Layne Churchill of Marshall is Enquirer Athlete of the Week winner for week of April 20
BATTLE CREEK — The fans have spoken.
The winner of the latest Enquirer Athlete of the Week fan poll is Layne Churchill of the Marshall softball team.
Fans got behind Churchill to help her edge finalists Calvin Paesens, Colton Beard and Angelia Palma. Churchill received 57 percent of the vote by the 5 p.m. Wednesday deadline. Thanks to her fans, she is being featured in this Enquirer Athlete of the Week Sunday spotlight.

Marshall's Churchill helped the Redhawks sweep Coldwater in a conference doubleheader. Churchill earned the win as the pitcher in the first game, allowing one earned run, while also adding two hits in each game and four RBI in the nightcap. Since that big week, Churchill has stayed hot, going 8-for-8 in a doubleheader with Parma Western with three doubles and two home runs.

"Layne has stepped up in a big way for us this year. She knows it's her time and she has settled into the role of workhorse on the mound while giving the middle of our lineup some serious power. As a coach, I'm most proud of her attitude this year. She has remained positive in all situations and has been a great role model for our under classmen,' Marshall softball coach Trevor Kelly said.

Longhorns outfielder Tommy Farmer enters the transfer portal After a career-year, Tommy Farmer is looking for a new opportunity After two seasons with the Texas Longhorns, Tommy Farmer IV is moving on. During the 2025 campaign, the Oaks Christian High School product set career highs in games with 58, home runs with one, and RBI with 25. As Farmer looks to build on his success last year, he will have to make more contact. He struck out 65 times during his sophomore campaign, the second most on the team. When Farmer did reach base, he struggled to maximize his speed, going 7-12 on stolen base attempts. Coming out of high school, Farmer was ranked as the 106th-best outfielder in his recruiting class. He was also ranked as the 81st-best player in the state of California. Over the last few years in Texas, he has shown flashes of being that player while excelling on defense. Despite his struggles at the plate, Farmer was one of the Longhorns' best players defensively. Farmer posted a .987 fielding percentage and only committed one error. While he will have to battle for playing time, Farmer has proven at the college level that he can be an elite defender. At Farmer's next stop, the key to more playing time will be improvement at the plate and base paths. If he can do that, he has the potential to be a very productive player. Kansas City Royals star rookie Jac Caglianone is known for his ability to spray balls all over the baseball field. So when he went 0-for-5 in his major-league debut, nobody panicked. He was just feeling out his first taste of the majors. Well, it didn't take long for Caglianone to adjust, because he picked up his first major-league hit Thursday. Caglianone struck in the top of the fourth inning. With Royals catcher Salvador Perez on second, Caglianone smacked an RBI single down the first-base line to extend the Royals' lead. Advertisement The ball came off Caglianone's bat at 91.4 mph, a strong figure, but nowhere near the eye-popping exit velocities Caglianone put up in the minors. Caglianone's family, including his father, cheered and clapped in the stands following the hit. The St. Louis Cardinals made sure the ball found its way to the Royals' dugout so the rookie could keep it for the rest of his career. Big things are expected from Caglianone, 22, after he dominated in the minors. Despite being drafted in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft, Caglianone forced his way through the team's system quickly. The Royals promoted him aggressively, starting him in Double A to begin the 2025 season. He hit .322/.394/.553 at the level before earning a promotion to Triple-A. Advertisement He was even better there, where he hit .319/.370/.723 in just 12 games. That was all the Royals needed to see before bringing him up to the majors. Caglianone immediately found himself in the thick of the Royals' major-league lineup, hitting 6th in his major-league debut. Though he went 0-for-5 in his first game, Caglianone showed off his impressive pop. Four of his batted balls were hit over 95 mph. He had a 113.9 mph groundout in the ninth inning and a 112.1 mph groundout in the fifth inning. While both balls resulted in outs, they were the two hardest-hit balls by any player in the contest. There's no getting around it: The Baltimore Orioles have been a bad baseball team so far in this MLB season. They have not found solid starting pitching and their reliable young players are slumping. Advertisement While the Orioles have shown a little improvement lately, they remain stuck in the back of the pack in the American League East. Their performance also has them in the No. 24 spot in the latest MLB Power Rankings from The Athletic. Look at the team as a whole, there haven't been too many bright spots. One of them, though, has been designated hitter Ryan O'Hearn. Orioles DH Ryan O'Hearn has been a bright spot for Baltimore He's one of the top DHs in the AL at this time. O'Hearn is hitting .328 with nine home runs and 23 RBI. He's got a .525 slugging percentage, which means O'Hearn is making solid contact. If the Orioles had a chance to put one of their players on this season's All-Star team, then O'Hearn would be a fitting candidate. It's also noteworthy to see if second baseman Jackson Holliday can also get in on the summertime fun, too. Advertisement Holliday had a pretty solid May, but the trick is repeating that in June and all summer long. Orioles fans know all about the team's pitching situation. It's not good. This needs to be addressed for any real marked improvement record-wise going forward. At least Baltimore can take comfort in the fact that they've played better than the Colorado Rockies. There needs to be some serious front office conversations on getting Baltimore back in the AL East playoff picture. Should O'Hearn and Holliday become the backbone of an Orioles' rally this season, Baltimore might just surge back into the postseason conversation.
