Trump-Musk fight reveals fragility of relationship between Silicon Valley and White House

The falling out between President Trump and Elon Musk is just the latest reminder that the relationship between the new White House and the titans of technology has turned out to be complicated. The CEO of Tesla (TSLA) was among several big names from Silicon Valley awarded prime seats for the president's Jan. 20 Capitol inauguration, alongside Meta (META) CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Apple (AAPL) CEO Tim Cook, Amazon (AMZN) chair Jeff Bezos, and Google (GOOG) CEO Sundar Pichai. In the five months since, the president has either confronted all of their companies in court or applied pressure on those firms with his own words. Musk and Trump made their break official last week in a series of social media posts that featured insults and threats hurled by both men. The other executives and their companies had already been grappling with a tougher-than-expected stance on their industry. Zuckerberg, for example, was not able to convince Trump to stop an antitrust trial against Meta from going forward this spring. The president has since threatened Cook's Apple with 25% duties on overseas-made iPhones and criticized the iPhone maker's ramped-up production in India. Meanwhile, the company is defending against an antitrust lawsuit led by the Justice Department, filed during President Joe Biden's administration. Trump's Justice Department has also pushed ahead with a Biden-era recommendation for a judge to break up Pichai's Google empire. Trump even called Bezos to complain about Amazon after it was reported that the online retail giant was considering displaying the cost of tariffs next to prices on its site. Trump said Bezos "solved the problem very quickly.' Yet Amazon still faces a lawsuit from Trump's Federal Trade Commission that is due to start in February 2027. The FTC, which brought the case during Biden's term in office, told a judge in the spring that it needed to push the original October 2026 trial date due to Amazon's litigation delays. One of the biggest questions facing the tech world as Trump took office was how aggressive Trump's antitrust enforcers would be following four years of a Biden administration marked by legal fights with many of Silicon Valley's biggest names. By sustaining many of these cases and probes against Big Tech, Trump has parted ways with traditional Republican-style enforcement, legal experts say. "This isn't the Bush administration," Trump's FTC chair Andrew Ferguson told a group of American CEOs this spring in Washington, D.C., referring to one of the weakest US antitrust enforcement periods in modern history. Case Western Reserve University School of Law professor Anat Alon-Beck expects the Trump administration will continue to rein in Big Tech, especially given bipartisan support for the idea that Big Tech currently has too much power. There have been some positive developments for the tech firms too. Big Tech has gained the benefit of a relaxed regulatory environment, especially in the industry of artificial intelligence, making fundraising and complying with securities laws easier. In an executive order titled 'Removing Barriers to American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence,' the president rescinded Biden's executive order on AI safety and directed federal agencies to remove regulatory obstacles to US global AI dominance. "So they have to take what they can get from the current administration," Alon-Beck said. One tech giant that does have an early win from Trump is Microsoft. President Trump's antitrust cops ended what had become an uphill government effort to unwind Microsoft's (MSFT) $69 billion acquisition of video game maker Activision Blizzard that also began during the Biden administration. The decision came when the FTC voluntarily dropped a lawsuit that Biden's FTC boss, Lina Khan, first filed against the tie-up in December 2022. But Microsoft may not emerge unscathed, either. Bloomberg has reported that Trump officials at the FTC are also broadening a probe into Microsoft and its relationship with AI upstart OpenAI ( The probe was first launched by Khan, a key architect of a new movement seeking to expand the legal theories that can give rise to antitrust claims. In June of last year, multiple news organizations reported that the probe also involved a DOJ investigation into chipmaker Nvidia's (NVDA) competitive conduct. The probe was to address concerns over the company's dominance in the market for microprocessors that power AI. The Trump administration has not indicated it has dropped the investigation. And in April, Nvidia said in a regulatory filing that the president had kept in place Biden's export restrictions on the company's H20 AI chips to China. As for Musk, Trump this past weekend said he had no desire to repair the relationship, which he said was over. He warned there would be 'serious consequences' if Mr. Musk financed candidates to run against Republicans who voted in favor of the president's domestic policy bill. But on Monday, Trump made some conciliatory comments about Musk and Tesla. "I'd have no problem with it," Trump said at a White House event on Monday when asked if he would be willing to speak with Musk. "I'd imagine he wants to speak with me." He added, "I wish him well, very well actually." Wedbush technology analyst Dan Ives wrote in a note on Monday that he doesn't expect Trump and Musk to fully patch their soured relationship but would not be surprised if it improved in the months ahead. At the end of the day, Ives wrote, "Trump needs Musk to stay close to the Republican party and Musk needs Trump for many reasons," including a federal framework for autonomous vehicles. Natural Gas Boom to Heat Up in Texas

Texas is pumping natural gas out of the ground and exporting it at a record pace. It may only be the start of another energy boom for the Lone Star State because natural gas demand is growing both globally and at home. Texas produced 34.1 billion cu ft daily of natural gas in March, newly released figures from the Texas Oil and Gas Association showed this week. The association forecast that by May, this will have grown to 34.4 billion cu ft daily. More than half of the March total was exported, at 12.5 billion cu ft daily, with the rest being consumed domestically. More natural gas will need to be consumed domestically in the coming years, however, thanks to Big Tech's artificial intelligence ambitions. The topic is as hot as they come: AI data center operators are scrambling to find enough reliable electricity supply for their facilities. Wind and solar can't cut it, so the companies are going the nuclear path or, as it happens, the natural gas path. A senior Amazon executive admitted earlier this year the technology sector will continue needing hydrocarbon energy for a while yet. Meta essentially admitted that talk about buying electricity from wind and solar operators is cheap; reliably powering data centers requires baseload generation that gas and nuclear can generate—and nuclear takes ages to build. Despite the hype around small modular reactors, the world's nuclear energy currently comes from the large sort, and building a large-reactor nuclear facility takes a long time to construct. Gas-fired power plants, on the other hand, can be built rather quickly, which is going to drive natural gas demand further—and so will rising exports.A recent report from an outlet called the Center for Energy & Environmental Analysis found that the number of new natural gas pipelines being built in the United States was surging and that most of these—more than a 100—were export oriented, that is, geared towards feeding natgas to LNG plants. The number was 104 new pipelines, the CEEA said, which will bring online as much as 99 billion cu ft daily in transport capacity. With nine out of the ten biggest among these pipeline projects in Texas and Louisiana, most of the additional production will come from those two states. Some are already warning that natural gas prices are going to surge at home due to the booming exports and the insatiable thirst of data centers. There is only so much gas to go around, and with demand surging, prices will follow, the bullish argument goes. But there is a bearish argument as well. Natural gas reserves are still very much abundant in Texas—and more associated gas is coming out of the shale oil wells. Production of associated natural gas from the Permian, the Eagle Ford, and the Bakken oil wells has surged over the past decade, the EIA said earlier this year. In the Permian, the gas-to-oil ratio has risen steadily from 34% of total production in 2014 to 40% in 2024. The rise was a result of pressure within the reservoir declining over time, and as more oil is brought to the surface, which allows more natural gas to be released from the geologic formation. This is a prolonged process, and the current trend suggests it will continue just as demand for natural gas continues expanding. It might not be such good news for pure-play oil producers, but it's definitely good news for those in gas. The export outlook is just as bright as the outlook for domestic demand. The biggest export markets for Texas-made LNG are Europe and Asia. In fact, the United States as a whole is the biggest LNG supplier to Europe. This is not about to change soon and the volumes of these exports are unlikely to be going down in any consistent way anytime soon. Europe may refuse to face facts, but it still very much needs natural gas to power its economies—and it doesn't want Russian gas. The only other source of comparable volumes of gas is the United States. Texas is set to continue breaking records. By Irina Slav for More Top Reads From this article on

My Favorite Portable iPhone Charger Is 35% Off in All Colors

I take my phone with me wherever I go, and I'm not afraid to admit that I have come to rely on it for just about every aspect of my life -- from getting news, weather and navigation help to staying in close contact with friends, family and coworkers. That means, like many people, I live in constant fear that my iPhone's battery will die on me right when I need it most. That is, until I found the Anker 622 MagGo, which CNET ranked as the best magnetic power bank with an integrated stand and which I now take with me everywhere I go. Right now it's available with a 35% discount on Amazon. That drops the price to just $31 from the $48 list price, making this an excellent value for a major convenience. The charger comes in a variety of colors -- including white, dark gray, lavender, pale blue and pale green -- and it's pretty common to see one or two colors on sale at any given time. But the current discount applies to every option. Hey, did you know? CNET Deals texts are free, easy and save you money. Here's why I've stuck with this little charger for so long Have you seen people walk around with a loop of cable hanging from their pocket to their phone? I've been there and hooked that loop on too many chairs and table corners. Never again. The ring of magnets in the Anker 622 MagGo aligns with the MagSafe magnets in every iPhone since the iPhone 12, latching securely and charging without wires. (The notable exception is the iPhone 16E, which does not offer MagSafe but does charge wirelessly using Qi technology. The Anker 622 MagGo will charge the iPhone 16E but won't latch to it magnetically.) It's also compact -- a little backpack feeding power to the phone while you're holding it or have it stashed in a pocket, even a jeans pocket if your fit isn't too tight. Those features alone would have convinced me but the Anker 622 also includes a fold-out back flap that props up my iPhone and can also hold the phone in its wide orientation for StandBy mode. With a power adapter such as the Anker Nano Pro (not included) and a charging cable, I've taught long classes with the phone angled to help me keep track of the time without checking my watch. Essential Anker 622 MagGo specs Here's what you need to know. Battery capacity: 5,000 milliamp hours 5,000 milliamp hours Voltage: 1.55 volts 1.55 volts Output: 7.5-watt Magnetic (compatible with MagSafe-equipped devices, iPhone 12 and later) or 20-watt USB-C port. Can charge only one device at a time. 7.5-watt Magnetic (compatible with MagSafe-equipped devices, iPhone 12 and later) or 20-watt USB-C port. Can charge only one device at a time. Input: The same single USB-C is also how you recharge the device. The same single USB-C is also how you recharge the device. Size: 4.13-inch by 2.61 inches by 0.5 inch 4.13-inch by 2.61 inches by 0.5 inch Weight: 5 ounces 5 ounces Included: Magnetic battery, 60cm (23.6 inches) USB-C to USB-C cable Magnetic battery, 60cm (23.6 inches) USB-C to USB-C cable Warranty: 24 months Jeff Carlson/CNET MagSafe-compatible charging I've owned several battery chargers and each one has some sort of compromise. They're bulky. They require a cable. They charge wirelessly but don't include a magnet to keep the phone in place so it's hard to maintain that connection. There's always something. The Anker 622 is half an inch thick and snaps onto the back of my iPhone using the MagSafe-aligned magnets. I don't have to turn it on to start charging -- power flows as soon as the connection is made. Now, this isn't the highest-capacity (5,000 mAh) or fastest portable charger. That's fine. What I usually need is a way to eke out a few more hours of battery life on my iPhone. I can typically get a full top-off of my iPhone 15 Pro. The Anker 622 MagGo is smaller than an iPhone 15 Pro. Jeff Carlson/CNET Making a stand The other appealing feature of the Anker 622 MagGo for me is its built-in stand. Honestly, it doesn't look like it should work well: It's a fabric-covered set of plastic pieces that lie flush against the case, folds in two places and attaches to the back of the unit with a magnetic strip when extended. Yet I've had no problems with the stability of my iPhone 15 Pro or even the larger iPhone 15 Pro Max size. The stand on the Anker 622 MagGo slides down and adheres with a magnetic strip. Jeff Carlson/CNET This also lets me use standby mode by turning the iPhone to landscape orientation (the magnets are strong enough to hold the phone in place) when it's on a table or desk. Flip the iPhone horizontally to take advantage of StandBy mode while charging. Jeff Carlson/CNET Smart port placement matters The charger gets its juice from a single USB-C port, which is positioned on the edge of the case, not the bottom. That means you can replenish it while the stand is open -- many chargers' ports are stuck on the bottom. Having the USB-C port on the side keeps it accessible even when in its stand configuration. Jeff Carlson/CNET That USB-C port also acts as a charger for other devices when you plug in a cable, such as when your Apple Watch needs a boost. Charge other devices, such as an Apple Watch, from the Anker 622's USB-C port. Jeff Carlson/CNET How the Anker 622 MagGo compares to similar power banks Before getting the Anker 622 MagGo, I carried an Anker PowerCore III 10K Wireless, which doubles the battery capacity, includes a USB-A port and charges wirelessly but without magnets to hold the phone in place. That meant if I didn't use a cable, the phone and charger needed to be stable and level; too often I'd find the iPhone slid off its wireless perch and not charged. It's also larger and heavier. I still use it, but it's the power bank that goes into my carry-on suitcase as a backup charger. The Anker 622 MagGo is much smaller and lighter than my old reliable Anker PowerCore III 10K Wireless, which is now a solid backup. Jeff Carlson/CNET Since I've owned this Anker 622 MagGo, the company has released a few updated models. The $55 Anker 633 (currently on sale for $45) packs 10,000 mAh into a slightly thicker brick, includes a USB-A port in addition to USB-C and has a metal kickstand for resting the phone upright. You can also consider getting the chunkier Anker MagGo Power Bank that delivers 10,000 mAh and follows the same idea of compact magnetic charging and a convenient kickstand. Its main appeals are faster 15-watt magnetic charging and Qi2 compatibility, plus a small display on the side that reports the battery capacity and an estimate of the remaining battery in hours.
