Chhangur Baba syndicate: ED uncovers 63cr fin irregularities

(ED), in its ongoing investigation into Chhangur Baba's syndicate, has uncovered financial irregularities amounting to Rs 63 crore, a significant portion of which allegedly originated from foreign sources and was used to fund alleged forced religious conversions, land purchases and construction activities.
The ED said funds were funnelled through 22 bank accounts belonging to Chhangur and his aides. Major credits were received in the accounts of his associates Naveen Rohra and Neetu Rohra across various banks, including a private and three govt banks.
It added that Rs 35 lakh and Rs 2.19 crore were received from UAE-based sources into two govt bank accounts linked to the accused. Funds were categorised as "proceeds of crime" under the PMLA by the ED.
The ED alleged that Chhangur ran an organised conversion syndicate from the Chand Auliya Dargah in Balrampur. He reportedly used religious lectures, a book titled Shijra-e-Tayyaba, and psychological manipulation to influence individuals to convert.
A forensic audit of bank records revealed Rs 3.45 crore was transferred to "Apna Ghar Construction" for building a cow shed, hospital and bungalow, though the total cost was shown as Rs 12 crore.
Intriguingly, only Rs 5.7 crore was paid, leading to a fresh FIR by the construction firm against Chhangur and his group.
Substantial amount was also traced to individuals allegedly used as proxies: Rs 1.20 crore to Durgesh Kumar and Santosh Kumar, Rs 1.15 crore to Shehzad Shaikh, Rs 64 lakh in one day to Vaseem Ahmad, Shameem Malik, and Malik Ali Ahmad, Rs 40 lakh to Afsar Ali, Rs 25 lakh to Mohammad Iktida Khan, and Rs 37.84 lakh to Jumman Khan.
The agency further alleged that Chhangur, along with Naveen, purchased land worth Rs 16 crore in Pune, Maharashtra. The name of Sangeeta Upadhyay, wife of Balrampur CJM court clerk Rajesh Kumar Upadhyay, has emerged in this land deal through a profit-sharing agreement. Financial links were established between Rajesh and Neetu Rohra, including a Rs 3.5 lakh transfer.
Searches conducted on July 17, 2025, across 15 locations linked to the accused, led to the recovery of multiple sale deeds and property documents.
These documents allegedly show systematic acquisition of immovable assets during 2020–2021 using illicit funds to mask the origin of money.
Statements recorded under Section 17 of PMLA from property sellers confirmed sales to associates of Chhangur Baba, primarily to Naveen and Neetu Rohra. They also stated that Baba was directly involved in these deals, the sources privy to the probe said.
The ED initiated the probe following registration of a PMLA case on July 9, 2025.
The ED, while taking custody remand of Chhangur from the court, informed that the syndicate used laundered funds not just for property deals but also to "lure innocent people" into changing their religion, thus establishing a clear nexus between financial crime and religious exploitation.
Further legal proceedings are underway, with more disclosures expected as the investigation progresses. Currently, Chhangur Baba is under remand of ED from July 28 and will remain till Friday (Aug 1). The ATS arrested Jalaluddin alias Chhangur Baba and his associate Neetu alias Nasreen on July 5.

The violations included riding without a helmet, using a mobile phone while riding, and entering no-entry or one-way zones. Shivakumar had also shared a video on his official 'X' account showing himself wearing a helmet and riding the two-wheeler, announcing the opening of the Hebbal flyover loop, which is slated for August 15.

Woman working as domestic help held with Rs 14 lakh MD drug in Thane
Thane, Aug 7 (PTI) Police have arrested a 25-year-old woman who worked as a domestic help after seizing MD drug (mephedrone) valued at Rs 14 lakh from her in Maharashtra's Thane district, officials said on Thursday. Naushin Mainuddin Sheikh, resident of Mumbra, was apprehended on Tuesday evening while she was found moving in a suspicious manner on a road near a defunct hotel in Ulhasnagar, an official from Hill Line police station said. She was stopped and during checking, the police found her in possession of 71.03 grams of MD (mephedrone), a synthetic drug banned under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, he said. The estimated market value of the seized contraband is Rs 14,31,120, the official said. During her interrogation, the accused claimed she had procured the drug for sale from a resident of Nalla Sopara in neighbouring Palghar district and efforts were on to nab him, he said. A case was registered against the accused under relevant sections of the NDPS Act. 'We are currently investigating the source of the contraband and its intended recipients," the official added. 6-yr-old Indian-origin girl, chef assaulted in racist attacks in Ireland
A six-year-old Indian-origin girl and an Indian chef have become the latest victims of a string of racist attacks targeting Indian nationals and Indian-origin Irish citizens in Ireland. Indian-origin girl attacked in Waterford The girl, born in Ireland to parents from Kottayam, Kerala, was playing outside her home in Waterford City with friends in the evening Monday, when a group of boys and a girl verbally and physically assaulted her. The gang, made up of boys aged between 12 and 14 and a girl around eight, allegedly called her a 'dirty Indian' and told her to 'go back to India'. They then punched her in the face, twisted her hair, hit her neck, and injured her private parts by shoving a bicycle wheel against her. 'She was very upset, she started crying. She couldn't even talk, she was so scared,' her mother told the Irish Mirror, a Dublin-based news outlet, reported Hindustan Times. Her mother, who moved to Ireland eight years ago and recently became an Irish citizen, is a nurse and lives with her husband and children. At the time of the attack, she had stepped inside briefly to feed her 10-month-old baby. The mother said her daughter returned home in tears and has been too frightened to step outside since the incident. She said, even playing in front of their own house no longer feels safe. Despite becoming a citizen, she said her family continues to face discrimination, and now even her children are not spared. She also identified the boys involved in the assault and saw them lingering in the area afterward. Mother of the victim has filed a complaint with the Gardaí (Irish national police). A Garda spokesperson confirmed that officers 'responded to a report of an alleged assault in the Kilbarry area of Waterford city on the evening of Monday 4 August,' and that investigations are ongoing, reported The Times of India. Indian chef assaulted and robbed in Dublin In a separate incident on Wednesday morning (local time), Laxman Das, a sous chef from Kolkata working at the Anantara The Marker Dublin hotel, was assaulted near the Hilton Hotel in Dublin while on his way to work, according to a report by The Times of India. He was attacked by three individuals who stole his electric bike, cash, and mobile phone. Das was taken to St Vincent's University Hospital for treatment. Attacks on Indians prompts embassy warning These assaults are the latest in a series of racially motivated attacks reported across Ireland in recent weeks. According to Hindustan Times, at least three attacks targeting Indians were reported in Ireland in July. In Tallaght, a group of 10 teenagers assaulted an Indian man on his way to a local temple, stabbing him multiple times in the face. In Dublin, another Indian man in his 20s was attacked at a tram stop by a group of teenagers. Reports said he was pushed, beaten, and stabbed in the face with a screwdriver. In a separate incident in Dublin, Santosh Yadav, a senior data scientist, was returning to his apartment when he was attacked from behind by six teenagers. The rise in racially charged violence has prompted the Indian embassy in Dublin to issue an advisory and share emergency helpline numbers for Indian nationals living in the country.
