Delaware's 2025 trout season is fully open. What anglers need to know

Yahoo06-04-2025
Delaware's upstate trout season officially kicked off this weekend, giving young anglers a special head start before opening to the general public. Youth under the age of 16 had exclusive access to the streams beginning at 7 a.m. on Saturday, April 5, ahead of the full season opening on Sunday for all anglers.
This follows the earlier launch of the downstate pond trout season, which opened to youth anglers on March 1. The regular downstate season began the following day, Sunday, March 2, allowing all anglers to fish across Kent and Sussex counties.
To fish legally in Delaware, adult anglers are required to have a state fishing license and a trout stamp. Youth between 12 and 15 must have a Young Angler Trout Stamp. Proceeds from trout stamp sales, along with funding from the federal Sport Fish Restoration Program, help support the state's annual trout stocking efforts.
Here's what else anglers need to know before heading out on the water this season.
In preparation for April's opening day, the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, or DNREC, stocked thousands of trout across the state's fishing waters, including several trophy-sized fish weighing two pounds or more.
In northern Delaware, DNREC stocked several upstate streams with rainbow and brown trout, including White Clay Creek, Red Clay Creek, Christina Creek, Pike Creek, Beaver Run, Wilson Run and Mill Creek. To maintain quality fishing throughout the season, White Clay Creek will be restocked weekly through April, while other streams will be replenished periodically.
Downstate, officials announced more than 300 pounds of 12- to 13-inch rainbow trout were released into Tidbury Pond near Dover in Kent County and Newton Pond near Greenwood in Sussex County. Both locations also included a mix of larger, trophy-sized trout.

Daily catch limits are set at six trout per angler, except in designated fly-fishing sections where the limit is four. DNREC's Division of Fish and Wildlife provides an online map that highlights designated trout fishing areas, including fly-fishing sections of Red Clay and White Clay Creeks.
Anyone between the ages of 12 and 64 who fishes for trout in Delaware is required to have a Delaware Trout Stamp. Fishing licenses and trout stamps can be purchased online or through licensed agents statewide. The license also covers recreational crabbing and clamming in Delaware waters.
Additionally, all recreational anglers aged 16 and over must obtain a Delaware-issued Fisherman Information Network, or FIN number, which is automatically assigned when purchasing a fishing license.
Visit de.gov/licensing for more information or to purchase.
Delaware residents aged 65 and older are exempt from the trout stamp requirement.
Additionally, drivers who hold a valid Delaware surf fishing vehicle permit are also exempt from fishing license requirements, as long as the vehicle is in a designated surf fishing area. However, this exemption does not apply to passengers in the vehicle.

To celebrate National Fishing and Boating Week, June 1–8, 2025, the DNREC Division of Fish and Wildlife has designated June 7 and 8 as free fishing days. On these days, anyone can fish in Delaware waters without a fishing license. However, anglers aged 16 and older still need a Fisherman Information Network number to participate.

Proposed 72-hour train route between LA, NY aims to debut in 2026

A rail company is proposing a new privately funded train route that can begin transporting people between Los Angeles and New York City in less than 72 hours as soon as next year. Delaware-based group AmeriStarRail unveiled its coast-to-coast route called the Transcontinental Chief with hopes of it being operational by May 10, 2026, ahead of the United States' 250th birthday and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The goal date, which lands on National Train Day, is subject to operating agreements with various host railroads, the company clarified. The project has been presented to the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, also known as Amtrak. AmeriStarRail argues that a partnership between the two companies would be mutually beneficial, emphasizing that the route would be more profitable than Amtrak's existing long-distance trains. AmeriStarRail CEO Scott Spencer said Amtrak is seeking more information on the planning and coordination of the proposed system. "This is a way to confront the challenges Amtrak faces and create opportunities for them to succeed," Spencer told USA TODAY. "We're hopeful that all the parties that are involved including the host railroads recognize what a great opportunity this is for our nation." Amtrak did not respond to multiple USA TODAY requests for comment. Transcontinental Chief to replace existing bicoastal routes AmeriStarRail said the Transcontinental Chief train would replace the Southwest Chief and the Pennsylvanian Amtrak routes that currently help transport people between Southern California and New York via stops in Chicago or Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. New Yorkers will board the train from the Hoboken Terminal in New Jersey, a three-mile ride to Lower Manhattan across the Hudson River through the Holland Tunnel. AmeriStarRail clarified that it's unable to directly stop in the Big Apple due to New York Penn Station tunnel restrictions for the passenger cars Amtrak uses, known as Superliners. However, there are no boarding restrictions in Los Angeles. The route would also include a single-level train section from Harrisburg to serve people in Washington, D.C., via Philadelphia, according to AmeriStarRail. "In discussion with various interests along the route, whether that be Victorville, California; Newton, Kanas; Lebanon, Pennsylvania, they recognize the economic engine that the Transcontinental Chief will be for their communities," Spencer said. Spencer added that the Transcontinental Chief would also offer travelers on Route 66 an alternative way back from their nearly 2,500-mile drive. Bicoastal route to be 'rolling rest stop for truckers' In addition to transporting passengers, the Transcontinental Chief would also transport truck drivers and their tractor trailers between the West and East coasts within the three-day span, according to AmeriStarRail. Through a roll-on, roll-off loading system, the route would serve as a "rolling rest stop for truckers" while offering a safe alternative to parking shortages, the company states. "At RailPorts along the route, truckers will be able to drive their entire tractor trailer trucks onto railroad flatcars and then rest and relax onboard Amtrak Coach, Sleeper and Dining cars as they travel 200 - 500 miles during their federally mandated 10 hour rest period," an AmeriStarRail news release states. Intending to debut next May, Spencer said the route would start with intermediate ports available in LA and New York City, with plans to incorporate more in the future. The company aims to transport cars, vans, motorcycles, RVs and charter motorcoaches, eventually also serving the Grand Canyon and Chicago.

The Phillies' bid for a top-line reliever has reportedly landed them one of MLB's most coveted. The Twins Jhoan Duran is being dealt to the Phillies, according to The Athletic and ESPN. The Twins are widely reported to be obtaining pitcher Mick Abel, now at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, and High-A Jersey Shore catcher Eduardo Tait from the Phillies. Tait is fourth and Abel sixth on ranking of Phillies prospects. Duran is a 6-foot-3, 230-pound right-hander from the Dominican Republic who is 27 and cannot become a free agent until 2028. He is 6-4 with a 2.01 ERA and 16 saves in 49 games this year. In four seasons, all with the Twins, Duran is 17-23 with a 2.47 ERA and 74 saves in 223 games.
