Google introduces new class of cheap AI models as cost concerns intensify
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 5 - Alphabet's (GOOGL.O), opens new tab Google on Wednesday announced updates to its Gemini family of large language models, including a new product line with competitive pricing to low-cost artificial intelligence models like that of Chinese rival DeepSeek.
The tech giant offers several versions of Gemini that vary in price and performance. It already offered a lightweight variant known as "Flash" but its new "Flash-Lite" model is even cheaper.
On Wednesday, Google released Gemini 2.0 Flash to the general public after previewing it to developers in December. It also launched Flash-Lite and released a new version of its flagship "Pro" model into test phases.
Google created Flash-Lite after receiving positive feedback about the 1.5 version of Flash, Koray Kavukcuoglu, chief technology officer of Google's DeepMind AI lab, said in a press release. Gemini 2.0 Flash is costlier than its predecessor.
The cost to develop AI models and, in turn, the cost to use them have come under investor scrutiny in recent weeks after DeepSeek revealed it spent less than $6 million on the final training run of a model. Developers at leading U.S. AI firms said the total cost was likely magnitudes larger.
Still, DeepSeek's rise drew questions on the earnings calls of Alphabet and rivals Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab and Meta (META.O), opens new tab. All have so far signaled intent to continue massive capital expenditures in the field.
Alphabet shares slumped Tuesday in part due to investor pessimism around a planned capex hike that was 29% higher than Wall Street expected.
Certain inputs on Gemini Flash-Lite cost $0.019 per 1 million tokens, a term for the units of data processed by an AI model. That compares to $0.075 on the cost-efficient version of OpenAI's flagship model and $0.014 on DeepSeek's cheap model, though DeepSeek states on its website that the pricing will increase fivefold on Feb. 8.

WPP Media cuts 2025 global advertising revenue growth forecast to 6% on trade concerns
June 9 (Reuters) - Global advertising revenue is expected to grow 6% this year, WPP Media said on Monday, lowering its earlier target of 7.7% due to uncertainty over U.S. trade policies. Advertisers are appearing to delay making new commitments to their marketing plans because of the shifting policies, according to a report by the media investment arm of ad group WPP (WPP.L), opens new tab. Digital ad spending by companies is a major driver of revenue for Alphabet-owned (GOOGL.O), opens new tab search giant Google and social media firms such as Meta Platforms (META.O), opens new tab, Pinterest (PINS.N), opens new tab, Reddit (RDDT.N), opens new tab and Snap (SNAP.N), opens new tab. Economic uncertainty is accelerating the adoption of AI tools in ad production and targeting, the WPP Media report said. Meta aims to allow brands to fully create and target ads with its AI tools by the end of 2026, the Wall Street Journal reported last week. Research firm Emarketer recently said companies that rely on traditional keyword-based search ads could lose revenue due to the growing popularity of AI-driven search ads. WPP Media now expects global ad revenue to reach $1.08 trillion in 2025, with 6.1% growth projected for 2026. Digital advertising is expected to account for 73.2% of the global revenue this year. In 2025, user-generated content will account for a greater share of ad revenue than professionally produced content, the report said. It forecast print advertising revenue will fall 3.1% to $45.5 billion this year, while search revenue is expected to grow 7.3%. WPP Media said brands are expected to prioritize flexible ad contracts, shift budgets toward media placements that reach consumers directly and focus on secure data strategies amid economic uncertainty. The U.S. remains the largest ad market and is expected to grow 5.6% to $404.7 billion, followed by China and the UK, according to the report.

High street retailer to issue refunds for USED tents that are returned this summer – and it's perfect for festivals
Do you have a retail story? We'd love to hear from you please email: money@ CAMP OUT High street retailer to issue refunds for USED tents that are returned this summer – and it's perfect for festivals A HIGH street retailer will issue a refund for any used tent it sells over the summer, in a boost for campers and festival goers. Decathlon has pledged to offer a full gift card refund for the return of every tent it sells to encourage people not to abandon them. 1 Decathlon will give a full refund to customers who return their tents this summer Credit: Google Customers must purchase a tent online or in store between June 9 and September 14 to qualify. Shoppers need to return it with proof of purchase before September 14, to receive the full purchase value back in the form of a Decathlon gift card. The retailer said this is regardless of how much they used the camping tool. Customers must also be a Decathlon member at the time of purchase, which is free to sign up for. The scheme started in 2023, but this year has been upgraded to include every Decathlon brand tent across both its Quechua and Simond ranges. A Quechua four man tent can cost £199 at the retailer. Tonnes of waste and tents are abandoned at festivals every year, which can put huge strain on the environment and those required to clean up the mess. A typical single-use tent contains as much plastic as 9,000 straws or 200 bottles. Decathlon UK sustainability leader Chris Allen said: 'By making it easy and rewarding to bring tents back, we're not only reducing waste across all camping activities, but also creating a vital supply chain for our Second Life programme, making quality outdoor gear accessible to even more people. 'This is about driving systemic change and changing camping culture for the better.' Waterpark to have Wave Festival this summer Broadcaster Vick Hope, who is supporting this year's campaign, added: 'Whether you're dancing at Glasto, on a hilltop, or roasting marshmallows with family, your tent deserves more than one weekend of glory. 'Decathlon's pledge is brilliant because it simplifies doing the right thing.' End-of-life tents from previous seasons have been repurposed and transformed into oversized flags bearing the message 'I'm not leaving my tent behind, you shouldn't either'. BECOMMING A DECATHLON MEMBER If you want to receive a voucher for returning a tent you will need to sign up for Decathlon's membership scheme. This is free to do and can be done online. Customers earn points when they spend in store, which can be then used as money off vouchers. Shoppers also get personalised offers which are tailored to their interests. It will then notify you when the human support rep is ready to speak with you. Google has a similar tool, called Hold For Me, for Android phone owners. Apple fans have been calling for the feature for months. "I'd love to basically have a "hold for me" feature, like the Google Pixels have had for a while now," one Apple user wrote on Reddit earlier this year. "Basically, the phone detects when you are on hold, and can mute the call and notify you when there's finally a person on the other line." But that's not all. At this year's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple also unveiled a new Call Screening feature. It aims to tackle unwanted calls, helping you gauge whether a phone call is important or another pesky telemarketer. The tool automatically answers calls from unknown numbers in the background - so you won't even realise it's happening. After the caller gives their name and reason for calling, the phone rings and offers you a transcription of what they said. This way, you can either pick up the phone or ignore it.
