'Untethered and exploratory rock music': Pink Floyd's Live At Pompeii to be rereleased at cinemas and IMAX

The landmark concert film Pink Floyd's Live At Pompeii is going to be rereleased in cinemas in IMAX format in April, and a soundtrack is going to be officially issued for the first time.
Originally shot in the deserted amphitheatre in October 1971 and released the following year, Live In Pompeii was stunningly different from any other concert film before or since. No one had ever thought of holding a concert in such an unusual place, nor to play without an audience. Unless you count the ghosts of the thousands who died in the doomed Roman city.
The soundtrack has been given a new mix by modern-day prog maven Steven Wilson. Wilson described it as an 'honour', saying: 'Ever since my dad brainwashed me as a kid by playing The Dark Side of the Moon on repeat, Pink Floyd have been my favourite band.
"They are my Beatles, deeply ingrained in my musical DNA. I first saw Pompeii from a grainy print at a local cinema. It made an incredible impression on me with its untethered and exploratory rock music made by four musicians who seemed to epitomise the notion of intellectual cool.'
Live At Pompeii became something of a word of mouth classic in the 1970s and 80s, its reputation gradually building over the years through screenings at late-night cinemas (like Wilson's) or on video. For new fans it was a primer for the post-Syd, pre-Dark Side Floyd.
The film was very much the baby of director Adrian Maben, who had to work hard to convince both the band and Italian authorities in charge of the amphitheatre that his idea could work. Maben wanted to create something very different to existing concert films with their audience cutaway shots.
'It was to be an anti-Woodstock,' Maben told Prog magazine in 2022. 'Above all, there should be the notion of silence, and the images (of Pompeii) would speak for themselves with the music. It was something that had to stand on its own: the Floyd and the emptiness of the theatre. Maybe, just maybe, it was like they were playing for the ghosts of the dead.'
As it happened, Floyd's spacious introverted music was ideally suited to the eerie emptiness of the ancient ruins. Much of the film has become iconic – the shots of the band clambering over the ruins and Mount Vesuvius, Roger Waters whacking the gong on Saucerful Of Secrets and the October light bathing both band and ancient venue in a golden sheen.
The film has been retitled Pink Floyd at Pompeii MCMLXXII and will be released at cinemas and IMAX from April 24. The soundtrack follows on May 2.

Hammerhead shark falls from sky in South Carolina, interrupting disc golf game
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. A hammerhead shark recently crashed down on Splinter City Disc Golf Course in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. While waterspouts can pull fish from the sea and drop them over land, the culprit was a more common fish foe: an osprey (Pandion haliaetus) that had lost its lunch. The unusual event took place on May 18 near the 11th hole of the wooded course near the ocean. "It's not uncommon to see an osprey carrying something, but you take note because it's still really cool to see," Jonathan Marlowe, who witnessed the hammerhead fall as he was playing disc golf, told Garden & Gun magazine. "I thought it would be a random fish." Instead, it was a small, dead hammerhead shark, easily identifiable by its wide, mallet-shaped cranial structure known as a cephalofoil. Also known as "fish hawks," ospreys are excellent aquatic hunters and the only raptors with feet designed to catch slippery prey. But they tend to feed on fish less than 12 inches (30 centimeters) long, and the hammerhead found on the golf course appears to be longer than a foot. Related: Sharks: Facts about some of the ocean's top predators It's likely the osprey carried the fish at least half a mile (800 meters) from the ocean before losing its grip. Marlowe said two crows chased the osprey into a tree, where it dropped the hammerhead onto the ground below. Crows and other smaller birds are known to use a technique called mobbing to protect their territories during breeding season by teaming up to ward off predators. According to posts on the Myrtle Beach Disc Golf Facebook page, wildlife such as snakes, raccoons, and alligators are common sights on local courses. But seeing a shark in the woods might just be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. "We couldn't believe it and kept asking ourselves, 'did that really just happen?'" Marlowe said, who left the hammerhead behind in the hopes that the raptor might return and make a meal out of it. A survey by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources that ran from 2013 to 2016 detected three types of hammerheads — bonnethead (Sphyrna tiburo), scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini), and great hammerhead (Sphyrna mokarran) — in coastal waters off South Carolina and Georgia. And in 2013, a new, rare species was discovered in the same area. Named the Carolina hammerhead (Sphyrna gilbert), the fish look a lot like scalloped hammerheads but are genetically different. It is unclear which of these species fell from the sky in Myrtle Beach.

Pink Floyd Rocks Back To No. 1
Pink Floyd's At Pompeii reclaims the No. 1 spot on the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart, becoming ... More one of the band's few multi-week U.K. chart-toppers. LONDON - JULY 02: (L to R) David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Rick Wright from the band Pink Floyd on stage at "Live 8 London" in Hyde Park on July 2, 2005 in London, England. The free concert is one of ten simultaneous international gigs including Philadelphia, Berlin, Rome, Paris, Barrie, Tokyo, Cornwall, Moscow and Johannesburg. The concerts precede the G8 summit (July 6-8) to raising awareness for MAKEpovertyHISTORY. (Photo by) Pink Floyd is back in charge of an albums ranking in the United Kingdom, the country where the pioneering group got its start. The band recently scored a new No. 1 album with At Pompeii - MCMLXXII, and now, a month after the set debuted, it has returned to the summit. With another moment in the spotlight, the collection becomes one of a very small number of projects from the rock outfit to rack up multiple frames atop the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart. At Pompeii jumps from No. 3 to No. 1 on the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart, the U.K.'s ranking of the bestselling titles in those genres. Pink Floyd replaces Saviors by Green Day, which also enjoyed another turn in the lead slot just a few days ago after its deluxe edition was issued. At Pompeii has now spent five weeks on the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart, two of which have been at No. 1. As it returns to the peak position, the live recording becomes Pink Floyd's third title to lead for more than one frame. It joins The Dark Side of the Moon (32 weeks) and The Endless River (seven). Four other projects by the band — Animals, The Division Bell, The Early Years – 1965–1972, and Transmissions + 1969 — all managed just a single turn ruling the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart. At Pompeii also climbs on both the Official Physical Albums and Official Albums Sales charts this week. The set jumps to Nos. 14 and 15, respectively, after previously taking a turn at No. 1. As is typically the case, Pink Floyd sees multiple albums appear on the charts in the U.K. The Dark Side of the Moon is present on the most tallies, as it takes up space on four rosters and largely climbs on them, including returning to the top 10 on the Official Rock & Metal Albums ranking. Wish You Were Here lands on a pair, and The Wall reenters the Official Rock & Metal Albums list, giving the group control over 10% of that tally.
