Biggest travel mistakes include booking wrong tickets and 'getting lost'

New research has found the most common travel mistakes, with 14% of UK travellers saying they've had to buy new plane tickets after making a mistake on their booking. New research from Paddy Power Games found 9% have had to spend hours on the phone with customer service after messing up a holiday booking, with 7% of travellers confessing they ended up spending the night in the airport, having not booked a hotel.
23% of 25-34-year-olds admitted they've been slapped with unexpected baggage fees while one-in-five of the 45-60 age group said they had packed restricted items into their hand luggage.
Travellers have also confessed they don't always know where they're going - with 51% not knowing Santorini is in Greece. 22% thought it was in Italy, while 14% admitted they hadn't a clue.
Porto didn't fare much better, with 7% believing it's in Spain. And around four million thought San Diego is in Spain too. 13% don't know Berlin is in Germany, despite it being the capital city. Florence got lost too, with 6% assuming it was in France.
1% throught that Miami is in Türkiye.
A spokesperson for Paddy Power Games, said: "We launched Paddy's Big Summer Spin to give punters a chance to bag the getaway of their dreams – and based on our findings, it looks like half the country could use it just to figure out where they're going. Whether you're a globetrotting guru or someone who thinks Miami's in Türkiye, we've got your back… just maybe double-check the map before you go."
Paddy's giving away more than 40,000 prizes every Friday this summer for the Big Summer Spin - including a £5k holiday voucher.

'I bought a beachfront apartment in a holiday hotspot – it is cheaper than renting'

Travel writer Karolina Wachowicz, who moved to Barcelona from Krakow, Poland, shares her experience buying a beachfront apartment in a popular vacation spot A savvy travel writer has bought a beachfront apartment in a popular vacation spot and claims it is more affordable than renting. Karolina Wachowicz became frustrated with the rising rental costs in her new city, Barcelona, Spain. ‌ However, when the Polish journalist told her friends she planned to buy instead, they laughed, believing the Spanish process would be too overwhelming for her. "If you've ever tried to rent a flat in Barcelona, you know the struggle," Karolina, who originally comes from Kraków, told What's The Jam. ‌ "After a year of paying sky-high rent and handling endless paperwork for agencies, I decided to buy my own place with a terrace. ‌ "It turned out to be far simpler and more transparent than the chaos of renting." To legally rent a property in Spain, tenants are typically required to provide a plethora of documents, including their passport, work contract, and several months' proof of income. Renters also need a Spanish identification number for foreigners (NIE), and many agencies insist on interviews where potential tenants compete for the property. Karolina said: "The whole process can stretch for months, and fees are hefty. ‌ "Agency commissions often start at between €700 and €800, plus additional deposits, typically two months' rent, and your first rent upfront. At the moment, average rental prices are higher than ever. "A one-bedroom apartment in central Barcelona can easily cost around €1,500 a month or more, depending on the location and standard. This was what I paid for rent before buying my place. "But now it's not unusual to see even higher prices." Fed up with the rental rat race, Karolina started exploring the possibility of buying her own apartment. ‌ She said: "Despite all the warnings from friends, the process turned out to be quite straightforward. I found the right property and negotiated with the agency. "I then signed a preliminary agreement and paid a small deposit. I secured a bank mortgage - they typically ask for a 20% down payment, although some banks offer mortgages for just 10% or even 0%, depending on certain conditions. ‌ "I also had to provide my NIE number and a work contract before finalising the purchase at the notary." In the end, Karolina said her apartment cost just over €180,000 (£156,886). The travel writer claimed that her biggest upfront costs were the 20% down payment, which she saved in advance, and a 10% property transfer tax. The 35-year-old added: "The paperwork was manageable compared to the endless files demanded for renting, and the entire process was much more efficient. "I moved in quickly, but the apartment needed a major refresh. I invested most of my remaining savings into a complete bathroom renovation, handled painting and cleaning by myself, and found furniture at flea markets and through local second-hand groups. ‌ "Budgeting was crucial, so I got creative, refurbishing the old terrace benches and installing affordable artificial grass on the terrace. From start to finish, purchasing was less stressful and actually faster than many rental applications. "Even waiting for mortgage approval took less time than waiting for some agencies to respond. The renovation cost about the same as an expensive holiday, but now I have a place I can proudly call home. "Not only because I feel good here, but also because of the work I put into it. And my monthly costs are less than half of what I would pay to rent a similar place in today's market."

M&S has opened its first ever airside supermarket at a London airport

Sometimes the airport just doesn't deliver when it comes to food. You don't always want a soggy Boots meal deal, or a greasy 'Spoons fry up. Sometimes what you need is an M&S crayfish sandwich with sea salt and balsamic vinegar crisps followed by Percy Pigs for pudding. So, we have good news, because Marks & Spencer has opened its first-ever airside supermarket in London Heathrow Airport (LHR), meaning from now passengers can stock up on Colin the Caterpillar bites, mini flapjacks and posh crisps before jetting off on their flights. M&S has launched two food shops inside Heathrow Terminal 5 – one at Gate A and one at Gate B. The shop at Gate A opened on Monday July 21, selling meal deals and food to go, while the Gate B outpost will open later in the week, selling items designed to be gifts including Percy Pigs, biscuit tins and the Big Daddy chocolate bar. The stores will be open from first flight to last flight, operating from 4.30am to 11pm. Right now the two shops are only operating as pop-ups. M&S hasn't confirmed if they will become a permanent fixture, or when the pop-ups will close. The arrival of M&S at Heathrow comes days after LHR revealed a multi-billion-pound investment plan to fund its future expansion, which will involve raising passenger charges. The airport also hopes to open its controversial third runway within the next 10 years. M&S, meanwhile, opened a new London Food Hall in Leytonstone this week.
