KOTA KINABALU: The Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA) has announced tighter enforcement for this year's Kaamatan festival to ensure a more organised, family-friendly, and culturally respectful celebration. Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan, who chairs the organising committee, said there will be no tolerance for disruptive behaviours such as table dancing, excessive drinking, or loud music after 1am. Jeffrey, also KDCA deputy president, added that traditional houses must serve only authentic food and beverages, with operators risking a RM1,000 fine for breaching cultural or operating guidelines. In a move to encourage broader participation, KDCA has slashed stall rental fees to as low as RM2,500 compared to RM7,000 previously. The celebration, culminating on May 30 and 31 in Hongkod Koisaan, Penampang, will also feature an enhanced Buvazoi Tavantang Kaamatan (BTK) contest and international collaborations, with the Prime Minister and Head of State officiating the key ceremonies. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? HK star Lana Wong, 94, lives on RM2K monthly allowance as savings dip below RM5K
Hong Kong actress Lana Wong now lives in a small 160sq ft (14.8sq m) temporary housing unit. Photo: China Press Veteran Hong Kong actress Lana Wong once lived a life of luxury during her past relationship with the late lawyer Woo Pak-chuen when she was 18. Although they never married, she had six children with him and was said to be lavishly cared for, receiving a monthly allowance of HK$300,000 (RM162,467). The pair later broke up after a tumultous journey filled with trials and tribulations. Wong, 94, then went on to marry former racer Albert Poon in 1983. In a recent interview with Hong Kong's East Week magazine, Wong revealed that she's struggling financially, with her savings dwindling to less than HK$10,000 (RM5,415). 'Some unscrupulous people took advantage and tricked me into giving up the deed to my Sai Kung home. 'I lost all my belongings and ended up homeless... Luckily, a friend took me in, but I've just been living under someone else's roof for years,' she said. The actress added that she has since applied for legal aid and now survives solely on a monthly old age allowance of HK$4,195 (RM2,271). According to reports, Wong had previously announced plans to relocate to the United States with her husband in 2022. However, she decided to return to Hong Kong two years later and currently lives in a small 160sq ft (14.8sq m) temporary housing unit. 'At least I have a roof over my head and no longer need to live in someone else's home. That's comforting enough for someone my age… All I need is a bed and Wi-Fi for calls,' she said.

G-Dragon, Le Sserafim, Babymonster push on with overseas concerts amid Covid-19 surge in Asia
Babymonster performs during its world tour "Hello Monsters" in Singapore on May 17. - Photo: YG Entertainment SEOUL: Despite the recent surge in the number of Covid-19 cases across parts of Asia, K-pop stars, including G-Dragon, Le Sserafim and Babymonster, are pressing ahead with their overseas concerts. According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) on Monday (June 2), countries including China, Thailand and Singapore have recently reported a notable increase in Covid-19 cases. While the situation in Korea remains relatively stable, the agency warned that a summer resurgence is possible due to international travel and regional outbreaks. The NB.1.8.1 variant — now dominant in the affected countries — is known for its strong transmissibility and immune-evasive properties, although its severity and fatality rate remain relatively low. The KDCA is advising high-risk travelers to these countries to get vaccinated before departure. G-Dragon. - Photo: Galaxy Corporation G-Dragon of Big Bang is currently on his 'Ubermensch' world tour, performing across nine Asian cities including Taipei, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Hong Kong and Bangkok as well as Sydney and Melbourne in Australia. He is slated to perform in Macao for three concerts starting June 7. Asked whether shows in Southeast Asia might be canceled due to COVID-19 concerns, his agency Galaxy Corporation told The Korea Herald, 'We don't know at this point.' G-Dragon recently called off his "G-Dragon Media Exhibition: Ubermensch" in Shanghai, which was originally scheduled to run from May 30 to June 22. While the agency cited 'unforeseen circumstances beyond our control' as the reason for the cancellation, the uptick in COVID-19 cases in China is widely suspected as a contributing factor. Babymonster, also on an Asia tour, wrapped up its 'Hello Monsters' concerts in Singapore and Hong Kong in May and is preparing for its final Southeast Asian stop in Bangkok from June 7-8. YG Entertainment confirmed it has no plans to postpone or cancel the shows. 'We're monitoring the situation closely, but the outbreak is limited to certain regions. Everything is proceeding as planned,' a YG official told The Korea Herald on Wednesday. Le Sserafim is scheduled to perform in Taiwan and Hong Kong in July, followed by concerts in the Philippines, Thailand and Singapore in August as part of its 'Easy Crazy Hot' world tour. Source Music's parent company, Hybe, also confirmed that all shows will proceed as scheduled. JYP Entertainment's acts — Niziu, Nmixx and Xdinary Heroes — are also expected to hold small-scale performances in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, respectively, in the second half of the year, with no changes announced. An industry official noted that unless governments issue specific warnings or event restrictions, K-pop agencies are unlikely to take unilateral action regarding concert postponements. 'There aren't any government guidelines like we saw during the height of the pandemic, so it's hard for companies to take preemptive action on their own,' one agency source said. Another industry official echoed the sentiment: 'Without national-level advisories, it's difficult for agencies to make those decisions independently.' - The Korea Herald/ANN

Dutch museum rolls out 200-year-old condom
Published on: Wednesday, June 04, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 04, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: A rare 19th-century condom bearing an erotic print, possibly made from sheep intestine, is displayed at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. - Kelly Schenk / Rijksmuseum/AFP THE HAGUE: The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam on Tuesday placed on display a rare condom from around 1830, featuring an erotic print of a nun and three clergymen in provocative poses. The ancient contraceptive is probably made from a sheep's appendix and may be a souvenir from a brothel -- of which only two known copies exist, the museum said in a statement. "It shows that printmaking had many applications and offers insight into sexuality and prostitution in the 19th century," according to the museum. The museum said it would display the sheath as part of an exhibit on 19th century prostitution and sexuality. The print on the condom shows a nun lifting up her skirt and pointing her finger at three clergymen, who also have their genitals on full display. "It embodies both the lighter and darker sides of sexual health," said the museum. The Rijksmuseum noted the condom came from an era where sex was "fraught with fears of unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases -- especially syphilis." The print room at the museum holds some 750,000 prints and drawings. "This is the first example in the Rijksmuseum collection of a print on a condom," noted the statement. - AFP * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
