-07-2025
Bradley Cooper's Is This Thing On? has been selected as the closing night film of the New York Film Festival, where it will make its world premiere at Alice Tully Hall on Oct. 10. Blending drama and comedy, the film could mark Cooper's next bid for an Oscar.
WHO'S IN THE CAST?
The film stars Will Arnett and Laura Dern in the lead roles with a supporting cast that includes Andra Day, Christine Ebersole, Ciarán Hinds, Sean Hayes, Peyton Manning, and Amy Sedaris, as well as appearances by stand-up comedians Chloe Radcliffe, Reggie Conquest, and Jordan Jensen.

WHAT'S THE PLOT?
Arnett and Dern portray Alex and Tess Novak, a couple whose marriage unravels. As they navigate co-parenting their two young sons, Alex decides to radically change his life path by pursuing a new career as a stand-up comedian in New York. The story is inspired by the real-life journey of John Bishop, a British comedian who made an unconventional late-career shift into stand-up.
WHO'S BEHIND THE SCENES?
The film marks Cooper's third directorial effort, following A Star Is Born (2018) and Maestro (2023). The script is written by Cooper, Arnett, and Mark Chappell. It is produced by Cooper's Lea Pictures and will be distributed by Searchlight Pictures.
WHERE WAS IT FILMED?
Much of the film was shot on location throughout New York City, a decision that Cooper said deeply influenced the film's tone and authenticity. 'We are honored and humbled to premiere our film at the New York Film Festival. Earlier this year we had the wonderful opportunity to shoot this story all throughout the city, so it's very exciting to debut it on the closing evening of the festival. NYC injects an energy into every aspect of filmmaking that just can't be replicated. I have attended many premieres at NYFF over the years and to have the support and belief in our film from Dennis Lim and his team is an enormous thing for us. Thank you! On behalf of Will, Laura, and the entire cast and crew—we can't wait!'
AWARDS CHANCES?
If Cooper's past is any indication, Is This Thing On? may be a serious contender in the upcoming awards season. His 2023 biopic Maestro earned seven Academy Award nominations, while his 2018 directorial debut A Star Is Born received eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Dern is an Oscar winner for Marriage Story and an Emmy winner for Big Little Lies. While Arnett has been nominated for seven times for an Emmy and is best known for his work on Arrested Development and his voice role as BoJack Horseman.

Reese Witherspoon Gets Candid About Balancing Her Career and Motherhood: ‘I'd Cry Working 14 to 17 Hours'

'Someone asked me what raising three kids and building a career in Hollywood looked like," the actress wrote on Instagram, while sharing a glimpse at it NEED TO KNOW Reese Witherspoon got candid about navigating motherhood in Hollywood, in an Instagram carousel on Thursday, Aug. 14 The actress confessed that although it was "challenging at times," being a mom showed her what is "important in life" She shares daughter Ava Phillippe, 25, and son Deacon Phillippe, 21, with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe, and son Tennessee James Toth, 12, with her ex Jim Toth Reese Witherspoon is getting candid about how she balances motherhood with her career. The Oscar winner, 49, posted an Instagram carousel about parenting her children while navigating a successful career in Hollywood. The actress shares daughter Ava Phillippe, 25, and son Deacon Phillippe, 21, with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe, and son Tennessee James Toth, 12, with her ex Jim Toth. In the Thursday, Aug. 14, Instagram post, the Big Little Lies actress began with a selfie posing with all three children. The text overlay read: 'Someone asked me what raising three kids and building a career in Hollywood looked like…' 'It looked like spending a lot of time in trailers together," she wrote on top of a selfie of her and Tennessee smiling in what appeared to be a trailer together. She continued sharing images of herself with each of her children, highlighting different and unusual elements of being a mother in Hollywood. Her next photo was a throwback selfie of her with Ava and Deacon in the back seat of a car. 'It looked like always being on the road together," The Morning Show actress wrote. She then shared a screenshot of a cheeky text between her and Ava, when her daughter informed her that she 'butt-dialed an Instagram live.' Witherspoon joked, 'It looked like my kids constantly giving me career advice!' The Oscar winner then confessed that 'it looked really hard sometimes.' 'I'd cry working 14 to 17 hours, sometimes all night long and still woke up early for carpool. I was deliriously tired,' she wrote. 'It looked like trying to say something positive about work when I got home at night. So my kids would know that my work was meaningful to me and could be fun!' As she capped off the post, she included a final throwback image with Ava, and wrote, 'In conclusion, even though it was challenging at times, having kids gave me perspective about what was important in life.' 'Nothing was better than getting to come home and hug them and hear about their day!' 'Grateful to stand alongside other moms in this beautiful, messy journey.💕,' she captioned the Instagram post. 'Tag the working mom who needs this. ☺️.' Witherspoon has been open about motherhood over the years. She said in a November 2021 InStyle interview with Gayle King that her kids are her "first, most important priority.' She added, "If I told you how much space in my brain they take up every day — do you even think they know, Gayle? I don't even think they know." The year prior, she told Drew Barrymore on her eponymous talk show, that although balancing motherhood with the demands of her career hasn't been easy, it has "truly worth it." "There's a lot of compromise ... You feel like that's what makes me wake up on a Sunday, it's not movies or my job, it's my kids," the actress said in the September 2020 interview. "Being a mom is really great, it's a big part of my life. I would say it's the biggest part of my life." Read the original article on People

Unpacking Carrie Bradshaw's Final Outfit

And just like that. . . Carrie Bradshaw takes her final bow. Tonight's series finale of And Just Like That saw the iconic Sex and the City character, famously portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker, make her final TV appearance—alongside her fellow OG characters, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis). And in true Carrie fashion, she embodied her avant-garde fashion sense right up to the very last scene. Costume designed by Molly Rogers and Danny Santiago, Carrie's AJLT wardrobe throughout the series has been an epic playground for nostalgia; She has re-worn many iconic pieces from the early SATC days. (In case you missed it, we defined Carrie and all her signature wardrobe staples here.) For the costumers, it was bittersweet to see the show come to an end, considering how much fun it has been dressing Carrie over the years. 'They didn't tell any of the crew that this [season] was the ending. I was in denial,' Rogers tells Vogue. 'But as I read [the last episode], I was thinking about ways I could see her for the very last time. I was subconsciously trying to create something memorable.' So, let's dissect that grand finale Carrie look, shall we? Concluding with a shot of Carrie singing and dancing in her (glorious) New York home, our final glimpse of the character sees her in full-on fashion garb. No cozy sweats or loungewear here: It was only fitting that Carrie marked her final cameo in a voluminous crinoline skirt—a nod back to the iconic tutu she wore in the original Sex and the City opening title sequence, of course. 'I knew it had to end in a crinoline,' says Rogers. 'I always love to give homage to the original tutu, because that set the entire tone for what this show was going to be. But Carrie is mature and not going to be in a little mini tutu—it had to be a little grown-up.'
