Trump extended the invite in a letter delivered by Vice President JD Vance, who attended the pope's inaugural mass on Sunday and then met privately with the Catholic leader, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters.
'The vice president passed along a letter to the pope from the president and from the first lady, extending their warm wishes and inviting them to the White House as soon as he possibly can,' Leavitt said.
Leo has already sought to act as a mediator of global conflicts, offering to assist in negotiations to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. Over the weekend, both Leo and Vance met privately with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy ahead of a planned call between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday.
During his inaugural mass, Leo said he would work for a reconciled world.
'We still see too much discord, too many wounds caused by hatred, violence, prejudice, the fear of difference, and an economic paradigm that exploits the Earth's resources and marginalizes the poorest,' he said.
In addition to the letter, Vance delivered the pope a jersey from his hometown Chicago Bears with 'Pope Leo XIV' on the back as well as a copy of Saint Augustine's 'City of God.'

U.S. Tariffs Ease With Canada, Mexico Shift

America's effective tariff rate ticked down to 16% in July from 17% earlier in the month, Fitch Ratings said, thanks to a surge in tariff-free imports from Canada and Mexico under the USMCA trade pact. The jump was striking. In June, 81% of Canadian exports into the U.S. qualified as USMCA-compliant, up from 56% the month before. Mexico saw a similar move, with 77% of shipments clearing the bar versus just 42% in May. Those exemptions helped blunt the sting of Trump-era tariffs that still technically set rates at 35% for Canada and 25% for Mexico. Elsewhere, though, the tariff picture looks much tougher. China's effective rate has spiked to 41.4%, more than 30 percentage points higher than last year. India faces a 50% rate, while the European Union averages 15%, with member states ranging from about 3% to more than 18%. All this is playing out against a weaker U.S. dollar. The Dollar Index is down 9.5% so far in 2025, while the Canadian dollar has gained 4% and Mexico's peso has surged 11%. For investors, that combination of softer tariffs on North American trade and stronger local currencies makes Canada- and Mexico-linked ETFs like EWC, EWW, FXC, and MXF stand out more than ever. America's Pensions Just Crushed Wall Street--And Hardly Anyone Noticed

US public pensions are quietly pulling off a winand the numbers might catch Wall Street off guard. According to S&P Global Ratings, these funds are set to post returns between 11% and 12% for the fiscal year ended June, powered by a broad market surge. That's despite a brutal two-day rout in April, when the S&P 500 (SPY) vaporized $5.4 trillion in value after investors balked at former President Trump's tariff announcement. Even so, this year's haul follows a 16% to 17% gain in fiscal 2024both well above the 7% return most plans target to stay solvent. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 10 Warning Signs with INTC. Behind the scenes, the engine driving these gains isn't just the stock marketit's a cocktail of global equity momentum, private equity outperformance, and long-term bets on AI. New York City's pension funds alone clocked a 10.3% return on the back of the rally, and now S&P is lifting its discount rate assumption from 6% to 6.5%, a move that reflects growing confidence in productivity-led growth. With AI and private markets rewriting the rules, pensions may be better positioned than many assumed just months ago. Still, the road ahead could hinge on how long this tech-fueled expansion holds. S&P's analysts, led by Todd Kanaster, point to a possible upside if innovation continues to outpace expectations and the Fed holds steady. In that scenario, public pensions might keep defying gravityand in doing so, they could reshape how institutional investors think about long-term risk, reward, and the role of equity-heavy portfolios. Apple Ramps Up iPhone Production in India Factories

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is ramping up iPhone production in India, running five factoriesincluding two brand new plantsas it looks to reduce reliance on China for U.S.-bound models, Bloomberg reported. For the first time, all four iPhone 17 models, including the high-end Pro versions, will be produced in India ahead of next month's launch. It's a milestone that marks India's growing role as a core hub in Apple's supply chain. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 8 Warning Signs with FXCOF. Between April and July, India exported $7.5 billlion worth of iPhones, an acceleration compared with $17 billion exported during the entire previous fiscal year. The expansion includes Tata Group's facility in Hosur and Foxconn's (FXCOF) site near Bangalore's airportboth of which came online recently. Tata's role is set to grow sharply, with its plants expected to account for as much as half of India's iPhone output within two years. The shift comes as Apple looks to limit tariff risks tied to China production, even as U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly urged CEO Tim Cook to stop building new facilities in India. For Apple, the bet is clear: diversify now to keep shipments steady and costs predictable. This article first appeared on GuruFocus.
